TX, APS was recently called on my grandma. I am her primary care taker, she has a nurse, accountants and lawyer on call. What can they realistically do?

I’ve been taking care of my grandma who has Dementia/Alzheimer’s, she lives not even 2 minutes walking and is bed ridden. She has a nurse that takes care of her, and gets whatever she wants for food as she is in her later stages of life. Recently, APS was called on my grandma, by who I believe was a close family member, but when they showed up they stayed a very short time and basically said that she does not seem to be neglected or abused, but will still need to investigate her finances to make sure she’s not being exploited. The thing is, she has an accountant that controls all her financials. What can realistically happen? I am her only relative willing to take care of her in this stage of life and have been doing so for a few years now.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Did you meet with the APS investigators personally or did they come and go in your absence ? Did they offer you any referrals to services or assistance ?

Inform her accountant about this visit. They will comply with the APS investigation.

    >a lawyer on call

If that means that she has done quality end-of-life and estate planning, that’s fantastic. Do you know if you or someone else have medical or financial powers of attorney, or even guardianship ?

    >have been doing so for a few years now

Do you get paid, or receive a benefit like housing, in exchange ?

This would be a very good opportunity to review with her accountant how you pay for and keep accounting records for expenses on her behalf. A lot of people informally just use their family member’s credit or debit cards to buy them food or medicine or household supplies, and that can get tricky when you genuinely use the wrong card at the gas station, or succumb to the temptation to have Grandma’s card pay for a round of drinks.

From what you’ve said they will probably finish up the investigation and close the case. If they made commentary about financial exploitation then someone reported that someone is financially taking advantage of your grandma for personal monetary gain.

Maybe someone trying to insinuate you are stealing from grandma.
