I need serious legal advice about a disturbing situation involving my family.
Recently, my parents caught my uncle (my mom’s brother) on a security camera having a conversation with a known felon — where he clearly asks the felon to kill my dad. He even suggests doing it by hitting him in the head with a hammer.
The video also shows my grandfather and another uncle present during the conversation. None of them objected or tried to stop it. In fact, it seems like they were aware of and possibly condoning what was being said. It’s incredibly alarming.
Here’s some background:
•There is an ongoing family feud involving a land dispute in Kansas between my mom and my grandfather.
•The uncle making the threat is a known addict, mentally unstable, and owns several firearms.
•The felon he was speaking with has a violent criminal history.
•The video clearly shows faces and audio — there’s no mistaking what’s being discussed.
•We’re worried for my dad’s safety, especially since this is more than just talk — it’s a direct solicitation of violence, caught on camera. •We’re unsure what to do next from a legal standpoint and how to protect our family.
Our questions:
•What should we do first — take the video to the police or consult an attorney?
•Can we file for a restraining order or protective order immediately, and on what grounds?
•Are there criminal charges that could apply here (like solicitation of murder or conspiracy)?
•Should we be concerned about retaliation if we report this?
•Does the fact that this is connected to a land dispute complicate anything?
•We fear since so many people will take my uncles side and could come up with a lie and testify my dad threatened them first.
Location: They’re located in Kansas and the land in question is in Kansas, but everyone permanent addresses are in Colorado if that makes any legal difference.
Any advice on how to move forward would be deeply appreciated. This situation feels like it could escalate quickly.
Thank you in advance.

protect your dad. I would call police ASAP.
It is imperative to call police first and hire a lawyer second
As a lawyer, but not your lawyer, you absolutely need to contact the police. Protective orders don’t stop bullets.
