Wall mounting a TV isn’t worth it, no matter how clean it looks

r/

I used to rent, so I always used a TV stand. No mess, no stress. But when I finally bought my own place, I figured it was time to “do it right” and wall-mount the TV.

That lasted about two weeks.

The height felt off, I couldn’t adjust anything without unbolting the whole thing, and don’t even get me started on the cable situation. It looked good for about five minutes, then just became a pain.

Ended up going back and re-ordering the same fitueyes tv stand I had in my rental. I had left it behind for the next tenant because I thought I’d moved on from that phase. Turns out I hadn’t.

Sometimes the simple option is just… better.

Now I’m sitting here wondering why wall mounting became the “default” when it’s such a pain to do right and almost impossible to undo. Feels like we all just accepted it because it looks nice on Instagram. (even though the tv stand can looks nice too?)

The simple option is having someone who knows what they are doing mount it for you.

I assume you just went into mounting before actually accounting for eye line, and went with the cheapest mount that doesn’t adjust.

  3. bindermichi Avatar

So essentially, you mounted the TV at the wrong height. Got it.

    Rule of thumb:

    – The center of the TV should be at eye level when you’re sitting in front of it.

This sounds like an ad I couldn’t tell you the brand of any item I use much less a TV stand

Half of your argument is countered with “measure!!”

But the chord situation is definitely a strong argument. Nit just chord management but WHY DO THEY PUT THE HOLES WHERE ONLY A MOUSES HAND CAN REACH??????

Seriously the desogners really ficking hate the consumer by putting the chord holes all thw way at the center so you literally have to take the fucking tv DOWN in order to plug in the hdmi chirds. Fuck you engineers! Fuck you to hell.

  8. hotviolets Avatar

I rent and I mount. Never had a problem.

  9. Bo_Jim Avatar

I wouldn’t bolt a TV mount to the wall of a rental. That being said…

I also prefer the stands that come with the set. I don’t like boring big holes in the wall. However, my living room TV is currently wall mounted. After my wife arranged the living room the way she wanted it there was only one place in the room where a TV would be visible from every seat, and that was basically floating in mid air, partially blocking the passage into the dining area. We obviously couldn’t put any sort of cabinet there to stand the TV on. Mounting it on the wall to the side was the only practical option. We have to swing it out and turn it to face the seats in order to use it. We have to move it back against the wall and out of the way when not in use.

We’ve used the same wall mount for a couple of years now without any problems. We even replaced the TV once in that time. Cables are bundled going up the wall and tied to the mount frame. It ain’t pretty, but there aren’t any dangling cables hanging from the TV or mount. They’re all neatly out of the way.

The wall mount has to be bolted to studs. You can’t hang it on drywall. It’s not strong enough.

I agree with you, OP. I’ve mounted a million TVs, so it’s not about the task, for me. I agree with you that it seems like it’s just some assumed default, and it’s weird. It also puts the TV on too much of a figurative pedestal, ironically. I guess that this makes sense in a culture obsessed with consumption.

Oh brother do i have a story for you!!!! So I had just ordered a new monitor 32″ oled samsung g8osd in dec as a gift to myself as part of a whole new pc upgrade…I had also decided tl adopt a cute Lil baby kitten from the projects where I work at! So one day after sucessfully moving all my shit from one unit to the other and finally feeling like all my stuff was locked in….the cat decides to start acting up because hes not neutered yet and decided to run out and after chasing him down and him getting aggressive (typical cat behavior) I put him in my unit with the door to my pc open for literally maybe less than one minute and when I came back my monitor was on the ground with a big ass Crack down the middle (id literally just paid it off maybe a month before) so I cut his balls off and mount all my tvs and monitors and now he cant knock anything over accidently

  12. Dixielandblues Avatar

One thing is the size of your room and the available space. A wall mounted TV uses a lot less room than a TV on a floor stand.

That said, you mentioned you are renting, so avoiding damaging the property is important for you, I’d assume.

  13. butchbadger Avatar

1 buy a premium mount that tilts swivels extends etc.

2 Measure and plan accordingly before mounting

3 channel the wall for neat cable running, failing that you can get plastic covers that are visible but tidier than loose dangling cables atleast

  14. tehgimpage Avatar

there are also adjustable wall mounts where you can move the tv up or down or even swivel it a little bit

  15. vrnvorona Avatar

Aside from obvious lack of expertise and planning for ergonomics and non-adjustable mounting, cables is also suffers from same issue – for wall mounting if you need clean look you need to do sockets (aka route cables in the wall), otherwise it’s just ghetto.

