Use of cutesy words like « kiddos », « littles », « hubby » and « wifey » make the speaker seem immature or infantile

r/

I know it’s popular (thus why I’m posting here) but it’s the ultimate in cringe. There are words that exist with identical meanings (kid, wife, husband) why are we inventing new and often LONGER ones that mean the same thing? It’s not cute, it makes the user seem silly.

You are using “cringe” as a noun. You don’t get to speak on immature language use.

  3. ChunkzinTrunkz Avatar

I personally like to refer to my children as little “shitlings”

  4. Commercial_Roll_7297 Avatar

we give cute things cute names 😁

  5. mnfimo Avatar

Dude, I love calling my daughter kiddo, she loves it too, that’s all you need to know

  6. sidewisetraveler Avatar

    Okey dokey, Snow Queenie Bambeanie!

  7. Mr101722 Avatar

The only one out of this list that bothers me is “littles”. Something about it rubs me the wrong way, I just cannot stand it. Like nails on a chalkboard when I hear it.

  8. tlf555 Avatar

Language evolves and there will always be slang. I find the words ‘cringe” and “cringey” to be cringe worthy, but have found myself using them. Your post is kind of cringey

  9. Ok_Apricot2802 Avatar

    Man, u sound so unhappy

  10. Seattle_Aries Avatar

People who criticize these granular little things have way too much time on their hands

  11. amethystalien6 Avatar

Add doggo to your list and I’ll be unpopular with you.

  12. lemon-rind Avatar

“Littles” is like nails on a chalkboard to me. Just call them kids.

  13. Ineffable7980x Avatar

When I married my ex-wife, her little brother was only 12. He and I got along well, and I always called him “kiddo”. I stopped once he got to age 17 or 18. Long after the divorce, he and I stayed friends, and when he was an adult he told me he loved when I called him that as a kid.

  14. DilapidatedHam Avatar

Life’s not always serious, sometimes a little bit of silly is the goal

  15. Blasberry80 Avatar

To me, they don’t seem immature, but incredibly cringey

  16. RevealNatural7759 Avatar

It’s like when women call each other “mama”.
“Hey MAMAS my LITTLE has a fever of 105 and will only take the Tylenol with Red 40 in it what should I do mamas?!?”

  17. OcchiVerdi- Avatar

Hubby/wifey has never settled properly with me. I always get that weird ick feeling whenever anyone uses it.

  18. World_May_Wobble Avatar

It almost sounds like you think being silly were a bad thing, but that’d be silly.

  19. Fresh-Setting211 Avatar

    Today you discovered diminutives!

  20. Oplp25 Avatar

I agree, i would like to add on “doggo”, “pupper” and “lil guy”. They all annoy me quite a lot

  21. Gamerwookie Avatar

Counterpoint, you just seem to hate whimsy

  22. DiamondTough7671 Avatar

Being so concerned with appearing grown-up that it causes you to form such laughable judgements of others is the truest cringe. Don’t let the world totally snuff out your flame.

I know what this sub is but people need to lighten the fuck up a little. Everything feels like a thinly veiled attempt to position the speaker above others socially. There are other types of opinions.

  23. Astufcrustpizza Avatar

    Okay ms snow queen💅😂

  24. Samael13 Avatar

You’re bitching about people using “cutesy” words, but then you call it “cringe”? Glass houses, friendo.

The constant whining on here and pet peeves about people using diminutives/slang/pet names is just so baffling. Nobody is going to make you call your hypothetical children “kiddos,” but being a stick in the mud about other people using language just makes you seem like a judgy killjoy. Oh no, other people are being cute with each other! God forbid.

  25. Grelivan Avatar

I can understand not wanting to be called by a or any pet name as that is controlling your own narrative, but being invested in what other people do to the point you feel you need to shame them for not behaving as you wish is infantile.

    Have my upvote.

  26. RebaKitt3n Avatar

Not my circus, not my monkey.

  27. evophoenix Avatar

It’s supposed to be immature. Saying wifey feels less cold and professional than just wife. Sometimes, you don’t want to talk about your wife in a cold and professional way.

  28. orangutanDOTorg Avatar

Cummies is the worst one. You are a damn 45 year old, you don’t need to call it that

  29. Equal-Blacksmith6730 Avatar

If we cant be silly and have a bit of fun in life, what’s the point?

  30. Ladyspiritwolf Avatar

Rather be silly than serious all the time. Words are constantly being created daily for decades. I used to hate the word “welp” but it wasn’t going away since people had fun saying it, so i accepted it and got over it since it’s not a big deal. People have fun saying those words, and life is tough, so why not let others have fun saying words that bring them joy?

  31. crazycatlady331 Avatar

I feel this way about words like tummy, potty, and undies. Fine when you are or are talking to a toddler. Not for adults.

