We shouldn’t be trying to get rid of daylight saving time, we should make it year round instead of standard time.

r/

It kinda sucks the sun won’t go down till like 8:40pm in the late spring and summer with DST, But it totally sucks having literally Zero daylight to enjoy in the winter if you work standard hours. I feel bad for anyone with a 9-5.

People would have more light on their commute home, Children would have more time to play outside after school. The only downside is that it will be dark while leaving to school and work in the morning, possible making it less safe for children.

On top of that we need MORE timezones. The east coast and moving towards the west makes Zero sense why there isn’t more time zones. .

This is already true in some places. Saskatchewan is in effect always on daylight time. It is expressed as “Central Standard Time,” but by longitude Saskatchewan should be in the Mountain time zone.

  10. East_Blueberry_1892 Avatar

I would love it if we kept daylight savings time year round. I would have more to do things outside during the winter months, after work.

This was tried in the 1970s and quickly became very unpopular.

  12. Snake_Eyes_163 Avatar

Started off good, then you got too wild with it. Keep the time zones, then pick either Standard or Daylight time and keep that all year round, no switching back and forth.

  13. iiiBus Avatar

If one was to be maintained then it’d have to be the one in favour of evenings.
However, I do like the system, and I think the differences are better felt in areas further north/south. In winter, the priority on short days is to get the sun to rise earlier. While in summer, when this is less of a concern, the timings are more balanced enabling a longer evening. For me its not big enough a problem to change though.

  14. underdabridge Avatar

Completely agree. But since there’s always this big fight, why can’t we just go to the 30 minute mark in between instead?

  15. LawManActual Avatar

You say it sucks the sun would set late then say it sucks to be not be able to enjoy the daylight if you work a 9-5.

If you work a 9-5 that’s almost 4 hours after work to enjoy the daylight.

Personally, I’ve never worked a 9-5 and couldn’t care less when it gets dark. I just hate redoing my clocks and watches. Pick one.

    Sometimes it’s dark…🤷‍♂️

Your last sentence is rubbish. Nobody wants to figure out whether a satellite office is 1:15 ahead of the main office and try to set virtual meetings.

  17. Quartersharp Avatar

I like it the way it is. If you make it DST year round, the Sun won’t come up until like 8:30 am in the winter here. If we do standard time year round, the Sun will come up at 4:30 am in the summer and most people will waste that hour of daylight sleeping. Hence why we “save” the “daylight” in summer time.

  20. baxtermcsnuggle Avatar

don’t get me wrong, I hate DST, but making it permanent is as long as it is short when compared to getting rid of it. lets just get rid of it. that way, the definition and function of DST stays consistant when we look back on when we observed that. that’d be more sensible than confusing future students by essentially redefining it to the point where we nullify why we did it in the first place.

  21. luffydkenshin Avatar

  23. ExpertRegister1353 Avatar

We tried it. It failed and was undone.

  24. havens1515 Avatar

That’s exactly what they are trying to do.

Right now, we could just stop having daylight savings time. But the law says that a state must either abide by the rules of daylight savings time, or not use it at all.

They’ve been trying to get that law changed to allow a case where the clocks do not change, but daylight savings time becomes permanent.

In reality, it doesn’t matter. People don’t seem to understand that. Like money, time is made up. If we want permanent daylight savings time, don’t change the clocks to permanent daylight savings time, change the time things are open. Change working hours of business. There’s a way to accomplish what people want without even changing the law, but people are too stupid to realize that.

  25. ExpertRegister1353 Avatar

Am I the only person who sees the advantages of each and glad we do it?

  26. SatBurner Avatar

I think generally the movement for eliminating daylight savings is to pick a time and stick with it.

  27. texan-yankee Avatar

Most people i know who want to get rid of it don’t understand that we’re on savings for practically 8 months and standard for 4. They think abolishing it will make the 8 months timing for all 12, not the other way around.

  28. Subject-Thought-499 Avatar

This is not truly an unpopular opinion. Endless whinging about setting clocks back and forth. JFC, it’s really not that big of a deal and the way that it optimizes daylight for the most people is actually kind of smart.

