It seems that everyone and their mom knows throwing tariffs at every country around the world is not going to help the US economy. Most are saying it will do the opposite and cause wide spread inflation and a recession. The stock market is down and prices are still going up. How do Trump supporters still support this?

They believe in “temporary pain for long term gain”, but we will see how long that actually lasts for the less deranged among them
How about you go ask conservatives?
Honestly, I don’t understand why we get these types of questions here when there’s an entire subreddit where you can ask this very thing to conservatives themselves. If you have questions for conservatives/Republicans, go ask them yourself in the place specifically made for it.
They’ll be quiet and question things for 1-2 days before they get new marching orders and have a new cope to spew and shit on libs and their own dissidents.
Since they can’t say this is about fentanyl or “securing trade deals” anymore they’re going to have to start buying into the infantile economic perspective that trade deficits are evil and tariffs will make the American economy grow in the long run.
I support this under the same rationale every other country on earth uses to place tarrifs on imports. It protects their industries.
Isn’t there a sub for asking Trump supporters?
Wrong sub.
It’ll be a couple days before their firmware update gets pushed down, then we’ll find out.
fox news told them its a sacrifice similar to the way that everyone pitched in during WWII. and no I am not kidding
You can ask only conservatives at r/AskPolitics.
I think you might be a little lost
From what I’ve seen on the conservative subreddit they’re pretty divided. Many are not a fan (I’m of course not a fan but don’t identify as a trump supporter). I’m proud of them though for calling out the lies in his chart comparing US tariffs to the other countries’ tariffs.
The top comment on their post about it correctly points this out.
They will have to wait until somebody can put a positive spin on this and team then why it’s a good thing.
They are scared for now
Don’t believe the ‘Republicans panic’ headlines or the Leopards anecdotes – in general they love this shit and they’re still supportive of him.
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2024/nov/26/trump-tariffs-prices-harris-poll
>The majority of Democrats (79%), independents (68%) and Republicans (59%) all believe that tariffs will increase the prices of the goods they pay for in the US.
and
>Though tariffs appear to be more popular among Republicans, just 51% of Republicans said tariffs will have a positive impact on the economy – 27% of independents and 20% of Democrats thought the same.
Shouldn’t you ask this in r/askaconservative ?
My trump loving “friends” are: A) trying to ignore the situation as best they can, B) making light of the situation and cracking jokes when they can’t ignore it, and C) doing mental gymnastics to justify how the plummeting stock market is actually a good thing for their investment portfolios.
In other words, ignore, downplay, cope.
Every Trumper I’ve heard talk about them claim that tariffs won’t increase costs, affect supply chains or cost jobs like “the so called experts say.” These are the same people who scream that upping the minimum wage will increase cost of business “a Big Mac will be $25!” It’s like they’re a walking continuity error.
They say he has a plan. I’m not even kidding. A woman in the grocery store yesterday was talking about how much more expensive things had gotten in one day and how it will get worse, “but he has a plan.” She said it like three times. It blew my mind.
In my anecdotal experience most of them are simply clueless about what’s going on rn, which is true for plenty of non-Trump voters too, but there are true believers here and there. Right now, they seem to be split into two camps. One is made up of people coping, they assumed the tariffs were a negotiating tool and they’re having a hard time accepting that he’s actually gonna follow through with it. The other group has this absurd fantasy that this is going to force us to transition to American manufacturing, apparently ignorant to the fact that manufacturing still needs raw materials from abroad.
You know the saying pot committed? They’re too far up their @ to start questioning the supreme leader.
The most common response I’ve seen is “Let’s see how this plays out. At least it’s better than what Biden was doing/what Harris would have done.”
Of course if you press them on what exactly Biden/Harris was doing that was so horrible that this was better, they don’t have an answer beyond “illegals” that they’ve never interacted with in any way.