  32. The_Latverian Avatar

I think that, across a lot of categories, women today just do anything they can to give the impression they are whimsical and lightheared.

This is just one pf those categories.

  33. Old_Pumpkin_1660 Avatar

I hate it all so much

  34. NikRsmn Avatar

Man yall mofos need to accept that tone is a key part of communication. “Oh perfect so the kiddos can get some exercise too” sounds a lot more friendly than “That will allow the children to exhaust their energy reserves.”

“Me and the wife enjoyed our weekend” is a fucking business email. “Me and wifey fkd off to the lake this weekend” is far more friendly and keeps the conversation light. No one thinks your refusal to use pet words makes you seem more mature, it makes you come off stiff if it affects their view of you at all.

  35. DaveKillSock Avatar

“Preggers” makes me want to defenestrate myself.

  36. DListSaint Avatar

Breaking: childish words make people sound childish

  37. Austin_Chaos Avatar

For the same reason absolutely HATE the grey and beige borification of Nickelodeon headquarters and McDonald’s restaurants, I hope people keep using cutsie names and whatever else they want. What a boring, homogenized experience it would be.

  38. jetloflin Avatar

I find it very weird that you’re judging other peoples’ casual language while yourself using the term “cringe” in the modern slangy sense. Other people can’t use fun silly terms that they like but you can? Others are childish for those terms but your use of youth slang isn’t childish?

  39. spacefaceclosetomine Avatar

I don’t put “kiddo” in the same category as the others mentioned, it’s been used for 100 years plus. The others though, completely agree.

  40. truenoblesavage Avatar

“littles” grinds my fuckin gears every time I see it

  41. ptero_smack_dyl Avatar

I despise these words, same with vacay, doggo, pupper, etc. Talk like an adult if you are one

  42. EldritchDWX Avatar

    Ok “Snow Queen”

  43. Maniacal_Nut Avatar

Specifically Wifey and Hubby always bothered me even when I was a teen. It just sounds…. Odd lmao

  44. ddbbaarrtt Avatar

Kinda agree to be honest, as well as the way of seemingly infantilising things that can be sexual too – panties, booty, tiddies etc are all awful words

  45. Ryodran Avatar

Just a question then, is your username to avoid your name leaking where you don’t want it to or do you not have an issue with nicknames, but only cutesy talk?

  46. Rare_Independent_814 Avatar

I don’t mind pet names for kids, but hubby and wifey are cringe.

  47. Emotional_sea_9345 Avatar

I read the title as infertile isntead of infantile and still agreed

  48. Grujah Avatar

Hubby/wifey sounds like they have this weird fetish they are trying to involunterely bring you into. Hate it

  49. Skelligithon Avatar

I mean…. This isn’t even an unpopular opinion, it is in fact WHY they use those words. Nobody uses kiddos or hubby because they think it makes them sound professional?

Like to sound cutesy and infantile is the whole point, you don’t have to like it though

  50. Starman926 Avatar

I know poking fun at millennial-isms has become so common as to become its own kind of trite, but God all these phrases are just so unbearably 34-year-old coded

  51. Arkhangelzk Avatar

I agree, it’s hard to take seriously. I saw a post where someone repeatedly referred to their child as their “tiny human” and I was like….just say “child”

  52. Cryptic_254 Avatar

Nothing every thing needs to be taken seriously…

  53. Kittymeow123 Avatar

These all infuriate me. The kiddos. The littles.

  54. Antitheodicy Avatar

The other ones I kinda get, but calling a kid “kiddo” is the most normal thing I can imagine.

  55. No_Reindeer_3035 Avatar

I enjoy whimsy in my life. I’m unconcerned with being considered cringe. I find joy in my silly words. I also like pineapple on pizza. If I let people’s opinions shape my joy it would be chiseled down to nothing.

  56. Ok-Car-5115 Avatar

Language is more than bare information transfer. There are social functions to pet names and “cute” words. Imagine if your parents only ever spoke to you in a matter of face manner and were never playful or affectionate with how they spoke to you.

    (I upvoted because I disagree).

  57. Pleasant-Respect5248 Avatar

Better to be silly and immature for your words than be silly and immature because you’re judgmental

  58. FaerHazar Avatar

maybe i wanna sound a little silly!

  59. KittyKode_Alue Avatar

I personally don’t use any of THESE words, but Fiancé and I say a lot of similar and MAN. Maybe I WANT to be silly

  60. ModeratelyAverage6 Avatar

Ok. And what’s wrong with acting childish or not being serious all the fucking time? Isn’t life monotonous enough without having to add a constant seriousness with language all the fucking time? Loosen up a bit.

  61. Aunt_Anne Avatar

And sometimes that is my goal. I’m much more likely to be silly than serious (Though I can be. Time and place for everything). Life is more fun that way.

  62. MoonlessPaw Avatar

    and? who cares.
