As the title says. For the younger generation, lacking this skill is becoming more common. It’s either because your parents didn’t have time to teach you or because you don’t have time to teach yourself. It’s the same way reading and writing in cursive is dying out. I understand this is a pet peeve for some, but I don’t see the big deal.
Edit: Some comments are assuming I’m saying it’s ok to not know or want to learn how to cook. I never said that. I said it’s ok if you don’t have time to learn. Lots of people DO know how to cook and still often choose to order out anyway. They probably do it just as much. So what’s the difference between that and someone who doesn’t know how?
Edit 2: Comments are saying cooking is necessary for survival. Yes in the grand scheme of things, but here in America, most people survive just fine without knowing. People who can cook use delivery apps just as much.

no we definitely should. it’s the ultimate form of learned helplessness. There are so many free resources out there, and we all need to eat.
It amazes me how many people will spend hundreds and hundreds monthly to avoid having to cook
Cooking and cursive aren’t comparable in that at all.
I will judge you — the basics aren’t hard. Most cooking is just making things hot enough. If you’re an adult, you have everything you need to cook an egg.
Comparing cursive to a basic necessity is wild.
I don’t judge you if you’re not an awesome cook, but if you literally are incapable of feeding yourself, then yes I will judge you. As a wise woman once said, “your momma didn’t teach you how to suck dick, but you can still suck dick”.
Mofos learn how to do all types of shit….But cooking is the challenge? You can’t follow a recipe? Naw Im judging you. Children can cook. Its ok if you’re lazy but just own it.
Eating chicken nuggies every night for dinner isn’t a quirky feature, it’s pathetic.
Actually, we should. Because information on learning how to cook is ALSO more readily available. Get yourself a set of pans, a couple of good knives, and open up YouTube. There’s an endless supply of new cooking content, every day.
The problem is cooking is just following directions. Sure there’s levels to it but nobody is asking them to be Gordon Ramsey lol. Look at the directions do exactly what it says and you’ll be fine.
We should definitely judge adults for not having basic life skills
Cooking is a basic life skill. Maybe someone didn’t teach you. Doesn’t excuse expecting others to do it. Carry your own weight, as often as possible.
One is pure laziness, the other is essentially a useless skill for aesthetics only.
Apples and oranges comparison.
I mean not being able to cook is something to judge over because it’s never too late to learn and you actually need it
It is 10000% not the same way that cursive is dying out. I type at least like 1000 words a day, I hate cursive.
I also still need to cook and eat food
Not being able to cook as an adult is an insane level of incompetence.
The only people I judge for not being able to cook are all those ‘cooking’ channels that think crushed takis and flaming hot cheetos belong on everything.
This opinion is dumb as fuck. Cooking IS a life skill. Cursive is not. They’re NOT the same at all. Cooking is something everyone should have a basic understanding of.
Ah yes, Forever children. Always relying on a real adult to provide sustenance.
Being able to cook healthy balanced meals that are tasty enough that you can continue to eat them for the majority of your meals is an extremely important life skill.
Adults that can’t cook should absolutely be judged.
Nah, trash excuses on top of a poor comparison. No one’s asking these people to cook 5-star meals, just be able to do the most basic of dishes. They don’t take too much time for simple dishes.
There is a difference between professional chef and the very basics of being able make yourself a meal. It is SUPER easy, they even have competitions where CHILDREN cook. Come on man.
I only the judge the grown men that I’ve heard say that men shouldn’t cook (grilling excluded of course), and that me (a grown man) making cheesecake was “super gay.”
Whatever man. More cake for me.
Comparing cursive to cooking is wild.
Nobody taught me and I just learned. Its a basic skill that is not even difficult to do. People who don’t know how to cook are only unable to cook because they are stubbornly lazy.
So yea I’m judging, I’m judging hard
Learning to cook, and learning to write by hand are two massively different things.
Cooking is a simple matter of reading instructions, maybe watching a video, and doing it. Yes, it takes some practice to get some recipes right, but most and insanely easy.
Yes we should. And I do. You’re not splitting the atom. It’s making food. It’s not hard to learn a few basics. No one is expecting you to be Gordon Ramsey.
