What did you stop doing after 30 that made life noticeably better?

r/

I’m early 30s and noticing that dropping certain things has a bigger ROI than adding more goals. For you, what did you quit or cut back on that moved the needle most? Examples welcome like checking work email after 7pm, chasing every group chat, news before breakfast, junk sleep times, drinking during the week, taking every “quick favor,” doomscrolling in bed, overtraining, or saying yes to plans you don’t want. What did you remove, how did you do it, and what changed?

Hanging out with friends or colleagues that I didn’t really like. I now spend core time with people that are important to me. It’s so much more enjoyable than saying yes to everyone else when you get invited.

Taking shots and drinking past my limit

Going to clubs and getting smashed because I felt like I had to, now I’m in bed by 10pm most nights and I love it.

I also left behind ‘hustle culture’ and feeling like I had to be really successful in my career to have a good life. I’m so much happier now that I don’t burn myself out and prioritise my wellbeing.

Watching the news, I look up topics that concern me or that I’m interested in.

Culled my friends list. Only kept people I talk to or who have added considerable value to my life.

    Ditched all other social media.

I don’t go out drinking, well I rarely drink, I have two bottles of an exceptional scotch that I have a taste of occasionally. Expensive but cheaper than dozens of cheap beers over a year.

I adopted buy once, cry once for just about everything. It’s cheaper to buy a good product than 5 cheap ones. Except daily clothes, they get flogged so $10 polos unless I have to look good.

Drinking beyond four or five pints on weekend nights out. I got the same socialisation vibe, but was able to function the next day.

I did everything you listed between 23 and 27, over 30 I actually started taking on new activities and hobbies mainly to improve my health and fitness.

Got married and “settled down” in every aspect of my life. I was pretty balls to the wall with everything, it was wearing me down.

Eat dinner earlier and eat carbs earlier in the day, but not after about 6pm.
Including beers. If i feel like an evening drink, more spirits, but not enough to disturb my sleep. Beers during the day.

I stopped smoking! The reduction in anxiety was monumental, and saved a lot of money too.

Playing video games for hours on end. I still play still video games though, but only for 1 or 2 hours at most. When I was younger I could play for 12 hours straight.

For me it was stopping the habit of saying yes to everything as I realized half the stress in my life came from agreeing to plans, favors or commitments I didn’t actually want to do.

Working out and focusing on my health. And stopped drinking alcohol

I stopped social media. I’m only in Reddit now. Baby steps I guess. Anyways, not seeing feeds has made most aspects of my life better.

Started going to the gym at 40+ and started minimized drinking significantly. For work, I only work business hours whenever possible. I’m in healthcare IT so it’s a challenge. Invest! It’s free money. Also, invest, it’s free money!

Drinking and smoking. The idea of being hungover and smelling like an ashtray the next day makes me sick. Now i enjoy 1-2 drinks and I’m fresh the next day.
