Vanilla is a basic flavor that honestly isn’t great as a stand alone flavor. I wouldn’t get it at an ice cream place unless it’s the last flavor. Vanilla, to me, is only good accompanying something else. Vanilla and a brownie is great. A warm skillet cookie with vanilla is amazing. On top of apple pie it is so good. It needs to be with another food.

Agree and disagree. Vanilla is indeed a wonderful accompaniment to many desserts, but good vanilla ice cream is a hell of a thing on its own too.
Are you over 30?
Once you hit 30, a good quality vanilla ice cream is almost as good as short, intense sex. It’s just… the fucking best.
I used to be a rocky road guy. But, now, vanilla is my ice cream bedrock.
Vanilla is a complex flavor. It just happens to meld well with a substantial amount of other flavors. That’s why it’s better than all the others.
Agree. With apple crisp, divine. Alone? Boring.
The most American thing I’ve heard since 5 mins ago
Oooh. I accidentally downvoted at first because this made me so mad.
You’re eating shitty ice cream.
Agreed. It’s well overrated.
HIGH QUALITY vanilla ice-cream is AMAZING on its own. I used to eat the cheap stuff as a kid and then I got my own money and vanilla is now a flavor I reach for!!!
What’s ironic is vanilla was originally considered a luxurious and decadent flavor in the west, because it was exotic. It was from the bean and fresher generally, and was an exciting addition to cakes and pastries. It’s since become a base ingredient to lots of baked goods, as well as ice cream, and is often added in a cheaper, more removed way. It’s current identity isn’t the full story. If you’ve ever had well made French vanilla ice cream, you’d understand.
Vanilla is more interesting than your opinion.
Sounds like you need to try desserts from somewhere other than Applebee’s. Wtf is a skillet cookie?
Which vanilla? There’s like 30 different varieties of vanilla😂
I completely disagree, it’s fantastic on its own. Sometimes ya just need a standalone after a long day at work.
Upvote because vanilla is my holy grail. It’s just so rich and flavourful and not to much but just the right amount.
Bro needs to give that
Vanillabean a lick.Plain vanilla is an expression for something being boring on its own, so yea, this isn’t an unpopular opinion in the least.
Fuck you and the horse you rode in on. Vanilla, real vanilla, is the best flavor there is. Somehow big food watered it down to where vanilla is associated with plain or boring.
Try real vanilla. Better than chocolate. Or any other flavor.
Well, if you had the vanilla ice cream that I make, you would definitely change your mind. It’s mind-blowing delicious!
But I do agree that it’s absolutely awesome with something else… like on a warm brownie or apple pie or
apple crisp 😋
Agreed. I am sure it tastes good on its own. But I want some nuts or sprinkles or something. Otherwise I just get a different flavor.
Vanilla ice cream is amazing.
You are cursed to grow weary of green wine and sick of crimson seas. For shame, for shame.
Vanilla custard, however, is a different beast. Good vanilla custard can make even the staunchest chocolate fan appreciate vanilla!
Oof. Take my upvote. I absolutely love vanilla ice cream. Especially the one that’s is like a yellowish color. Yum!
At one time, I agreed with you, OP. Then I tasted homemade vanilla ice cream made with vanilla beans. Holy frick. Cheap, chemical-laden vanilla ice cream really DOES belong in apple pie or a brownie. But the real deal is a taste sensation and should be served plain.
If you do find yourself in possession of plain vanilla ice cream, you can add cinnamon and honey to it (very good)
How about French vanilla?
That’s just so so wrong. I mean, I’m not gonna change your opinion, but I think you’ve purely had bad vanilla ice cream and that’s it, because I can’t possibly see how you’d have this take. Yeah, vanilla is good with toppings and such, but honestly it’s so good by itself. I’d argue it’s way better without toppings 99% of the time, especially if it’s high quality ice cream. It’s so flavorful, even the bad vanilla ice cream still tastes really good. I’d honestly choose a bad vanilla over most other flavors 9 times out of time.
Vanilla ice cream is a condiment.
Really high end vanilla ice cream is delightful, cheap vanilla ice cream is an abomination.
Now the blueberry, is one that, can’t work on its own. It has to have something with it, like the kiwi. It’s a, not a… a standal- standalone fruit…
It depends on the brand. There’s brands who have rich flavor on their own. Cheaper brands need toppings.
Have you ever had vanilla bean ice cream? Vanilla is a beautiful flavor, but low quality ice creams don’t use much of it, so cheap vanilla ice cream is often closer to just sweet cream. Try vanilla bean! Maybe Hagen Dazs or Brewers.
If you think vanilla ice cream tastes basic its because you can’t taste the vanilla. The problem is your tasting ability You need to take a break from sugar or get a covid test.
I became lactose intolerant after turning 40… I miss vanilla ice cream, really any ice cream, but specifically vanilla.
I don’t normally eat it plain. I did eat some tonight though with my pie. It’s great on brownies and stuff too.
sure its good with other stuff, but I love plain vanilla
Good vanilla bean ice cream is full of flavour. Cheap vanilla that tastes plain is just getting what you’re paying for.
Vanilla is flavoured with vanilla bean, if you can’t taste that, then you are eating cheap confectionery ice or your tastebuds are shot.
Alright stop, collaborate and listen. Vanilla ice is a brand new invention.
Real Vanilla is one of the rarest spices on Earth. Chocolate is basic and grown in massive quantities.
Chances are most people that have tasted most standard vanilla ice cream have never tasted real vanilla.
We talking vanilla bean, french vanilla, vanilla soft serve?
Vanilla is far from basic. It is one of the most flavorful and complex spices in the world. Like the above poster said, you’re just eating shitty ice cream.
Are you sure you’re eating ice cream and not “frozen dessert?” Because if you’re in the US most “ice cream” can’t even legally be called ice cream
That’s true. It’s kind of bland without some chocolate syrup
I’ve never commented in here, but – vanilla is the shit and it holds up on its own!!
The way I ran here to give my upvote. Just from the headline.
Vanilla ice cream is my go to. Chocolate chips, cookie dough, or bits of fruit can be a nice compliment but I’d still want plain vanilla most of the time.
The best icecream I’ve ever had is vanilla icecream I’ve made myself. Don’t get me wrong, it takes time. You have to freeze your icecream maker bucket for at least 12 hours, and you want to make your icecream base the night before you churn it, but Holy fuck, it is AMAZING, as long as it’s a custard based recipe. It’s sweet, creamy, and so damn smooth. I don’t make icecream very often as the recipe I make requires 5 egg yolks (I use the whites to make meringues) and 2 cups of heavy cream, but my husband is always excited when i do. Just tonight, I made some chocolate icecream for him to take to work tomorrow for someone’s birthday. It’s not half bad, but the vanilla is definitely better
Vanilla ice cream with vanilla beans in it is the best ice cream I’ve ever had
Try a true vanilla bean ice cream. If the vanilla youre referring to is just sweet milk, then there is some homework to do. If you’ve tried true vanilla bean and don’t like it, then to each their own. But I and many others in this sub suspect the former
You’re eating shitty artificially flavored vanilla ice cream
How is this unpopular? Vanilla ice cream is almost always served as an accompaniment to other things, and when it is served alone it usually comes with something like sprinkles or a hot chocolate or fudge sauce.
Vanilla is so mid. Even when paired with things- I’d rather have any other flavor, regardless of quality.
Cornish vanilla ice cream is freaking excellent, however.
Heh. I see you’ve never tried Blue Bell.