I don’t need to write cursive to survive, food on the other hand…
My brother made jabs at me cooking craft mac and pasta for 6 months after I left my parents before I made a slightly more advanced meal (skillet macaroni and cheese).
My mother throws back “You’ve been gone for 6 years and only just started making something not boiling pasta (first time he’d BBQ’d”
Their is a difference between Gordon Ramsey and someone who can cook something. I don’t care if you only know a handful of dishes but if your someone who needs to microwave tv dinners then that’s a problem.
Definitely not judge…. But it is a basic life skill. A survival skill really. There is literally resources everywhere to help you cook. You can’t blame your parents forever when you are an adult. You are an adult so Take control of your life. Get a cook book, watch yt videos, or social media reels. Like there is no excuse.
Maybe we shouldn’t judge them on not knowing how to cook as much as we should judge them on their (un)willingness to learn how to cook
Basic cooking is so easy, how the fuck people don’t know how to do it
If you have time to go to a restaurant, stop by somewhere and pick up take out, or to order and wait for food to be delivered, then you have time to cook. The more you practice, the better you get at finding efficiencies.
But ultimately, cooking for yourself is a necessity when it comes to getting a wide variety of nutrients and avoiding harmful nutrients or too much sodium.
Considering that opening up a can of soup and heating it up on the stove qualifies as cooking, then there really isn’t any excuse. Plenty of whole foods can be prepared simply by boiling them in water, so yeah, it is a big deal to not know how to do that.
Really, your parents who are cooking don’t have the time for you to watch them cook and ask questions? I am thinking this has a great deal more with a younger generation not wanting to learn, then realizing how expensive restaurants are.
My parents never taught me to cook yet I can. Use recipes and learn by trial and error. Not that hard
>It’s the same way reading and writing in cursive is dying out.
Cursive won’t fill your stomach to survive my guy
Cooking is one of the easiest things to learn. Sure we joke about burning water but there are so many simple things you can make that dont need like to be ‘cooked’ with an oven/microwave/whatever.
Not being able to cook is the laziest excuse I’ve ever heard. More so when you claim that’s why you order out then double down you dont have time to learn but have hours to play a game or hang out with friends
I’m 40 I can cook a total of 3 meals really well if the hubby doesn’t want 1 of those 3 he’s a fantastic cook though so I’m good lol.
They didn’t have time to teach? They couldn’t have done it WHILE they were cooking dinner for the night?
When someone says they can’t cook, I assume they can’t read either because there’s a recipe for anything. Being an adult and not being able to follow simple recipes to take care of yourself is shame worthy.
Yes. I will judge an adult who can’t cook. You have a source of infinite information in your pocket, look up a damned instruction video and learn.
Stop making excuses for utter laziness. This is not about cursive handwriting or reading. This is about feeding yourself properly and surviving.
And I don’t think people should be given a pass for not reading unless they have a disability affecting that particular skill, either.
No it is not just about you not having time for you or your parents. That’s blatantly stupid.
Learning to cook is a choice. Some make that choice, some don’t. I’m personally not going to judge people either way. But if they say they can’t cook, and expect it to be done for them, that is an issue with me. If they are physically capable, they should at least try to learn and make an effort.
I wholeheartedly agree, and with that here is a simple sandwich recipe:
Get you some simple Italian bread loaf for a French bread loaf, if you live in the US you can get it at Walmart
Get you some sliced meat of your choice
Get you some sliced cheese of your choice
Get you some lettuce
Get you some tomato
Get you some pickle
Get you some mustard
Get you some mayonnaise
Get you some onions
Get you some olives
If there’s anything on that list you don’t like then you can leave it out.
All you do is you go home, you take your bread, you slice it down the middle all the way and cut it in half, lay it on a pan on the crust side. Then you going to fill up your sandwich with all your ingredients, so you’d put for example your sliced me, cheese, and your cut up onions, just lay it on. Like put some meat down then put your cheese and put your whatever on, then maybe put you some more meat down and some more cheese, however way you want to do it. You can’t fail.
Put it in the oven for 10 minutes on 300 to 350. Check it in between because some ovens are different, but 10 minutes should suffice.
