we have become so judgemental

r/

M19 here and I am sick and tired of people labeling someone as a “red” or “green” flag based on a one sided singular event. You don’t know the full story so stop coming to a conclusion so quickly. Judging someone (often an acquaintance or stranger) based on a one-sided story is imo quite immature and disrespectful. Obviously, this does not work on everyone as I am fully aware that there are people who are actually just plain disgusting. However, it seems to have gotten out of hand and now everyone judges a potential partner, a friend, a classmate, a teacher, literally anyone as a “red” or “green” flag based off a singular event.

Being in college I often hear that art and humanity degrees are “easy” whereas science degrees are “hard”. I know that objectively there are some truths to this but even as a science student, the hardest courses I’ve taken are humanity and art courses. No, it is not because I am dumb but because we highly underestimate their difficulties. Actually, I find humanity and art courses to be extremely overlooked because these are the courses that teach about our history, our cultures, societal dynamics, and social hierarchy among many other fascinating and important concepts. These are fundamental to productive societies! Judging these two fields has only made people in stem more arrogant and people in humanities more ashamed.

Social media has been feeding eco chambers and it seems like most users have no idea on how much this affects their perception of reality. What happened to fact-checking sources and listening to experts rather than making fast conclusions based on a 30 secs short a random guy posted with made up data? I’m not going to give a lot of detail on this as I’m sure I can go on with paragraphs. However, I’ve heard people around me many times label/judge minority groups based on something they randomly watched on TikTok or instagram when it is clearly a myth or not factual.

Am I mistaken or was this post entirely judgmental?

we should be judgemental. we should judge others for doing things wrong. especially if doing things wrong is incredibly basic.

if you, for example, piss on the toilet seat and refuse to clean it, you will be judged harshly for that.

“Become” is a strong word. Anyway…

Frankly, I mostly only use that language to describe a potential partner when it is most assuredly useful and in my best interest to be judgmental. Sorry not sorry.

Unfortunately the only thing you can do as a normal person is surrounding yourself with not judgmental people and using your words in way that doesn’t provoke emotional, polarized responses (for example changing “you’re always disrespecting me” to “I know you didn’t mean it but this made me feel disrespected”).

Honestly it’s hard for me to personally empathize with this post. Because duh… art and humanity are not black or white. There is a lot of grey area when it comes to how people behave and what we like.

Whereas much of science is pretty black and white. Giving someone 50 grams of fentanyl is going to kill them, just like most people can withstand 2-5 gs and be unaffected. There are tons of proven facts about the human body, but nothing is more than theory for our brains.

The science/art back and forth has existed forever.

At least if we’re judging people for an event we’ve at least moving toward to judging them for their actions not their skin colour or other things outside their control.

People are going to judge and evaluate other people it’s human nature, it may as well be for something sensible like their actions.

Red flag green flag is often used in the context of calling out abusive behaviours which yes we should judge and yes we should call out.

However if people are extrapolating data from specific to general they are fairly likely to draw poor conclusions.

I have been flagged as being far left, far right, far-far… by so many times by ppl who just don’t want to make a compromise on things they see as absolutes in order to have solidarity with as many ppl as possible.

This is without a doubt the problem of this generation. Polarization; black/white thinking; echo chambers; superficial social media posts; a lack of critical thinking; lack of nuance; style over substance, etc.

Whether it’s politics, dating, or culture. Everything is reduced to Boolean 1s and 0s. We need to fine a new language to describe the world.

A world of becoming instead of a world of being.

I agree with you hardcore on this.
It’s a whole lot easier to make assumptions and take what people say for granted, but it takes more effort to critically think and to not let your own personal biases clog your judgements.
Regarding social media, or the internet in general, people will look towards the most inflammatory posts and react to those the most, and many times people don’t want extra context.
Making judgements still is crucial to deciding what is healthy for us and what’s not, but I think that people are making judgements based on the wrong reasons or for too few reasons.

I agree with you. I would say that this is mostly in younger generations but it is not exactly true. I kind of think that everything has become black and white, reddit has taken over real life.
