Waiting in a long queue can actually be relaxing

r/

Everyone seems to hate standing in long lines, but honestly, I find it kind of calming. It’s one of the few times where you’re forced to slow down, do nothing, and just exist for a bit. No one expects you to be productive or multitask, you’re literally just waiting.

Sometimes I use it as a break from everything else going on. I’ll people-watch, zone out, or just scroll on my phone guilt-free because, hey, I can’t go anywhere anyway. It’s almost like built-in downtime that life gives you.

Sure, if you’re in a rush it’s annoying, but when you’re not, a long queue is basically free time to breathe.

I don’t mind if there’s stuff to look at and the overall vibe is relaxed. But I’ll personally never find peace in a DMV line or something.

  3. Dazz316 Avatar

I don’t mind waiting at an airport where I can sit and chill. But being tied to the spot in a queue?

  4. Princess-Donutt Avatar

As long as it’s one line.

The anxiety I get when there’s multiple lines and mine’s not moving is something my immature idiot competitive brain cannot abide.

Worse if I can change lines, only to have my adopted line not move and my old line goes.

Oh, and it’s 100 times worse when there is one line, but people are cutting in from the sides (Costco).

This has got to be one of the most pure and genuinely unpopular opinions I’ve ever read here. Congratulations; take my upvote!

  6. Pale_Slide_3463 Avatar

It’s fine till people start talking to you lol

  7. Fickle-Fart-783 Avatar

I mean, it can be, but that’s entirely dependent on so many factors (is my line moving? Is anyone trying to cut? Do I need to poop?) that the default mood is to be actively monitoring the scenario which in itself is default unrelaxing.

I will say doing menial things in otherwise passive environments is Zen inducing.

  8. NoahtheRed Avatar

I get it, but it’s the forced nature of it that I don’t like. More often than not, a line or queue isn’t exactly in a calm, relaxing place or involving a calm and relaxing task.

  9. Reoclassic Avatar

You can relax on the bench outside of the queue without people breathing down your neck. I like this post, but I feel like you’re chronically stressed OP and don’t get many breaks if this is relaxing to you xD

Agreed. I kind of feel the same way about traffic jams too. If I’m not in a particular rush to get where I’m going then I can just vibe in the car for a bit, listen to music, chat with whoever else is there… it’s a nice time to chill tbh

  11. Tinywife23 Avatar

If i have my husband with me, I agree. Lines and traffic are so much better and even relaxing when you have someone fun with you.

I have always secretly enjoyed it

This might be its own unpopular opinion but; there is absolutely nothing worth waiting in a queue, of any length, for. So from where I’m sitting, this is a wonderfully horrible opinion.

  15. Far_Butterfly9076 Avatar

I agree lol I try to just go to places I know will have a line when I’m not in a rush also. I hate when people are in a rush now especially working at a store with crazy lines. I just try to take in the people around me

My girlfriend uses the same logic to claim she likes free view (with ads) tv. She’s wrong, and you’re wrong — have an upvote

Ah, a truly cultured person. They do say that waiting often improves the flavour of the food you are going to eat.

I remember the first and last haunted house I ever went too, I had to wait in line for 4 hours, packed into a hot 5 lane waiting area with a hundered other people while ultra intense heavy metal was playing the entire time with no seating available.

By the time I was next in line, I had to dip out for a second because I was dehydrated as hell and felt like I was about to faint. Thankfully after I got some water they let me go in right away.

I’ll never forget it, because the lanes folded in and I kept ending up on the other side of this dad and his kids just about every hour, they all looked stoked at first but every time we got up to about the same spot relative to each other him and his just looked more and more deflated. The last time I passed them, they all looked exhausted and the dad looked a combination angry/tired as hell.

Going through the haunted house took like ten minutes and I did coke and got laid with a friend of mine afterwards because I felt like I absolutely wasted my time and wanted to salvage something of it even though it was like midnight.

I’m a pretty relaxed person so lines don’t really bother me either. I just read manwha while I’m waiting or listen to an audiobook. Heat doesn’t bother me too bad even direct sun as I’ve lived in places with no a/c and no electricity, I’m kind of used to it and I’m always pretty hydrated. I drink a lot of water, because it helps me avoid hunger. I’ve never understood the point of people getting huffy while they wait, you had to wait anyways, because salty about it doesn’t really fix it.

Sounds like a thought I would have on my way into work.

“Remember when I spent two hours queuing for that roller coaster and wasn’t worried about all this shit? That sounds sooo nice.”

  22. nappingondabeach Avatar

I love it so much. No expectations other than shuffling forward

  23. Suh-Niff Avatar

Big respect for how unpopular this is.

Now that I think about it, I am taking too much for granted the time I get before doing something anxious like going into someone’s office (delayed by long queue), giving me time to go througj my thoughts once more

  24. General_Scientist_41 Avatar

Totally agree. I’ve spent time working on my awareness so I’m not pulled into the whole hustle of everyday life. If you are able to put your anxiety to the side and really be in the moment and put down your need to hurry, waits can be a nice experience. Let your mind run wild

  25. Kingcrab295 Avatar

Depend on places and situation. I quite agree with you but imagine situation like these:

    – wait in a queue while the temperature is unbearable (too hot or too cold)

    – the queue is too long like hours++

    – too crowed and feel difficult to take a breath

    – your foot stand in a mud while waiting

I’ve been in these situations before and really make me hate queuing.

Same I mainly just play on my phone or zone out peacefully just thinking about life. If it gets to be more than 3 hours tho my patience gets tested. If my girlfriend has to wait for more than 10 minutes she starts to complain and gets frustrated by it meanwhile im perfectly happy to just zone out for hours at a time just enjoying the feeling of not having to do anything. I have a theory its connected to my severe loneliness I have had for nearly all of my life up until a year ago when I met the love of my life and started actually having one person at least that cared about me and was there with me 24/7. It was a huge adjustment when we moved in together but in the long one its been very good for me.

From now on, I will stand in line with this approach. Can’t wait!

    Pharmacy, here I come!

  28. clinicalia Avatar

This, yes. Unless I’m waiting for something serious like news about a family member or friend in the hospital, I really don’t mind waiting in waiting rooms and in lines. Everyone seems to go nuts over it and they say it’s so agonizing and annoying, but I genuinely don’t mind it one bit.

  29. Ok_Chipmunk_7066 Avatar

I dont mind queuing, but it boils my piss when the people managing the queue are incompetent.

Last time I was at JFK, the border agent at front would randomly move the front 20 of the queue and send them to the back of a sloghtly queue. You basically went from next in line to 40 minutes back. It was either staggering incompetence or they are doing it on purpose to provoke people.
