Unpopular Opinion: I think people who talk to their pets like babies are low-key training them to ignore actual commands

r/

I get it pets are cute, and you love them like family. But if your entire interaction with your dog or cat sounds like, “Who’s a wittle baby muffin fluffball huhhh?” don’t be surprised when they don’t listen to “Sit” or “Stay” later.

I’ve seen people talk to their pets with 10-syllable nicknames, cooing nonsense constantly, and then wonder why their dog bolts into traffic or their cat claws the couch. It’s not bad to be affectionate but your pet isn’t a baby, and clarity matters when you’re training them.

Treats and cuddles are great. But if 99% of your communication is mush, your pet probably thinks your voice just means background noise.

Maybe. But it seems like pets also key in on tone of voice.

Talking to them like that without commands has nothing to do with how well they’re trained. If they’re trained, they’ll listen to commands regardless of how we talk to them

I dunno I baby talk my cat when I am not asking him to do something and use a more “normal” but still softer/higher pitch voice when I request a little trick from him. Because he prefers it over something deep.

It works fine for him. He still sits when I ask him too and gets to be babied.

I talk to my dog all the time, I call him names and ask him questions and he listens and responds to every little thing I say and every vet and place he’s been to since I got him at under 2 years old (11 now) says he’s the best behaved German Shepard they have ever seen.

Dogs have the ability to know a vocabulary of many words, more than just 5 or 6 command words.

i baby talk my cat but she’s also so well trained that it genuinely surprises people that visit. she knows recall, sit, sit pretty, stay, shake, lay down—— and listens better than most peoples’ dogs.

it isn’t the voice, it’s the consistency. consistency is extremely important when training ANY animal. my baby talk doesnt mean shit, because she was trained daily to know specific commands and she is only rewarded for expected behaviors.

she actually purrs when i baby talk her. i guess cuz she knows im doting on her and it makes her happy 😂

You can still talk to your dog in ‘cutesy’ tones while also have a high level of training.

That’s not true. Dogs can differentiate between casual speech and command speech. There’s no problem with it.

Please don’t ever get any pets, they would be bored silly

My cat perfectly understands what I don’t want him to do, baby talk or not. He just chooses not to care unless I stand up to actually do something about it, cat.exe here.

And by the way tone is not something you cannot change, a dog perfectly ears and understand the difference between an ordering voice and cute baby fluffy love affection voice…

No, telling your pets off doesn’t involve baby voice and nor do commands. Baby voice is for every moment theyre being good. I’ve never heard a person tell their dog to sit in a baby voice
