I was born in 1972. I remember having a sleepover at a friend’s house and she had a book that was genuinely scary. I’m pretty sure it was a picture book.
It’s about a kid that goes to bed and is afraid of the dark. The kid is sure a monster is coming and curls up in their blanket and faces the wall. Everything is told from the kids perspective and I remember it describing the sound of the footsteps on the floorboards and how the kid was certain the monster was leaning over the bed. I don’t remember why the monster leaves, but in the end the kid looks out the window and sees a tail dragging down the street.
This isn’t one of those wimpy books where the monster winds up being friendly. The book was really creepy.

If I remember correctly, the entire book takes place from the kid’s perspective, so that it could just all be in their imagination, until the end when you see the tail slinking down the street. You never see the monster at all.
