Of course we are. God forbid my country not stick its nose in everyone’s business every millisecond.

  2. [deleted] Avatar

They are? That’s almost as crazy the UK police saying they’d extradite Americans for shit posting on twitter

  3. Ok-Fishermann Avatar

Can you link the article for this? Haven’t seen this anywhere

  4. HamPlanet-o1-preview Avatar

I have no hope for the anglo.

I think they just personally despise free speech, so left to their own devices they’ll just do it again.

  5. Wooden-Glove-2384 Avatar

I think the UK should tell the Trump admin to get fucked.

  6. Worldly_Table_5092 Avatar

Great, since I don’t have a license for spicy tweets.

I’m in the US and this country has an inherent difficulty minding its own business. That said, criminalizing speech is a form of control. I am openly gay and know what hate speech is all about. However, I WANT homophobes to identify themselves. Letting them talk and make a fool of themselves is the easiest way. Once “hate speech” is banned, any other speech that scares someone can be banned as well. The people who are offended by N words and F words better think twice before YOU get banned.

  8. IndividualSkill3432 Avatar

Uk “hate speech” laws are relatively small paragraphs on decades old public order laws that basically say things like

    >(1)A person who uses threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour, or displays any written material which is threatening, abusive or insulting, is guilty of an offence if—

    >(a)he intends thereby to stir up racial hatred, or

    >(b)having regard to all the circumstances racial hatred is likely to be stirred up thereby.

    https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1986/64/part/III

Free speech is built into the law via both custom and the European Human Rights Act. Its like 40 years old. The reason its been in the news has been some police forces have gone over the top in policing online social media comments when bigger crimes are not getting the attention.

UK can say they will repeal them, sign the deal, then simply have the same laws in a different format. They are broadly covered by offensives against the person that has existed for hundreds of years where you cannot just harass someone, this constitutes “breach of the peace” so these are extensions of breach of the peace.

(Scotland has its own laws and to be frank, muppets drafting them. They had to repeal one lot back in 2012 over idiotic breadth of the law related to football. So any comment “but Scotland” yeah the SNP are morons at writing laws and building ferries.)

  9. Chopper3 Avatar

    I think it’s despicable

  10. TinyTC1992 Avatar

    It’s incredibly hypocritical.

  11. Swimming-Thing-9873 Avatar

I’m sorry….we’re trying to tell the UK to do what? For fuck sakes we are the drunk Aunt Karen that nobody invites to birthday parties. Is this about the American guy who told a person to “speak english” because they spoke with an accent? That is absolutely hate speech.

  12. likethatwhenigothere Avatar

The general feeling I have is ‘can you just fuck off’. Fine, you want to ruin your own country. Stop trying to force your garbage ideas and plans on to other countries. You’re like “want a trade deal? Lower your food standards and accept our chemical animals. Want a trade deal? Change your hate speech laws to what we want.” Also, we’re going to start pumping money into anti-abortion groups in your country because we don’t like your stance on that either. Seriously, just fuck off and focus on your country.

  13. _say_grace_ Avatar

    They can absolutely fuck off

  14. JohnSmiththeGamer Avatar

Unsure if it’d succeed, tbh we’re more focused on the “the equalities act protections for trans people only make sense if we don’t let trans people be trans.” ruling, curteousy of a certain famous transphobe.

What do they achieve by doing so? Chaos?

  18. Bubba-1975 Avatar

In the US I can say ” Trump sucks, he’s a moron, a fool, an idiot, completely a dumbass” and be free to do it anytime and anywhere in the US.

In the UK if I say that about their Prime Minister or King Charles I would be in jail.

    Something to think about.

  19. throwrapseudo Avatar

As a UK citizen Fuck all will come of it.

Trumps a toddler with a short attention span, has he brought the cost of groceries down? Has he annexed Canada? Greenland? Gaza?