Once it’s done you take it out, make sure you use an oven mitt cause it’s hot.
Then you’re going to put the rest of your stuff on, olives, mayonnaise, mustard, pickles, and you lettuce.
Once that’s done you just put it together, you take some skewers or some toothpicks and poke like four or five of them through the sandwich in a line, that way it holds it together better, then you take a sharp knife and you cut it in sections.
You’re welcome, enjoy.
Cooking is a gift you give yourself. All your favorite dishes you can master and eat good all the time.
If you can’t cook because you’ve always been wealthy enough to pay for cooked food, go nuts.
But if you’re broke and live off mr.noodles and cereal because you ‘don’t know how to cook and can’t afford takeout’, grow tf up and figure it out.
Or don’t, but I don’t wanna hear any complaints
We teach our kids survival skills. My kids could find a restuarant, get seated, flag down a server and order food by the time they were six (so needed me to pay for it. ) They could also make a sandwich, cook rice, pour a bowl of cereal, and make boxed brownies by the time they were eight. They figured out cookbooks on their own, and got ambitious from watching Chopped Kitchen. Any thing they’ve learned about outdoor living, including campfire cooking has been on them to figure out.
Naw if you can’t cook at all I’m judging you. You don’t have to Chef Ramsey it but you learn basic cooking skills in elementary school.
Okay, but you can always learn, no? It’s not that difficult to follow directions, either. Following a recipe isn’t that hard. It’s the fact that people never take the time to learn. There’s no excuse.
My parents didn’t teach me how to drive so do you know what I did? Taught myself. Adults can teach themselves how to cook. There is zero excuse. It’s cheaper than eating out.
Nah I will judge them. Being able to feed yourself properly is a basic life skill
If an adult is eating take out or frozen food for every meal, I’m definitely going to judge them.
Cooking isn’t hard.
If you moved out of your parents and you can’t cook basic food to feed yourself…that’s an issue
This is dumb. Anyone who cannot cook is a troglodyte.
There’s no excuse to not know how to cook.
Whether your parents taught you or not, YouTube exists and has for going on 2 decades now. You can teach yourself, easily.
“but here in America, most people survive just fine without knowing.”
43% Obesity Rate in the US
In 2023, the official poverty rate in the United States was 11.1%, which is 36.8 million people.
No, they don’t.
Cooking is an important skill you must have unless you are rich and can eat in good restaurants everyday.
Access is really easy there are thousand and thousands recipes you can find easily thanks to Youtube/Tiktok (even tho tiktok recipes… mmmm well, not all are goods)/etc., you can have italian mommas telling you the right recipes and you have access to all the ingredients of the world (almost) in the US.
You have no reason to not know how to cook, it saves your life. There’s a lot of skills it’s weird to not have as an adult but you have reasons to not learn them (not the time to learn, doesn’t interest you, requires money/tools/, etc.). For cooking however, you don’t have any excuses.
Now I must say that with your 2 days PTO a year and rampant opioids addiction, yeah maybe in the US you don’t really think about saving your own life
But this is a real problem that must be addressed and is not normal
I know what it’s like to not have time to teach yourself things, but recipes are so plentiful, you don’t really need to understand what you’re doing to cook. You just need to be able to read instructions.
I don’t have time to learn a language or teach myself geography, unfortunately, but if I have a couple hours I can follow a recipe.
There are step by step video cooking lessons. If you can’t follow a step by step video recipe it’s due to gross incompetence.
Yes we should because your post is justifying someone refusing to learn how to make simple amd basic foods. Can’t sit there and make an excuse for someone who doesn’t have the common sense to boil pasta and make pasta. Doesn’t take much to then know to sear some chicken and mushrooms and then mix with pasta and throw in your sauce. So yes, I will ridicule those who don’t know how when it’s so simple.
Your post also wants to validate what many young adults complain about. Ordering out costs more than making food and what’s the common gripe from young adults? That they don’t have enough to survive. Well quit fucking ordering out and LEARN TO COOK and you’ll see how much more you save. Everyone has time, they just choose not to. So forgive me, yes your post definitely is unpopular because it caters to the lazy in our world
I judge people who think people shouldn’t be judged
