We do not need to censor or blur out every “bad” or sensitive word in social media

r/

This is literally everywhere, here, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Twitter, you name it. Someone posts something, and they write it as fck, btch, slt etc. Like what is even the point of this? Everybody understands what word they are trying to use, so why blur out 1 letter as if that magically makes it a correct way to say swear words. But recently I’ve even started to see non-swear words getting blurred out or replaced with other symbols such as “304, d3@d, a$$, kll” or instead of saying “autim” its now “acoustic” or instead of “retaded” its now “restarted” etc. Like whats the actual point of this “censoring” or “blurring” for more so called sensitive words? Everyone still understands the original meaning of the intended word, so using a wildcard letter in the middle doesn’t change the words meaning anyways. Its ironic, that I can’t even post these uncesored words in this post, but as soon as I replace a letter with a star symbol, its somehow totally acceptable by everyone everywhere?

Please remember what subreddit you are in, this is unpopular opinion. We want civil and unpopular takes and discussion. Any uncivil and ToS violating comments will be removed and subject to a ban. Have a nice day!

It’s just corporate policy. If too many people on tiktok talk about… suicide and death and killings, then why would any advertiser ever want to be associated with that? “Hey look at us! We are Coca Cola and we advertise our drinks on an app that is obsessed with suicide and murders!” which uh… really isnt good PR. By adding a censor to the words, they have a level of deniability about it.

Algorithm are programmed to look for certain words. When they find a questionable word, it flags the comment. Which usually means the post doesn’t get published or it gets deleted. That is why it’s done, to avoid the algorithm censors and now AI censors.

It’s so the corporations don’t shadowban creators. This is well known. Do you live under a rock? 😅

It’s like Orwell’s 1984 newspeak but even more stupid because it’s basically down to being child-friendly and ad-friendly.

    We shouldn’t actually censor anything.

Every single one of my FB posts has profanity in it. Its a rule I have.

I think so the site don’t kill there comment
Because the algorithm doesn’t spot those words if they’re slightly different

This is done mostly to avoid algorithmic censors. You can get shadowbanned, regular-banned, or have your data scraped by the US federal government to put into a database that can be later used in combination with facial recognition and armed drones to commit targeted assassinations outside your house for saying “[redacted] the [redacted]”, if the ruling powers deem you a threat for something you said online.

Social credit points are invisible, but they exist on socmed nowadays. If you say “fuck” too much, Facebook will simply decide to not show any of your posts to friends and relatives in their feed anymore. If you say anything remotely similar to violence and don’t phrase your comment carefully, welcome to the void because the automoderator has taken down your comment before anyone could see it. If you want to simply *exist* in social media spaces, you have to cater to the whims of fucking automation.

We live in a nightmarish fucking dystopia. It isn’t by choice, and freedom of speech on the internet is compromised. It’s fucked up that we have to modify our behavior to avoid the ire of auto-moderators and fucking ROBOTS. Even Reddit is prone to this.

A good portion of websites you’ll still catch a ban if you use the entire word.

  11. Throwing_Old_People Avatar

Yes, it’s incredibly stupid. Everything is censored these days. there was no censoring back in the myspace days. Ppl were allowed to talk openly and honestly. FB actually censors and suspends ppl talking about mental health issues now. I’m the admin of a large fb group and have had to tell ppl they can’t talk about several topics bc zoomers will report them and get them banned from fb. It is hard to believe someone would be disturbed enough to try and bring someone down who was already struggling.

We shouldn’t- but sometimes have to if you don’t want Facebook deleting your comment 🙄

  13. Sonnycrocketto Avatar

Fuck you I won’t do as you tell me.

We should also stop banning people for their opinion on things. Even if they appear to be racist or bigoted or misogynistic, etc.

Just because someone’s views don’t align with yours doesn’t mean they are actually hateful or even wrong.

  15. Adaptation_window Avatar

Because advertisers don’t like it. Do you really think anybody on these platforms WANTS to censor their words? No but they are forced to, by corporations who want mass appeal advertising on their sites. I’m so sick of people acting like anyone is doing this by choice and it isn’t in response to the platforms censoring content.

  16. hermione87956 Avatar

For some of us it’s a habit from MMOs. many of them had chat filters you couldn’t remove so if you wrote the full word it would substitute ** or reject your chat altogether and you would have botched sentences. Some websites and platforms also filter to prevent bullying. It’s also shorthand in texting.

  17. AK_Pokemon Avatar

To avoid (automated) bans. Duh. Were you born yesterday?

  18. SourLimeSoda Avatar

I don’t understand what the point of the censor is. You know what was said so how is knowing what was said any different than actually seeing it

  19. Impossible_Towel_73 Avatar

I can’t believe this question is even being asked. (Like, you new to the internet?) Clearly we all aren’t having the same experiences online🤣🤣🤣🤣

  20. Gingersoulbox Avatar

This unalived themselves shit has to stop

  21. bowlingforzoot Avatar

Most people don’t censor words because they want to, but because they have to if they want to get past the censors built in to certain apps/websites. It’s the worst on TikTok, but Facebook/Instagram, and even Reddit, have gotten pretty bad about it. Don’t be upset with people that are just trying to get around filters, be upset with the companies using the filters in the first place.

  22. Late_City_8496 Avatar

Nooo I used to think it was smart or fun. A friend set me straight so I no longer use foul words. I’m happier but I don’t correct those who do.
    Not my problem.

  23. TheBrassDancer Avatar

No, we don’t from a moral sense.

It happens because the social media companies demonetise content creators, and even restrict their reach, for using a lot of those words which are otherwise innocuous when used in context. So blame them, not the creators.

  24. freshly-stabbed Avatar

Because you’re not the customer. You’re the product being sold to advertisers.

And if the website views you as a product not worth selling, you aren’t shown to them.

  25. Redshift2k5 Avatar

You do realize ppl make video content to make money? You get demonetized (or your content just not shown to viewers) if you use words the platform doesn’t like

  26. _KeyserSoeze Avatar

It’s about the algorithm. We’ve already had that several times and it’s not an unpopular opinion.

    >Like what is even the point of this?

Because most of the above corporations don’t want to be associated with foul language, and thus either hide, or completely remove posts with certain words.

If you don’t know this, you’ve either been living under a rock or completely ignoring the literal hundreds of times this has been explained on said apps; and on reddit.

    Tbf i don’t know what 304 means 🙁

  29. Goddamitdonut Avatar

Totally agree and this is popular especially with those of us older than tiktok

  30. dodozennn Avatar

I think it’s not because they want to censor it themselves, but because of monetization, or a “censor-bot”. That’s why people censor themselves on certain words, for their content to not be completely censored/shut down
