This Roommate Demanded Half of a Seven Hundred Dollar Vet Bill Because His Poorly Trained Dog Ate an Entire Pot of Pasta

Living with a roommate is always a gamble. You might end up with a lifelong best friend, or you might find yourself trapped in a lease with someone who completely refuses to train their pet. Sharing a space with an animal can be wonderful, but when a pet owner expects everyone else in the house to baby proof their entire existence, the living situation quickly turns into a nightmare. One home cook recently found themselves in a ridiculous standoff over a stolen dinner and a massive veterinary bill.

The Original Poster has been sharing an apartment with a roommate named Evan for about a year. For the most part, they manage to get along just fine. The Original Poster actually enjoys cooking and handles most of the meal preparation in the house. They are also incredibly meticulous about labeling their food in the refrigerator because Evan has a dog named Milo. Milo is notorious for having a terrible habit of getting into any food left out in the open.

Knowing that a dog lives in the house means you have to be reasonably careful, but there is a limit to how much a roommate should have to alter their daily routine. One night, the Original Poster decided to get ahead on their weekly meal prep. They cooked a massive pot of chicken Alfredo, fully intending to portion it out for the upcoming week.

Fresh off the stove, the pasta was way too hot to immediately pack into plastic containers. The Original Poster left the heavy pot resting on the kitchen counter to cool down for about fifteen minutes while they stepped away to take a quick shower. It was a completely normal thing to do in a functioning adult household.

When the Original Poster walked back into the kitchen, a scene of absolute culinary devastation awaited them. The heavy pot had been knocked completely onto the floor. Milo the dog was standing right in the middle of the mess, happily licking up the remaining noodles and sauce. He had managed to consume a massive amount of the meal prep dinner in just fifteen minutes.

Panic immediately set in for both roommates. Any pet owner knows that creamy, garlicky, rich human food is incredibly dangerous for a dog to ingest. Evan rushed Milo straight to the emergency vet clinic to get his stomach pumped and ensure he was safe, while the Original Poster was left behind to scrub Alfredo sauce out of the kitchen floorboards.

Thankfully, Milo made a full recovery and was perfectly fine by the very next day. However, Evan returned home absolutely furious. The emergency vet visit cost roughly seven hundred dollars, and Evan firmly believed his roommate needed to open their wallet. He demanded the Original Poster pay at least half of the massive bill because it was technically their food that poisoned his dog.

The Original Poster immediately shut that demand down. They apologized that the dog got sick but firmly stated it was not their fault that Milo decided to go counter surfing. Evan had been warned multiple times to keep his dog away from the kitchen. Evan even openly admitted that his dog has a known history of jumping up and stealing food, yet he still failed to secure the animal while his roommate was cooking.

Evan tried to argue that his roommate was careless for leaving food unattended. The Original Poster fired back with a heavy dose of reality. Normal adults do not expect to have to guard their dinner like a treasure just because they share an apartment. It is entirely the pet owner’s job to manage their animal, not the roommate’s job to clear the kitchen counters every single time they boil pasta.

Evan has been giving the Original Poster the silent treatment ever since, dropping passive aggressive comments about people refusing to take responsibility for their actions. The Original Poster feels a tiny bit guilty because they care about the dog, but they are holding their ground. The internet unanimously agreed that the dog owner is completely delusional. If you own a pet with a stealing problem, you pay the theft tax when they inevitably eat something they should not.