  17. BluIdevil253 Avatar

You got the wrong wall mount. I’ve got one in-between my kitchen and dinning room that spins 360, can go up and down 3ft and also tilt 6 inches up or down. Get the right one

  18. Educational-Gap-3390 Avatar

Probably got the cheapest option for a wall mount.

  19. NullIsUndefined Avatar

Its worth it for child safety, to prevent crushing.

But you can also use a stand and strap it to the wall. Which is easier to install and adjust

  20. klc81 Avatar

“I mounted by TV wrong, so there’s no point in anyone doing it!”

  21. bongabe Avatar

I 100% agree. Unless you’re mounting it over a fireplace (which you shouldn’t do anyway) what else is anyone going to use the space beneath it for? Where do you put things like game consoles or a soundbar? It makes so much more sense to just have a TV stand like 99% of the time

  22. rsteele1981 Avatar

My TV looks great mounted. Perfect for reclining.

  23. JACCO2008 Avatar

I agree, but not because it’s difficult. Once you mount it (right), it becomes the center point of the room and whatever you do to rearrange your furniture in the future will be dictated by where the TV can be seen. On top of that if you mount it and really do it right with the cables behind the wall and everything, you’re stuck with that particular TV and device setup unless you want to dedicate the time/money to tearing out and repairing the wall each time you move, rearrange, or get a new TV.

  24. homiegeet Avatar

My wall mount has 2 levels on it. you drill 1 hole and screw it down loosely, then using that level, you figure out where the opposite side hole on the mount would be to make a pencil center mark drill a 2nd hole and screw it in.

As for height. If you have to tilt your head up or down to see your TV, you’re either too close to it or you mounted it at the wrong height. I personally measure from the top of my head to the ground while sitting on my couch. Then, take that measurement, mark the wall, and mount the bottom of my TV mount at that height.

I still have a TV stand, but now I have extra table space!

  25. GarThor_TMK Avatar

    I actually agree with you…

We got a TV a while ago, as a bonus on a rental contract… (the place had bought TV’s a couple years previously, and didn’t want to support them anymore, so they were giving them away to new tennants)…

Because they had wall-mounted them, none of the stands were available…

I’ve hauled that TV to 3 new places since then, wall mounting it everywhere… It’s a royal PITA to wall mount the thing. The wall mount droops. It’s hard to get behind it now. It doesn’t pivot well. Above all else, I can’t really re-arrange the space to better suit our needs.

I think I saw on amazon years later, a universal pedestal stand that you could mount a TV to… I should have just gotten that… -_-

  26. esby80 Avatar

Even if you rent, it’s no big deal. Cut a 3″ square and peel off the front paper/paint of the drywall. Take it to home depot and have them color match it. Two minutes with some spackle to fill in your square and the holes from the tv mount, and a quick touch up with paint = good as new when you move out.

  27. JannaNYCeast Avatar

My living room has been exponentially better since the TV got mounted. It’s better in every single way.

  28. FeelingBee1793 Avatar

Why do you suck so bad at mounting a tv? Also, don’t get a crap mount that can’t be adjusted. And manage your cables.

Guys dressing up isn’t worth it. I pieced together an outfit out of a dumpster but nothing fits and don’t even get me started on the smell. Fucking instagram, am I right?

  29. TheRepeatTautology Avatar

Wall mounting our TV was great for giving more surface space and keeping the TV little out of reach of our kids when they were younger. Personally I had no trouble doing it and don’t regret it at all.

Wall mounting isn’t always the best thing to do, but that doesn’t mean it’s never worth it.

  30. Pup111290 Avatar

I rent and wall mount, it’s such a better option than a stand. You keep more floor space, you have a huge amount of adjustment with the tilt and swivel arms, it looks better, and it keeps the tv safer from pets and kids.

  31. mmmmmarty Avatar

    Sounds like user error

  32. Comprehensive_Tour23 Avatar

I love having mine on the wall! But full disclosure, I didn’t do it myself I got someone skilled to do it.

  33. ButterPiglet Avatar

My wires and cables go through a hole in the wall behind my stand under my mounted TV that holds my consoles and stuff, the wires come back out of the wall behind the TV and you don’t see them

  34. RowFlySail Avatar

I, too, dislike the permanence of a wall-mounted TV. I’ve rearranged my living room a few times since moving in and wouldn’t have been able to just move the TV to center it on the new layout without patching, painting, drilling, and remounting.