  29. Gadgitte Avatar

Hard disagree, they say it’s terrible for your circadian rhythm- part of the reason they quickly reversed the decision back when they tried it. Standard forever.

  30. ExplanationSquare438 Avatar

I couldn’t disagree more. We should move to the real actual time. I not only welcome the early nights of winter. I actually despise how it is light out till 9pm. Even longer if you count the twilight. I equally hate waking up for work in the morning while it’s still dark in the spring and summer at 7-8 am.

It’s frustrating and stressful not having that darkness in the evening to be able to wind down. It’s uneccesary and only serves to keep people at the bars later. I like being able to enjoy some of the night without being up past 11pm just because we set the clock to artificial time during a season the daylight is already long as fuck and have it dark in the mornings. I always welcome fall and and the clocks going back with the shorter days because I can actually have a few dark hours, maybe even a backyard fire, or even go out and have some nightlife and be able to get to bed before midnight. Daylight savings time is stupid as fuck and isn’t in tin with our natural rhythms and as a night lover, it makes finding time to enjoy the darkness and calm without staying up to stupid hours

  31. Itchy_Life8143 Avatar

I don’t mind the time changes, but I think they should be 2:00 AM on Saturday instead of Sunday. But if I have to choose one, it would be standard time

  32. moth-creature Avatar

8:40??? In Toronto with DST the summer sun doesn’t go down until around 10.

  33. donttouchmeah Avatar

I don’t care which one they pick, just pick one. Jesus, it triggers my Bipolar every f-ing time.

  34. Appropriate-Plant292 Avatar

STANDARD!! I bet if we kept DST through the winter y’all wouldn’t even use the daylight afterwards. Even if it got dark later it’d still be freezing cold and that tends to be a turnoff. Y’all would just be inside the warm house chilling after work the only difference being that it would be twilighting and not dark. The way it is now is better. Plus everyone would be way more tired in the mornings if the sun rose later and car accidents would skyrocket

  35. zeez1011 Avatar

Why does the sun being out an hour later in the winter matter when it’s still cold as fuck? I’d rather it be dark on my commute home than having the sun in my eyes.

  36. notacanuckskibum Avatar

More timezones? Uh, do you know how many time zones there are in the world? Hint: it’s the same as the # of hours per day. Unless you’re adding more hours there’s no way to add time zones.

  40. Orpheus_D Avatar

To be honest, I always prefer it when I have less sunlight, not more, but I’d settle for this. Anything for not having that utterly jarring change mid year.

  41. Disastrous-Nail-640 Avatar

  42. aredubblebubble Avatar

  44. limeybeaver69 Avatar

    > It kinda sucks the sun won’t go down till like 8:40pm in the late spring and summer with DST

I agree with your title, but how does it suck to have an 8:40 pm sunset? The later sunset is why we even have DST because so theres light later in the evening for activities. Also thats not even late, try living further north with 10pm sunsets or later. Its great.

  45. vttale Avatar

Quite a lot of the people who say they want to get rid of daylight saving time don’t mean they want to get rid of that particular time shift, they just want to stop doing the biannual shift at all.

I’ll hand wave on the “quite a lot” assertion, though I’m one of them and know I’m not alone.

Society will adapt to whatever the clock says. Just stop messing with it.

  46. mortalcrawad66 Avatar

I think the real unpopular opinion is keeping what we’re doing right now, and switching between the two. Which I like, but almost no one does.

  47. nor_cal_woolgrower Avatar

I agree completely. Daylight Wasting Time is awful.

  49. chief_n0c-a-h0ma Avatar

No way…I love it when it’s completely dark by like 6:00 in the winter.

  50. brainstorm17 Avatar

That’s what the common proposal actually is, people just say “get rid of daylights savings time” bc it makes more sense than saying “get rid of standard time”

  51. motorcyclecowboy007 Avatar

I want it balanced. Dst, come this late fall and winter would mean no sun till between 8 and 9 am in the morning.

