USSS UD vs PA State Police

r/

Good evening,

I currently have to choose within the next few weeks which agency I want to work for. While nothing’s guaranteed, I was curious as to what some of you thought. I live in Pennsylvania as of now so PSP sounded really great. I’m 27 and my end goal by age 32-33 is to become a federal agent. I really wanted law enforcement experience to top it all off. Which would be more beneficial before the pursuit of my federal career? Thanks all.

If you want to be a federal agent, like an 1811 Special Agent type job, the USSS UD job is not that. It may give you preferential hiring later on but UD guys (and most USSS folks in general) are pretty miserable with their job. You should look at which job would be the best one to keep for 25-30 years if you had to because there’s no guarantee you’ll get an 1811 spot ever, and in that case I’d probably go PSP. You may find you really enjoy it and the idea of federal red tape is less appealing.

I would post in r/1811 and ask there.

UD pays very well but severely eats into your personal life and the future’s pretty iffy. Noem just sent an email the other day indicating that 0083s and 1811s are game for DOGE cuts, and that probationary employees (<2 1/2 years) are liable to be cut. State may be better at the moment because you’re not subject to the current admin’s whims, but I can’t imagine the money’s as good.

I’m on with PSP if you have questions.
