Walmart claims I stole but wouldn’t tell me what

I have court in the morning… but I went to jail April 14th for my friend accidentally stealing hot pockets…

My friend picked me up from work, we went to Walmart and we got like maybe 40 dollars worth of groceries.

immediately after we were finished checking out at self checkout, a cop grabbed me and my friend by the arms and brought us into a side office? As soon as the cop grabbed us my friend said “oh the hot pockets!!!” And we were hand cuffed and sat down in this office. We asked if we could pay for the hot pockets. The cop said no. I said I didn’t steal anything, but the cop said since my friend did I’m going with her to jail, it’s like Walmarts policy he said. I gave them my receipts, I paid 38.50 then again another transaction of 14.24 to help pay for some of my friends stuff. My friend also had her receipt. The cops from Walmart can kinda tell we’re freaking out and crying and stuff. The cop says everything from here is totally up to Walmart. Absolutely every item we got was food and we didn’t even mean to steal the hot pockets… (they were under the basket)

Walmart guy who sits in the office with his computer shows us checking and our receipts to everything we bought…. Tells the cop to take us.
Never once was I even told what I “stole” and if I did somehow not scan anything… why didn’t they say what? Also, all the groceries we got that night we were still charged for and we didn’t get?

I’m poor and can’t get a lawyer the night before so should I just plead no contest?

NAL you should have been given information to get a court appointed lawyer. At the hearing say you haven’t gotten a court appointed lawyer, and ask to have another hearing in a month. Then get one!

A cop was just waiting to arrest you for stealing hot pockets? This is so fake.

NAL. Ask for court appointed attorney. They will try and threaten and scare you. Do not take any deal they set on the table. It does not matter what the deal is. Do not take it. Advise the courts you’re willing to fight it till the end so stop wasting both of your time. You could even ask for a speedy trial.