China owns most of his countries debt and they are playing hard ball with him, the USA is heading to a recession (or a depression). He needs to focus on his own problems rather than meddling in yet another country. He needs to distract his base from how bad he is fucking up and this is the latest distraction

  20. Difficult_Waltz_6665 Avatar

I suspected they would try something like this. If this is the tactics they are using I’d rather we simply walked away from any trade negotiations and concentrated on building alliances with other nations. We already have pressure groups from the US trying to influence so I think any rolling over to accommodate them would set us on a dangerous path.

  21. Defiant_Practice5260 Avatar

We’ll just say sure, if you give your workers paid holiday leave, adequate sick pay and maternity leave.

Fun fact: the vast majority of us in the UK have a 4 day weekend.

  22. made-an-excuse Avatar

We have a socialist government in power now and we are all happy to go to jail for saying hurty words on X

  23. tarkuspig Avatar

I don’t want any foreign government influencing my country but I also think hate speech laws have gone too far

  24. InfiniteBaker6972 Avatar

Any government knows that to bow down to this kind of thing would be an absolute disaster. They’d become unelectable over night. Sure there’s always gonna be voters who agree with anti-trans, anti-DEI sentiment but it’s a slippery slope. Besides, if we become the US’s bitch it will harm our chances to side with Europe & Australasia when the Chinese, Japanese & Indians decide to cut the US off and form a new trade mega power.

  25. samasters88 Avatar

What the fuck are we even doing here yall, damn.

    Fuckem. Dual citizen, Brit/Canadian.

Fuckem sideways with a fucking cactus. Fuck their neofash ideology and playground bullying.  Fuck Mango Mussolini and his groveling sycophants. Fuck their desire to extort, steal and impose, then make their victims say “Thank you sir, can I please have some more.” Fuck their late entry, playing both sides “we won the war-ism”. Fuckem all.

Sorry. That was more the Canadian side.

    We’re not amused.  /Brit

Remember how two months ago, Vance tried to tell you islanders that “free speech is endangered” and all that? Here you have it. Free speech endangered by an orange nonce.

  29. Substantial_Steak723 Avatar

America can get fucked whilst it fucks itself ..a Maga spitroast if you will.

  30. thePantherT Avatar

It is sad that Europe has turned against freedom of expression that doesnt directly violate others rights such as threats or calls for violence which is where the American constitution rightly draws the line. Hate speech laws can and will always be weaponized because they target “offensive speech.” Real progress is made in society and by confronting bigotry not by pushing it underground where it thrives and reemerges stronger then ever. All the progress weve made is because of freedom. Its no wonder that the more restrictive European expression laws have become, the further right people go. Its a dangerous trend caused by pure simple oppression. Offending others with speech does not violate there rights. Silencing people for offensive expression does violate their rights.

  31. Norn-Iron Avatar

The hypocrisy of a country whose foreign students live in fear of being deported because they say something Trump doesn’t like trying to dictate laws around speech of other countries is sad.

Our laws can be weird and overreaching but overall it doesn’t protect people from the consequences of their words.

  32. jado5150 Avatar

Didn’t they just arrest a French journalist as they entered the country because of their political leaning and isn’t he also threatening to pull the broadcasting licences of TV and radio stations for essentially bad press. It seems he needs to sit down and shut up.

  33. OldLondon Avatar

Here’s some hate speech – fuck off you bunch of cunts

  34. Northman061 Avatar

At least in the US they have a constitution that people died for to fight and enshrine in law the right to free speech……we get a different group in every four years deciding on what this speech or words this time they will try to criminalise.

  35. roddz Avatar

Honestly fuck hate speech laws. I want to see them gone, not because I want to drop n bombs with impunity but because I hate the concept of jail time/fines for spicy tweets. I just wish any talk of repealing the legislation came from a UK party, not the orangutan trying to strong-arm us.

  36. Significant_Glove274 Avatar

I think we should tell them to fuck off and we’ll check in again in about 4 years, see if the adults are back.

Any agreement with this lot isn’t worth the paper it’s written on.

