What dialect of Spanish do you choose in software when yours isn’t available?

r/

I was browsing the language settings in the Gemini app (Google’s AI), where you can select up to 2 different languages, and some of them (English, Spanish, Chinese, German, etc.) have several versions. For example, I have English(US) and español(España), so I Iooked up what Spanish dialects were available, and they were: Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Spain, United States, Mexico, and Peru.

So, I wonder what people from Bolivia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Uruguay, Venezuela, and Puerto Rico choose in those circumstances.

Edit: One of the reasons I chose the Gemini app as an example is because it’s not only text-based, you can also chat with voice, and it can do different accents.

I just pick whatever, never noticed a big difference. Right now I have Spain Spanish on.

I’m used to just using all software and video games in US English. This is because back when I started gaming video games were never in Spanish. The phone I used during high school did not have Spanish. My very first laptop was in Spanish, but when I formatted it the first time, my pirate copy of Windows XP was only in English lol.

I choose the Spain dialect in those cases

I have never seen Peruvian Spanish as an option. I always go with Latin American if that’s an option or if it’s country specific I choose Spain. I don’t think it makes much of a difference honestly, software doesn’t use slang.

I just go for regular English, if they have español (Latin American) it’s enough for me. From your case I’d just choose Mexico, but in reality I’d just go for English.

    English.

Actually I usually choose English even when Spanish is available. It’s a great way to practice the language.

In our case, whenever someone talks about the "Argentinian dialect" they’re actually referring to the Rioplatense dialect, which is spoken in Uruguay and parts of Argentina, such as Buenos Aires. However, not everyone in Argentina speaks Rioplatense, as there are several other dialects in different regions. So technically, my dialect is available 😀

    Español de España

I go any latin American country over Spain. And if there are multiple latin American countries I pick the closest one geographically. In this example I would choose Peru.

I just choose Mexico since most of the times the "Mexican dialect" is the one used for dubs so I’m used to the ways they call things. But I have no problem choosing other dialects since most of it doesn’t actually changes since they always try to make it "neutral Spanish".

“Neutral” Latin America. Which is a toned down Mexico D.F accent. This is the dialect of dubbed cartoons we get in Venezuela. ( DBZ in Spanish from Spain is awful ).

All my tech/voice to text/assistants/etc. are in US English, and the Alexas are in US EN/MX ES IIRC.

I would chose ANY dialect, even Equatorial Guinean Spanish before lispy-ass Iberian Spanish.

It’s like nails on a chalkboard to me, I can’t stand it.

I prefer having it in English, however if I need to choose any Spanish dialect it’ll either be from Mexico (closest to neural) or argentinian (sometimes it sounds weird)… I’ll honestly pick any latin american dialect over Spain Spanish
