What do salvadoreños (and other latinos) think of the arrangement between Donald Trump and El Salvador to send people from the US to CECOT without first having court trials or court processes in the US? Trump is currently doing this with illegal Latin American immigrants, and he has now said that he wants to send American citizens who are criminals to CECOT too. (Trump hasn’t said whether those suspects, the American citizens, will be allowed court trials or not.)
All of the Latin Americans being deported to CECOT have not been allowed to have any trials, and in several cases, the courts actually said some of those people were allowed to stay in the US, even though they had some violations. There have also been some people who were awaiting trials (they already had their appointments), but Trump deported them to CECOT before they could attend their trials.
On a related note, if I understand correctly the things that I’ve read about El Salvador, most salvadoreños support the mass jailings in El Salvador to lock away salvadoreño gang members in that country because El Salvador was at a crisis level. Please note that I’m not asking about that, but if anyone wants to add their opinions on that, I’m always happy to learn more info.
Thank you 🙂

Doesn’t matter how many people try to justify it, it’s still fascism
It’s an embarrasment, a blight and neo colonialism. El Salvador is a banana republic.
Penal colony
Yeah Bukele can get fucked for this one.
El Salvador mask off military dictatorship with the U.S. funding it and Salvadoran politicians sucking Trump and Elons you know what.
Just a coincidence the r/ElSalvador sub showed up in my feed earlier today with a post critical of Bukele. Pretty much all the responses were in support of Bukele like he was some savior to which I say enjoy that temporary deal with the devil.
It’s going to backfire. ES doesn’t have power to return illegals to the USA and is getting 20k/year per inmate, it might actually come ahead.
If you think about it, despite the gross human rights violations committed by the NATO allies in foreign wars trials are rare.
Ultimately to avoid deportation it’s advisable to immigrate legally.
The ones that will come on top are the legal residents that got deported without an investigation, for those guys its a waiting game and the longer they wait the more $$$ they can expect in compensation, in due time.
Disgusting and tragic how Bukele is abusing his power and also awful they defend him
El Salvador officially became a satellite state, and as you say, the US is inching on using it for internal repression, Trump isn’t even bothering to boil the frog slowly, his henchmen are already saying that people criticizing him for not abiding by rule of law are “abetting terrorism”.
Trump is also trying to take over the Central Bank-equivalent, that’s how you get a dictator that has you carrying wheelbarrows of money and standing in bread lines, you guys are pretty fucking fucked and I wouldn’t blame any gringo if they want to flee with how fast Trump is going.
It’s a shame how Bukele and his supporters are okay with having extermination camps in their nation all for some check from the US.
When Trump goes down so will Bukele. El Salvador will never come back from this.
I think it’s wonderful.
It’s an arrangement between two pathetic, small dick dictators from two banana republics, which breaks every single human right.
Both Americans and Salvadorans should be ashamed and should be out on the streets raising hell.
Sadly, hardly anyone cares.
Dictators agreement when trump goes down he is going to fuck up el salvador
It’s fucking embarrassing. I wish I could say it’s gratifying to have my intuition about Bukele be confirmed, but it’s not. Many innocent people are getting caught up in this. And all the talking heads that whitewashed his authoritarianism are at least partially to blame.
I remember that before, during Biden’s term, I was actually rooting for Bukele for standing up to the US and their imperialistic tendencies, even though I didn’t support all of what he did.
And then, he just rolls over and becomes a US bitch once again.
Complete recession into barbarism
I do have a question for the Salvadoreños. You know that back in the day Chile had Colonia Dignidad. It was basically a German cult hiding out in Chile headed by a notorious pedophile. Ultimately Pinochet protected them in exchange for using their remote outpost as a torture prison for many of his enemies. I see the entire nation of El Salvador as a new Colonia Dignidad but for the orange pin8. Do you have any thoughts on this?
I hate it. They did mass deportations of US citizens of Mexican, Japanese and Chinese origin back in the 30’s through the 60’s. It’s wrong and we’re repeating history and fascism
I would have denounced both presidents internationally! how come a FIRST WORLD COUNTRY THAT’S SUPPOSED TO BE THE BEACON OF DEMOCRACY AND CIVIL RIGHTS is deporting people into a prison that is known for violating human rights? And that’s not everything, deporting people into another country will allow the executive branch to just “wash their hands” for any kind of “mistake” that happens to the prisoners, local judges can’t do anything because they don’t rule in other countries, Bukele can just say “No” and there it goes your hope to even having a small chance to get out of it alive. Americans get your shit straight, you laugh now at immigrants, but if Trump can get away from it now, nothing will stop Trump from doing that to you.
The whole thing is horrendous. The only thing that gives me some kind of hope is that when the pendulum swings back, Bukele will deeply regret what he’s done.
Well for one, I believe a large portion of those who came to the USA seeking “asylum” in the past couple of years are just lying and took advantage of TPS and the backed up asylum courts, most are just poor people looking for a better life. A lot of these people were just fine where they were, including my Haitian/Dominican girlfriend…she was fine in DR but because Haitians could get TPS , she took a flight back to Haiti to get a new Haitian passport and then tried her luck at the Mexican border, and now I’m enjoying a nice young thing. Regardless of that, plenty of fake asylum seekers thats for sure, many passed a bunch of safe countries as well to strategically claim asylum in the USA. Biden created TPS supposedly as a 2 year thing, knowing full well these people would never want to leave. Todays “immigrants” are often given a bunch of aid and other things, Venezuelans were given so much in NYC/NJ where I am, when my mom came from Peru in the 80’s there was no help or free hotel nights, there was hard work.
As far as criminals like MS13 , Tren de Aragua, etc, if they have crossed into the USA on false asylum, then they should be kicked out for sure and I dont care if they go to El Salvador’s prison. For those that haven’t committed crimes in the USA, and dont have a rap sheet in their home country either, then I’d say they can be given a chance since they are already in the USA. Though if their asylum case is unfounded, they need to go back too. This isn’t the 20th century where the USA really did need mass immigration.
Those awaiting a trial or being swept up as “just taken as well” , thats def unfair, especially if a court said they were good to stay.
As far as USA criminals going to CECOT, If they are high level violent offenders/worst of the worst, I’d love to outsource their repayment. Prisoners get the works in the USA, tablets….TV’s….you name it, I bet you people stop doing major crimes if they know they can be shipped to El Salvador.
Quoting a tweet I found very insightful on the situation:
>”when bukele’s death camp eventually implodes, the resulting narcoguerrilla will be 1 million times worse for the whole region than TdA or MS13 could ever dream”
Bukele is what trump is to Putin. His bitch. Bukele is a dictator in a tin pot country that is happy to get any little scraps he can from the US. I hope every country in Latin America isolates them and refuse to trade with them. It’s not like they produce anything useful anyways.
My opinion is that it’s concerning the amount of latinamericans who were surprised by it. Given the history of the US, I’d expect this and worse from them