  52. okhelloyeet Avatar

Yeah 100% see what you mean but standard time is better for our circadian rhythms and better sleep outweighs more sunlight. In the summer standard time sun wouldn’t set until like 6-7 PM? The 4-5 PM sundown is annoying but tbh I really don’t care if it’s dark at 7.

  53. Master-o-Classes Avatar

For me, the earlier it gets dark, the better.

  54. FriendliestParsnip Avatar

  55. TemperatureAny4782 Avatar

When people say they want to get rid of it, most of the time they mean get rid of changing from one to the other.

  56. Unique_Username2005 Avatar

My problem with daylight savings has nothing to do with what time the sun sets or rises. It’s the fact that it switches at all. Just stay on one time or the other, stop moving it around!

  57. JustATyson Avatar

I don’t care which time we picked. We just need to stop changing the time, because it’s so unhealthy.

Also, we don’t need more time zone. It’s already difficult enough administration wise to deal with the 7 timezones that we have (excluding where the territories are. I’m sorry guys, but I can’t remember. I think PR and US Virgin Islands fall under EST? Northern Mariana Islands, American Samoa, Guam, I just don’t know. I think all of you might be close to the international date line? I’m fairly confident you’re beyond Hawai’i, and Hawai’i is just a handful of timezone away from the end).

  58. whyyoutwofour Avatar

I think that’s actually what most people mean when they call for it to be abolished…they just want the time change killed and it’s actually daylight savings that they want kept (even if they don’t realize it)

  59. Glum_Helicopter6743 Avatar

I wish the times were reversed. Daylight savings in the fall and winter so the sun doesn’t set at 5:00 pm and end it in spring and summer. Or just leave it on DST.

  60. BoldBoimlerIsMyHero Avatar

I think yours is the more popular opinion. I prefer standard year round but most people I know want DST year round. I’ll settle for half the year so I get it my way at least some time.

  61. TTMSTR Avatar

Ontario passed a bill for this exact thing. We just need buy in from New York State and Quebec.

  69. collinlikecake Avatar

People overestimate what one hour gets you in the evening. There’s less daylight in winter, it’s a fact of life.

Standard time should be the standard, daylight savings time is a distortion intended to give us more evening daylight in the season that has the most daylight already.

I want standard time, they did year round daylight savings time in the Nixon administration and everyone hated it, let’s just adopt year round standard time this time instead of trying already failed experiments.

  70. ThunderChix Avatar

More time zones? Please explain in detail how exactly that would work.

  71. EvilSnack Avatar

I want standard time year-around, because I want that hour of sleep back!

  72. googlemcfoogle Avatar

Every single serious “get rid of daylight savings” suggestion I’ve heard of has actually been permanent DST. I hate it. I’ll never be in favour of the sun rising at nearly 10 AM just so people who get off at 5 can have the sun in their eyes on the way home but still no sun after they actually get home. You can’t fix days under 8 hours with time zone games.

  73. Willing_Actuary_4198 Avatar

Couldn’t care less which one they pick just fucking choose one and leave it

  74. jimfosters Avatar

  75. Life_Membership7167 Avatar

Later sunsets please. It’s useless to me at 5:30 AM.

  76. Revolutionary-Ad2186 Avatar

I’m always surprised when people get so affected by the time change. My sleep duration must have a 4 hour standard deviation. Sometimes I’m getting 10 hours and sometimes I’m getting 2 hours. I can’t imagine having a sufficiently stable schedule to where I would even notice.

  77. JediFed Avatar

Disagree. The problem with year round DST vs Standard time, is in fact the incorrectly aligned time zones. They are already shifted about an hour before local noon. DST effectively shifts more than two hours from local noon.

Year round standard time for most locations in NA is actually year round DST, as the time zones are off that much.

DST should be eliminated but we should move to standard time.

  78. Independent-You-6180 Avatar

I don’t think anyone cares, making DST year-round counts as getting rid of it since all we want is just this pointless clock changing bullshit to cease.

  79. ha1029 Avatar
