I live in canada but my dads lived in Russia before and he said he remembers watching a movie in the there and it was like a war movie I think and it was about a soldier or maybe 2 soldiers who are like lost somewhere and trying traverse some tough terrain and get out and they go thru many places or something like that and it’s about them getting though that I think I’m not sure but that’s all the details I could get out of my dad I can ask him more later so maybe the traversing is not the main plot of the movie and only part of it but does anyone have any idea to what it is . The movie was probably in Russian and my dad did not know Russian when he watched it

First thing I thought of was the film The Cuckoo, but that didn’t come out until 2002.
It’s not a war movie (though there are military guards), but when it comes to Russian films about traversing a difficult environment Stalker is what springs to mind.
Could it be Behind Enemy Lines with Owen Wilson? Was 2001 though
