Video Games Based On Shows/Series Suck.

Okay so maybe I shouldn’t mention this because like maybe it’s a hot take but i feel we as a community should stop trying to make video games based off our favourite shows unless it is an official kind of thing.

How do I explain this without getting wiped off the face of this earth? Well, first of all, most games like this don’t even get finished! Gather gather up a team of basically 6 people and really try to make a whole entire game with no funding, and if they do fund then it probably won’t even go anywhere because 98% of the time, the game won’t even be finished. Getting many people’s hopes up just to abandon the project is kind of depressing.

If the game IS finished, then I think that’s even worse. When I scroll around and see projects which are making games off their favourite shows, series, ect. Not a single smidge of credit is given to the original, only mentioned as a “fan game”. If the game released, then the founders would be the only one making money, and the original creator(s) of the show wouldnt get an ounce of credit OR payment for taking their idea and just putting it into video game form.

Of course, this is okay if you ask the original creator to make this an official game for them and they say yes. Also if it is only a little bit inspired from the original content.

n conclusion, video games based on shows and series are an absolute train-wreck which never credit the original, and take funding and money from the original creators, especially if the game goes mainstream. If you’re going to make a game heavily based off of something, PLEAASE get permission, and if for some reason you can’t do that, PUT CREDIT WHERE CREDIT IS DUE AND GIVE AT LEAST SOME OF THE PROFIT FROM THE GAME TO THE ORIGINAL CREATORS.

they COULD be good, but most of the time, they are made just to serve as a cash grab. Some shows/series could lend themselves really well to a game, like most anime, but we never get an actually decent game from them however

The title makes it seem like its based off license titles, but then it acts like its about fan games, and then in the end it talks about making a profit? I’m pretty certain if you make a game based off a TV show/series and you’re selling it, it would be considered copyright infringement.

Can you provide examples of this?

Are you salty about something in particular?

I remember the Tron and Star Wars arcades games being absolutely legendary, I believe Tron actually made more money than the film and Star Wars still makes the short list of all-time great arcade video games

So there are definitely exceptions and the exceptions started early

But yeah we’ve seen more bad ones than good though that’s true for all genres

These thignsd are cash grabs and it’s known that this sort of thing sucks. It’s not an unpopular opinion.

That said. Game to TV is making a good turnaround and there’s been a bunch of shows that have done well.

    • Last Of Us
    • Mario Movie
    • Sonic
    • Fallout
    • (Not so recent) the Resident Evil Franchise
    • Detective Pikachu
    • Arcane
    • Gran Turismo was surprisingly good
    • New (and Old) Mortal Kombat
    • Angry Birds wasn’t half bad
    • Uncharted was fun
    • Twisted Metal

Not that everything old was crap, but it usually was. I’d say today it’s more than likely to be at least OK. I think they’re probably still cash grab (but then that’s what they are, movies aren’t being made to lose money) but when it’s so purely a cash grab I think they’ve realised that putting effort in may result in a franchise and more money. So it’s a win in a way.