  35. Reg_doge_dwight Avatar

Wall mounted so my kids wouldn’t push it off the stand. Worth the value of a TV 10 times over.

  41. ch0ey Avatar

You can’t adjust it without unbolting the whole thing and the cables look terrible? Buddy you just don’t know how to mount a tv

  42. AFthrowaway3000 Avatar

That’s precisely why I buy TV carts for cases like this.

  43. thebeardedman88 Avatar

You did not in fact, not do it right.

  44. Bearspoole Avatar

So you did a bad job of mounting your tv and decided that mounting isn’t worth it? What kind of mount did you buy, how did you measure it when you put it up? I used to mount TVs as a service sold with my work. Did hundreds of them and got really good at it. The mount you use is the biggest difference on whether or not it will be good. Most people try and find the cheapest 30 dollar mount they can find. If you want it to look good you need to get a decent mount, with some form of cable management involved.

I don’t think this is an unpopular opinion. I think it’s an uneducated one.

  45. CanIGetANumber2 Avatar

The main issue is that you just seem to have bought a shitty wall mount

  46. PollutionStunning679 Avatar

This is a “you” problem. First you would figure out the proper height and position before mounting. Second, you would ideally have a professional do a recessed area with a plug for your cables and power behind the TV so no wires are visible, and last, you would get a good mount that pulls out for easy access to the back and allows you to tilt the whole thing and swivel it. Also a nice floating console ties it all together. That’s doing it right. What you did was throw it together for as cheap as possible with no plan.

  47. Commercial_Square774 Avatar

Mantel mount. It does up and down and can be tilted as needed. It’s great.

  48. 246ngj Avatar

I prefer the stand method as wall mounted tvs have always felt/looked wrong to me. Especially above a fireplace. The fireplace is its own wall/section. Both in the same spot seems too cluttered

  49. Teaofthetime Avatar

It took me about 30 minutes to install and fit my bracket. Very easy process and I put some effort into making it a suitable height too. Sounds like you made it more of a chore than it had to be.

  50. FunkmanMarty Avatar

I’m not good enough with using tools therefore nobody should use them

  51. jrice138 Avatar

I also dislike wall mounted tvs but there’s nothing inherently wrong with it. It’s quite simple to do tho, there’s really not much to it.

  52. chloeismagic Avatar

I think wall mounted tvs normally look uglier with how they stick off the wall and they always have a cable dangling below them. It looks way cleaner to have it sitting on a tv table.

  53. Coogarfan Avatar

A lot of people in the room, need more space? Voila, right in the wall.

Not all of us are Michael freaking Scott, I guess.

  54. gitismatt Avatar

our house was new construction but it was already partially built when we bought it. one of the things we really liked was that it has these conduits built into the wall to run the tv cables through so they’d be hidden. we could finally wall mount our tv in a somewhat easy manner

8 years later we’re still using a stand. just cant be bothered to mount the damn thing

  55. Legal-Conclusion-0 Avatar

I love using a true dedicated stand. With a flat and thin foot platform, tube and flexible height with swivel.

Really a dedicated room thing, perfect to mount a center channel under, no wide furniture thing, hit the ideal distance from seating. Wall Mounting has me compromise seating or acoustics.

  56. PizzaBootyGuy Avatar

  60. Eureka05 Avatar

You measured wrong, or not at all, before mounting.

Basically you did it wrong and went back to using a stand. Nothing wrong with a stand, but slagging off wall mounts when it was user error is kinda lame.

  66. NeverSayNever2024 Avatar

I never understood the appeal of the wall mount.

TV should be viewed at eye level. I’ve seen some people place the TV up so high, you have to angle your head upwards.

Also I have a home theater setup. I need shelves for my AV receiver, Blu-Ray player, cable box, SCAD player, a center channel speaker. If I’m going to need shelves I might as well get an entertainment center and place my TV on that.

  67. molhotartaro Avatar

TV stand is not an option for people with cats like mine.

  68. ChristopherFromNEPA Avatar

Just kinda sounds like you’re new to mounting. Not that mounting is the issue.

  69. zeptillian Avatar

This critique of wall mounting seems like you are blaming the wall mount for the fact that you mounted it at the wrong height.

There are also many ways to deal with the cables. Maybe you made the wrong choice there too?

  70. Extension_Degree9807 Avatar

You either had no idea what you were doing and didn’t try to figure it out before hand or you knew what you were doing and bought cheap non adjustable mounts and didn’t measure right.