  37. monkfishjoe Avatar

I say fuck Trump and fuck his administration. If Starmer caves to this, then fuck him too.

  38. tomrichards8464 Avatar

I dislike our hate speech laws and in general would prefer to move to a legal position on speech closer to the US (our libel laws are also insane).

However, I have no time for foreign governments butting in on a fundamentally internal matter. We have a perfectly appropriate democratic process for deciding this stuff, even if I don’t like its current outcomes.

  39. johnnybones23 Avatar

    imagine being anti-free speech.

  40. ditmoli Avatar

    Let me put this diplomatically.

Fuck that fat orange cunt and every one of his heinous supporters.

  41. TheNinthFlower Avatar

We have freedom of speech. But as we’re adults we understand that freedom is tempered by responsibility, not to cause harm to others.

    He can go do one.

  42. Round_Caregiver2380 Avatar

I think they’ll be too busy trying to save the US from collapse after poking China. China planned ahead decades ago and ensured the Western world and especially the US was completely reliant on them.

Pretty much everything Americans use requires Chinese chemicals or materials.

I doubt they could actually go to war with China because they’re so reliant on China, the raw materials for their weapons explosives, bullet propellant etc probably come from China.

I know nearly all fertiliser in the US comes from China so they could stop exports and stave the US into submission if they chose to do so.

The US lost to China 30 years before they decided to make it a fight.

Tell the ignorant yanks f*** off. The irony of the ignorant yanks lecturing anyone on hate speech is truly laughable.

  51. drumjolter01 Avatar

American here – please reciprocate by forcing us to support Ukraine and/or commit to NATO

  52. Rare-Satisfaction484 Avatar

I’ve always been against the hate speech laws.

No, people shouldn’t say hateful things, but it shouldn’t be a law, that’s not free speech.

With that said, fuck Trump, he has no sovereignty over the UK and I’d like to see what he would say if UK demanded the US end capital punishment for example.

As I’m against hate speech laws there should be no problem with me saying Fuck Off Cheeto man!

  53. bennymk Avatar

    I don’t think you’re missing much..

America is fast heading to fascism and it’s scary to see. Trump and his band of merry idiots are sending the country backwards so quickly.

  54. StationFar6396 Avatar

The US is infected. We need to stop the infection spreading over here.

I hope that Kier tells Trump and that little bitch Vance to go fuck themselves.

  55. Keelit579 Avatar

I just think it’s hilarious how stupid humans can be.

  56. ouch-n3wsho3s Avatar

    Fuck off mango mussolini!

  57. omnipotentmonkey Avatar

the sentiment about Trump here leans pretty hard toward negative, like 70%-30% if not harder., and the entire premise of Brexit was to have no arbitration of our governance from outside sources.

so any politican actively overriding our autonomy to acquiesce to a a foreign leader who happens to be fairly hated here would find their own popularity and electability suffering immensely. even Nigel Farage, leader of “Reform” and typical right-wing gobshite has been uncharacteristically quiet lately in his regurgitation of Trump’s talking points. so you’d assume there’s not a chance of this happening,

but so far Keir Starmer is making Neville Chamberlain look like a man entirely composed out of spinal columns so who’s to say, he might buckle.

  58. towelracks Avatar

If they could fuck off and just ruin their own country, that would be fantastic thanks.

  59. Gold_Age_3768 Avatar

I think the US leadership has demonstrated what a dictatorship looks like when it hid within a democracy. I am ashamed that we are letting this thug enter the UK. Maybe we should have built a wall!!!

  60. Electric999999 Avatar

I hope our government has the balls to tell that orange cunt to go fuck himself rather than let those fascist bastards talk how they want.

  61. ace5762 Avatar

As with everything about this U.S. administration, they can fuck off. Changing your laws about speech at an authoritarian’s demands? If Starmer thinks it’s in any way a good idea to start selling off pieces of our sovereignty for chlorinated chicken he’s more of an idiot than I thought.

  62. MolybdenumBlu Avatar

The world will be better off when the orange pedo dies.
