W1 Professor Interview Germany

r/

Hi all,

I just had an interview for a w1 junior professor job in Germany, and I am just really unsure of how to gauge if I went well or not, and what is appropriate to ask of the chair.

There was a candidate scheduled right after me and I was rushed from my teaching demonstration to the discussion with the students, so only got to have a very brief conversation with the chair of the search committee after, where he said that they would be in touch and for me to email him with questions. My interview itself was very conversational, and they were all typing a lot when I was talking.

I would like to email the chair and ask if he could be more precise about the timeline, since there are grant deadlines next month, but I am not sure if this is appropriate to ask, or if I should bother with a follow up email. It was extremely different from interviews in North America and other places in Europe, where I have been given a clear outline of the timeline and next steps. This has been the case for jobs I secured and did not.

Is anyone able to give any insight at all into this?