I have a 55 inch with a sound bar mounted. Pulls out, tilts up and down. Turns side to side. Really useful with kids.

  71. Kristovski86 Avatar

My wall mount is on its 3rd TV and hasn’t come off the wall ever. You sure you bolted it into studs?

  72. Maysock Avatar

    It’s not that hard.

You measure where you want it, I will often measure the placement of the bolts and then measure above and below to get the TV height and to the left and right to get the width, then I’ll visualize it while standing back. There are height and distance recommendations online as well for your tv and room size.

You cable manage in the wall with channels.

You buy a mount that moves in multiple directions, even if you don’t intend to use it daily like that, because it’s 100x easier to install and the cost difference is like $25 vs $35 dollars.

Double pro tip: run all the cables once in the channel. So if you have 4 HDMI ports, run 4 cables even if you only use two now. So much easier and HDMI are very cheap. This is also useful for doing it for your parents/grandparents, because then they won’t call you in 3 weeks asking to come over to help set up your sister’s kid’s PS5 in the living room.

  73. mousemarie94 Avatar

Just have a professional install and you’ll feel differently

  74. Greenpoint_Blank Avatar

Wall mounting isn’t worth it because 98% of the time it is mounted way too high.

  76. D70nova Avatar

The only issue with wall mount TVs is, inconvenient for people who like to completely change the feel of the living area by moving it all around once in a while. If you leave your space in the same configuration forever, staring at the tv in the same location, then eat bugs.

  77. jonnycanuck67 Avatar

You are apparently very bad at hanging tv’s. Any wall mount gives you the ability to move it up and down 10-12 inches. How would I use a stand over a fireplace?

  78. j_dubya4 Avatar

Sounds like a you problem my man. Don’t go cheap on mount. Learn how to mount it. Tape the wall to see where the tv should go. Voila

  79. Seniorjones2837 Avatar

You just have to make sure you screw the mount into the studs instead of just the sheet rock. Otherwise crash.

  84. Santiagoslegend Avatar

Sure, but if you can’t do something right AND don’t mind your place looking like a cheap rental, you can just say that.

Heck, just put contact paper on your countertops and paint over all the light switches; that’s easier and doesn’t require learning a new skill too!

Sounds like you have no idea how to wall mount a tv and dont have a conduit channel.

  97. Elegant-Analyst-7381 Avatar

This says more about you than about wall mounting a tv. I’m an old lady and I’ve mounted them on concrete and drywall, and it’s never been a fuss. And just like when you hang/install anything on a wall, photos or whatever, you should have someone hold it up and stand/sit at a distance to see if you like the placement before you install it.

  98. punk_rock_barbie Avatar

Sounds like you just bought a shitty tv mount tbh

  99. italjersguy Avatar

Done it a few times. Always looks great. I’m not a pro installer but it’s not even a little difficult to do well.

Hardest part is power because you can’t just run cable in the wall, so you may need an electrician to add a recessed plug. But after that it’s easy to run everything behind the wall and get a good mount that adjusts. Also do a little planning and research on tv viewing height before hanging it.

Doing something poorly and then saying it never turns out right just reveals your own incompetence.

  100. natedogjulian Avatar

  101. Poprhetor Avatar

  106. FlussoDiNoodle Avatar

Prep could have saved you time and money. Look up the most comfortable tv angle, realize that the perfect angle is slightly downward and you most likely don’t need a wall mount and if you still do, measure the damn thing before you mount it. Same with the wiring, Get a cable cover same color as the wall and measure/plan before you actually do anything.

  107. Putasonder Avatar

We had ours professionally mounted. They measured and leveled everything perfectly and ran the cables behind the wall. Worth every penny, no regrets.

My husband did the one in our basement. Perfectly level but height slightly too high, so I get where you’re coming from: height makes a difference.

  115. First-Junket124 Avatar

Yeah you’re just doing it wrong.

If height is an issue then what you should be doing is getting the couch where you want, get it at eye-level and then measure for the centre point of the TV there instead of just eyeballing it. Measure twice, cut once kinda thing.

Routing cables…. is very simple idk how it looks messy unless you’re lazy and make it dangle. You can either feed it through the wall (please be careful of wiring behind the wall) which looks the best but difficult to move. You can also use conduit on the wall and feed it through that and making sure to color match as best as possible to the wall which can be moved pretty quickly. Cheapest option is getting braided wrap that looks the worst but easy.
