What are your expectations for the new pope, Leo XIV?

r/

Leão XIV for brazilians.

Latin America has the largest Catholic population in the world, and a pope is definitely important for us.

After an Argentine pope, we have again a pope with a strong connection to the region, having spent much of his career in Peru and other countries here, and held the position of president of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America.

What is your first impression of this pope? What do you expect from him?

Maybe there is someone here who knew him, what do they think of him?

I expect him to continue with Francis’ views and reforms for a more progressive Church.

I hope he is a nice guy. The world is hard enough without a pope spreading hateful words

  3. ruines_humaines Avatar

Going to make it smooth for child abusers, as our boy Francis did and still be a conservative force that loses power and relevancy day by day.

  4. Obama_prismIsntReal Avatar

I just want him to be nice and not deranged, basically another Francis. I feel bad for him because he will have to deal with trump and his goblins trying to befriend him.

    >Prevost has faced criticism from advocates for clergy abuse survivors regarding his handling of sexual abuse allegations during his leadership in the Augustinian order and in Peru. The advocacy group SNAP (Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests) has alleged that Prevost failed to act against abuse claims involving Richard McGrath, a former president of Providence Catholic High School, allowing him to remain in his position despite longstanding accusations.

Yeah, I expect more of the same.

I thought Nostradamus said that the new Pope was supposed to be black?

  7. MlkChatoDesabafando Avatar

Apparently, he was a personal friend of Father Gustavo Gutierrez, one of the founders of the liberation theology. Hopefully this should help counterweight the far-right trend through the globe. He’s also the first augustinian pope afaik, which may be interesting.

I wasn’t expecting a Pope Leo, though. I was betting one either Peter John (brainfart, I though the anglicization of João was Peter for some reason) or Celestine.

The choice of an American and progressive pope in the Trump era is surprising.

Me han reemplazado a Pancho con un gringo, qué coño, “Make Christian Great Again”? Solo espero que no sea un “yes sir”.

wait nothing, and you might not be disappointed. Jokes aside, I hope for a success of him, I might not agree with the Church in many ways, but he will be the leader of an institution that DOES mean a lot for a bit more than 20% of humans 😛

    Don’t care.

I was against pope Francis and of course, against the continuation of his doctrine, so it sucks imo

Hard not to imagine that the choice of a US pope has at least something to do with handling the Big Orange’s government; then again, Prevost seems mostly progressive-leaning, especially in his views regarding immigrants and refugees. So maybe it’s unfair to assume he’ll align himself with the orange’s interests just because he’s from the US.

Not gonna lie though, I was dreaming about Zuppi and hoping for Tagle :/

Right the ship. It’s a growing congregation and it helps a billion people. It can be and should be managed better and corrected.

    We’re happy in Peru

  19. WonderfulAd7151 Avatar

they just be letting anybody be pope now

  20. _palantir_ Avatar

My true wish would be for it not to matter because the Pope should have no influence outside of his own flock, but sadly that’s not the world we live in, especially in Latin America.

So, since he will inevitably have an influence on the world at large, I hope he leads the church away from hate and focuses on helping those who need it the most (and isn’t that what Jesus was all about, anyway?).

  21. Gandalior Avatar

Apparently he did a lot of work in Perú, and was appointed (is that the word??) by Francis, so he might be in line with the “reformation” that had been happening

  22. rdfporcazzo Avatar

I expect him to reinforce the role of the Catholic Church in helping the poor and vulnerable

  23. Starwig Avatar

As long as the case of the abusers from the Sodalicio in Peru continues and everyone in that sect is condemned, then I’m happy. He spent like 20 years in Peru and has done stuff in favour of the victims, like expelling one of the abuser priests.

  24. joseash27 Avatar

To continue Francis work and to be a beacon of hope for the USA they are going to need it

  25. CollegeCasual Avatar

There is a prophecy that the next Pope will be named Peter so I’m betting on one of those guys

  26. Joseph20102011 Avatar

He is more Peruvian than American for having spent two-thirds of his life as a cleric in Peru, eventually becoming Bishop of Chiclayo from 2015 to 2023 before he was chosen as Pope Leo XIV.

Fun fact: he already visited my homeland, Cebu, Philippines, way back 2004.

  29. braujo Avatar

I think he’ll be more malleable than Francis was, and I expect his papacy to not have half the controversies that surrounded the previous one. He’ll also be much more forgivable and will likely be around for a long-ass time.

  30. intisun Avatar

I’m not religious but since the world is increasingly fascistic, it’s good if this influential person brings a progressive counterbalance. It’s ironic that it would come from a quintessentially conservative institution like the Catholic church. But hey, even compassion and empathy are called ‘woke’ now so he we are.
