Some warlords kidnap children and make them soldiers. They don’t have a choice in the matter. By the time they grow up they really have no where else to go, assuming they could even escape. I suppose the perk then is just continued life.
Those countries rarely have a stable economy or any kind of civil structure. You’re either a victim or the victimizer and they pick up a lot of these “soldiers” as children and they end up knowing no other life but the one they were indoctrinated into.
This isn’t some situation of “well, he could have just worked at McDonald’s and made enough to feed and home himself, why would he risk death with a warlord”

Oftentimes it’s the difference in eating and not eating.

In places that hve warlords the perks would include getting food and water whenever you wanted.
