what are people’s experience with the hormonal iud?

r/

so, I currently take the pill to stop my periods, and it works great. I’ve been on two different types, the combined and the progesterone only pill, and they both stopped my periods immediately. however, i struggle with rememberimg to take it sometimes due to mental health conditions, and considered getting the hormonal iud. the implant and injections kind of scare me, and the iud is scary too, but the idea of potentially having no periods for up to 10 years when the pill worked so well for me is appealing. my mother had a good experience with it, but ive also heard a lot of people don’t. could anyone share their experiences with it?

I had a Mirena and I absolutely loved the convenience of having an extremely high effectiveness that didn’t depend on me to remember anything, and I especially loved having my periods go mostly away. There’s always going to be individual experiences that are good or bad, but this study looked at how women felt about long acting contraception compared to pills, and the satisfaction rates were very high for IUDs.

I’m on my second one, and I’ve been super happy. Insertion sucks, won’t sugar coat that. My first one, I didn’t have any drugs, and had sporadic cramps for a few weeks. It took about a year for my period to fully stop, but it was very light. My second, I asked for drugs, so I went in high as a damn kite. Still sucked A LOT, but I came home, took a 6 hour nap, and woke up feeling right as rain.

Personally, I’m a huge fan of an IUD for those who can. Tamperproof, long term, and no periods are all huge bonuses.

I’m on my third Mirena, with a break in the middle to have a baby.

I love it for so many reasons, not the least being that I don’t really get a period any more. I don’t have a lot of sex at the moment but would still use it for that reason alone.

I’ve used it long enough to not be able to tell if any weight gain, etc, is from it, or from a lifetime’s naturally changing body.

The downside is that, like about 10% of users, it triggered ovarian cysts. They’re quite painful, but manageable and worth the benefits.

I have a mirena, 1.5 years into it. No periods. It friggen rules, wish I had done it years ago. My doctor said it to me this way – he had been working in obgyn for 30 years and it is the method that 95% of his female coworkers/nurses & staff prefer. That was enough for me. Oh and I lost 15lbs that the pill had tacked onto me over the last ten years so that was a plus.
