What are you supposed to do with a miscarriage?

r/

After seeing that a woman was arrested for having a miscarriage and disposing it in the trash (and another woman who miscarried into a toilet back in October) – is there protocol? Are you supposed to bring it to the ER or some place to be disposed of?

while certainly I would never tell a woman who had one what she has to do, from a practical standpoint it can just be disposed of. many early miscarriages happen on the toilet and it’s just flushed.

I believe you’re supposed to throw it at the house of your nearest Republican senator

Depends on how far along it is, I would assume. And where the miscarrying person is. One US state tried to or did get a law passed that you have to have a funeral for the zygote no matter the age.

Depends on how far along and local laws but it’s generally a good idea to consult a healthcare professional.

Deliver the deceased baby at the hospital 🏥

The one that got arrested was in a state where they have f!ed up laws on women’s bodies. I think they are of the opinion that she terminated it and is trying to prosecute her for it.

I honestly do not know how they can get away with laws like this. I don’t know why women have just stopped sleeping with the men from these places?

I had a miscarriage at 13 weeks gestation in the state of Indiana shortly before the abortion ban went into effect there. While in the ER waiting room, I passed the fetus and asked the nurse what to do with it. She told me to “just throw it away.”

The seemingly normal thing to do is flush or dispose of the tissue somehow.

Before 20 weeks women are often advised to flush the remains unless they have personal or religious convictions guiding them overwise. After 20 weeks is typically considered still born, in theory the hospital will handle disposal. Can be anything from biohazard bag to cremation. There’s not many rules around how it’s handled and many women experiencing miscarriage are sent home to essentially bleed it out alone with ibuprofen. Or go to work because miscarriage and still birth aren’t always considered eligible for leave.

depends on jurisdiction and developmental stage. it’s either bio-hazardous material or a corpse, both of which are also heavily regulated.

Depends on how far along you are.

Very early in the pregnancy, a miscarriage is more like a period and its just blood (clots). Then you do just wear heavy pads and throw them in the trash

But further along in the pregnancy, a miscarriage is a small baby and the miscarriage is the same process as a birth. it counts as human remains and need to be properly exposed off. (Just for clarification, human remains doesn’t mean that its a human being… before pro life comes and takes it as some sort of new argument. When they amputate your foot, its also human remains)

But America is fucking weird for making it a crime.

In the USA before 20 weeks gestation people typically will either flush or will retrieve the remains to bury or pay for a cremation. After 20 weeks there needs to be a death certificate issued and it’d be treated as an infant death.

i feel like with the size of the clots i pass on my period, and the pain of my cramps, i’ve probably flushed a miscarriage or two

jk, i know it feels much worse and different than that, but fr im sure it happens more often than we’ll ever know. flushing it should be normal.

i don’t think some ppl understand that if it was so noticeably a fetus, the person was probably planning to keep it, had already had a couple ultrasounds, and would go to the hospital.

Even if there was a protocol for the remains and she followed them to a T, they’d have found a way to punish her for it anyway. There is no logic behind any of these anti-abortion laws, it is simply a way to punsih women.

I advise any woman going through that to call 911 before flushing

Mine happened on the toilet. Except one. I was hemorrhaging not knowing I was pregnant it was so early. I was told in the E.R. For my own health I’d call emergency services.

umm it’s ok to flush it and if you still have it then you go to the doctor because they’ll have to help you remove it and no you won’t get arrested for it

Idk but I’ve had an ectopic pregnancy and we were very sad since we tried for this baby and loved him/her. I guess I would have just died and left behind my 3 kids ages: 6, 3 & 1.5 (at the time). These new laws are disgraceful and more men/husbands/fathers should be outraged for their wives/daughters/sisters.

    Wtf.

Until about 6 weeks, it’s just a period. They call it a chemical miscarriage.

As of about 12 weeks, the fetus gets big enough that you need an evacuation aka an abortion. Most clinics don’t allow men to come to the procedure.

Just to be sure, women should start mailing all their pads to the idiots who voted for this, just in case….
