Water entering basement in rental

r/

Location: Iowa

I started my lease in June, and the first heavy rainfall, we noticed water getting in the basement along the walls. We have 2 sump pumps as we are in a lower area near a small river. After the first time, my landlord adjusted the pumps float so they’re running sooner, also put industrial fans and dehumidifiers in the basement.

Next time it rained, more water, and he had a crew tear up the perimeter of the house and add dirt to help the runoff, hoping this would resolve the issue of course.

This time, he says “I’ve tried to resolve the issue by adding dirt to the entire perimeter and adjusting the sump pumps, I don’t know of another solution as everyone in town (how would he know?) is getting water in the basement, including me.)

He then offered us to be able to terminate our lease. Do we have anything we can do, or is it deal with it, or move out?
