We have more content already in our existence than we actually need forever

r/

We have more books, games, music, stories, films, paintings, you named it, more than we actually need forever. If we decided to stop creating everything we create now it would be enough and nobody would lose anything and we would live just fine.

People haven’t stopped creating since the beginning of time

  3. Honest_Bank8890 Avatar

Absolutely, but that’s the thing about being human, new media inspires new media and so on and so forth

  4. ExpertRegister1353 Avatar

If you don’t want to create you aren’t alive.

  5. xChryst4lx Avatar

No cause theres always a new angle to tackle old topics, or an old angle to tackle new topics. New words get invented that can be used in poetry, new societal issues get worked through with those poems. All of these create emotions and societal change that couldn’t be achieved by just reading the same books over and over again. New technologies get invented that innovate graphics or storytelling, animation improves drastically, new concept games are made.

I think even thinking like that is so incomprehensibly cynical. Art is important and proposing “Oh we would be so fine if we stopped” is stupid.

  6. Ok_Law219 Avatar

The needs of communication change with time.

  7. MikeRadical Avatar

Creating is not for others, its for yourself.
Its a very human thing to do.

  8. EseVatoCabron Avatar

Nah, every now and then something that we didn’t know we needed is created. Something that surpasses anything already in existance. I hope that when I’m 87, I can still listen, read, watch, experience something that makes me feel like nothing before.

  9. JustMeHere8888 Avatar

Can you imagine 50 years from now and not having any media that relates to the present?

  13. thelesserbabka_ Avatar

You’re only looking at it from a perspective of consumption though. Creating art has always been part of us and always will be.

  14. thegarymarshall Avatar

You don’t think the internet needs more p0rn and duck-face selfies?

  15. tacosauce93 Avatar

This isn’t even an opinion. It’s fact. There’s more media than anyone could consume in one lifetime.

  16. Own-Replacement-6495 Avatar

Okay humanity, content creation can stop now. Because microtico said so.

  17. martifero Avatar

the great Martifero said it first https://www.reddit.com/r/Italia/comments/18xjixh/comment/kg5pnzt/?tl=en

edit: mmm the tl parameter didn’t work, you’ll have to translate that on your own

  18. CMDR-TealZebra Avatar

I think you aren’t considering that art is a reflection of the time it was created.

Nothing we have now will resonate with people in a century.

  19. PM_ME_YOUR_TATERTITS Avatar

The problem is everyone pumping out mid content trying to make a quick buck. There’s no pride or passion in it anymore, just people trying to capitalize.

  20. Sitheral Avatar

And yet you won’t stop consuming content that’s new. What you say doesn’t matter. It’s not about how much we can consume, that number was maxed long time ago.

Its about creativity, about trends, about being social and about making money of course.

  21. ginwithnothingelsein Avatar

You want creatives to stop creating? Idk about you, but a lot of the stuff created is trash. The pools pretty small for the media I consume.

  22. Neat-Wolf Avatar

Yes, but if you apply the Pareto principle, 80% of it is garbage.
And of the 20% that remains, only a fraction of it will apply to any given individual person’s tastes or needs over their lifetime.

And of that fraction that does apply, there is still plenty of garbage content or non-existing content that could make that moment in that person’s life better.

In other words, there are still a LOT of niches that would be greatly served by new or better content. As a creator, you just have to do the digging.

  23. NotLucasDavenport Avatar

    Content? Maybe. Art? Never.

  24. Kosmopolite Avatar

Considering it “content” is probably the issue here. Yeah, you’d probably never finish every video on YouTube and Spotify in this lifetime. Nor would anyone particularly want to.

In contrast, good art is responding to things that are happening today. In the same way that you probably don’t vibe with 80s British punk if you weren’t struggling in a community hard-hit by Thatcherite policies, if all art stopped today, I think we’d have a harder time engaging with what’s going on every day, and that’s being pumped into our feeds at all times.

We’d lose a lot. We wouldn’t live just fine.

  25. ow3ntrillson Avatar

I wish this fact was more popularized. There’s a sea of content from just about every industry that people can dive into and enjoy.

  26. Davy257 Avatar

A lot of media is a reaction or commentary on modern events, can push forward social progress and educate people. Should we really give that up because people before us made a lot of content?

  27. mezonsen Avatar

It’s okay to have your opinion but I do think you’re missing out on a lot of the experience of “art” if you think this way about it. I mean, just for starters, it sure seems like creative people would lose something if we decided to stop creating.

You can’t conceive of something new and incredible being made that we’d lose out on if we arbitrarily decided the cutoff was “now”?

  28. digilici Avatar

maybe so, but that’s not going to stop anyone from creating

  29. mauore11 Avatar

Not all of it is good.

  30. Kind_Preference9135 Avatar

That is why these AI are so good. There is just too much stuff stored

  31. amkessel Avatar

Quantity does not equal quality. Netflix has an unbelievable number of movies, yet for the life of me I can’t find one on there that I haven’t seen that I want to watch.

  32. trebumptiss Avatar

This isn’t An unpopular opinion. We all know this. But creative people like to create art. The fact that we already have enough for forever literally means nothing because it’s not about that. It’s about passion and wanting to create art

  33. Pure-Plankton-4606 Avatar

    This is so fucking stupid

  34. ErkErk Avatar

    Its not food though.

Art created through the lens of a society can shed light on aspects of that society or others… and society is always changing.

    Speculation and retrospectives, right?

If you’re looking to kick back on your couch and watch the office again, sure. But that’s to the miss the point entirely in the most consumerist, uncreative, cynical way possible xD

  35. kuunami79 Avatar

Society and Culture is constantly changing so it’s impossible to ever run out of the need for content.

  36. tolgren Avatar

    This is true.

I have over 600 UNPLAYED games on Steam alone.

  37. Get72ready Avatar

Speech is thought. If we stopped creating we would have to stop thinking. It isn’t about entertainment, it is about mind

  38. Aroloco Avatar

    Thats unpopular for sure

  39. oxgnyO2000 Avatar

Someone made this argument in the 1900s, just another rendition of it ‘everything that’s going to be invented already has been’, and they couldn’t have been more wrong.

  40. Unfair_Explanation53 Avatar

The only issue I have with it, is too much choice.

I’m still working my way through tv series, computer games and films that are 5 years old.

Literally don’t have enough time to watch everything

And that’s my secret plan to deal with the AI world. Have you seen the movie>! ‘Leave the World Behind?’ !<

  42. NoBorderLastsForever Avatar

yes, but if we stop creating, then we stop being human.
We would lose everything and would not be fine

  43. oldandnumb Avatar

Yea. True. But the world actually needs more Harry Mack Fridays.

  44. highleech Avatar

It’s not about the content that gets created. It’s all about the process of creating. All life is about evolving and creating every new moment in this everlasting now that is our experience.

while we’re at it, we haven’t needed a new iphone for like five years

  49. Soft_Assistant6046 Avatar

No, because new art can reflect important events and topics of the time. Do we have enough in general, sure… but to be human is to create.

  50. Only-Finish-3497 Avatar

This is a really weird opinion.

So, you’re saying that music should have stopped at Baroque? That we shouldn’t have new art that’s written in modern language? Like, should literature have ended at Chaucer?

Should we not have made movies at all? Or plays?

This is not just “unpopular,” it’s entirely nonsensical.
