Tariffs are a razor. A surgeon’s scapal that has to be used carefully. It requires planning and a set goal in specific use cases. Tariffs are not hammers. No, it will not work.
Work out for them? It’s going to ruin many folks lives, but for the administration, that’s ok because he doesn’t care about people, he cares about himself, money, and corporations. Beyond that, this is how wars begin. He just wants to stir shit up so he gets the attention he feels he deserves. EVERYTHING IS GOING TO GET MORE EXPENSIVE, and fast.
Horrible idea. The only people it will work for are the ones who have stockpiled money in cash/money market accounts waiting to deploy it after the market tanks, and the Democratic party in the 2026/2028 elections. There will be widespread harm to the general public otherwise.
I mean, sure they might get some production moved to the states but that doesn’t really solve anything. The products produced in the States will be more costly per product than say India, Pakistans or India. So how will they handle the increase of price towards the consumer? If it´s expensive no one will buy and, well, then it fails.
What do I think? I am watching a combination of Risk and Sid Meyer’s Civilization happening before my very eyes and the pause button is broken. Will it work out? Let’s wait and see.
It will be a resounding success. My sole criteria for determining the success of a policy is the amount of words that it will generate in future history books. I suspect there will be pages for this one, along with pictures of the consequences, where students are asked to compare Hoovervilles and Trumptowns, and sections where it talks about the difficulty of translating Trump speeches into English.
It is also possible there will be textbooks explaining how Biden ruined the economy by imposing tariffs
Trump tariffs seem to be aimed at increasing home grown production. When US manufacturers spent decades outsourcing their own manufacturing/procurement lines due to lower costs, there is no greater incentive to move thx manufacturing back than tariffs. Unfortunately, the manufacturers products are only more expensive in the US market and they remain the same price elsewhere…
If Trump wanted the tariffs to work, they should be calculated separately for different product lines.
Tariffs brought on the 1930 depression. Besides that, the tariffs are so well aimed that he tariffed an Antartica island which only has penguins and seals as occupants… so yeah,, well thought out.
He also accused New Zealand of having tariffed the US 20%. He got this figure using our GST, which is a sales tax, paid for by the customer, and not charged to the country of origin..
New Zealand has had minimum tariffs (about 2%) and no subsidies since the early 2000’s
Trump is an uneducated fuckwit as stated by his economics professor in college
If your best friend screws you, will it work? You will be more cautious about working with him. Canada did the right thing, screw him back. That’s the only right way to reply such people. Now, the sucker is thinking twice. Boycott US products.
They are trying to ruin and destroy the country, so yes they will work out for them. A lot of little people and businesses will get bankrupt so the rich 1% can cheap buy up their properties.
Hyperinflation…it will hurt everyone but the rich. This is probably the worst thing possible (aside from starting a War, which is probably next), he could’ve done in this period of rebuilding after covid.
These tariffs are bound to create a world-wide economic crisis. There is no scenario in which these could turn out to be advantageous for the US and its citizens. How much of a crisis is hard to see but trade wars have in common with real wars that everyone involved loses big time.
This is literally the reason so many in the US refuse to give up their arms. But where are they now? Guess it was just all talk all along. Biiiiig surprise.
I it probably will work out for them. The Trump administration has made it no secret they are trying to cause a recession, I assume the reason they want that is so that they can buy up all the assets during the recession so that they are even wealthier by the time things start to bounce back.
And yknow what, I think it may work out for them. Who knows how much suffering and death will be caused by it. I hope the people can and will rise up to stop it. But at least right now at 3:00am I’m feeling pessimistic and I fear it will work out for them.
It’s going to plunge the world economy into a recession, in which the oligarchs will buy up even more wealth at a discount price, whilst the common people suffer immense hardship.
If brexit has taught me anything its that things are resilient. Things will be a little shitier for most people, catastrophic for a few but overall life will go on and this farce will be the new normal. Don’t expect the American right to look at all the shit in their bed and go “duhh maybe this wasn’t such a good idea” Any plan that relies on them seeing the light is doomed to fail. Also remember this will hurt non Americans more than american in the short term.
Just to give an example of how tariffs worked under Trump’s first presidency, the government had to pay $28 billion to compensate American farmers growing soya beans for China, who imposed reciprocal tariffs.
Any revenue generated by tariffs is offset by lost growth and compensation schemes.
Drumpf is the epitome of an idiot. He doesn’t actually understand what a tariff is or how it works. He thinks it means other countries pay USA more money to import goods and that’s it.
What he doesn’t understand, since he’s a shit businessman (come on, who else bankrupts a casino?), is that the importing country just raises their prices to cover the tariff, making said goods only more expensive for people buying it in the states.
It will harm some parts of our economy while improving others. In area of manufacturing it will create a boom in jobs but it will increase costs in others. I’m going to wait and see but I think it’s being overblown by the media.
The end result of stuff being made in America will have to mean 2 things.
The price of that stuff will have to go up, by a lot.
The wages employee’s make will have to go down.
One of the main reasons stuff is made in Mexico or China is because the labor is cheap as hell and the material cost is cheap as hell. And that’s easy to do when 5 cents an hour makes you middle class.
Define “work out”.
Tariffs will hurt the countries Trump imposes them in, due to diminished sales, but they will also hurt Americans due to higher prices.
If you gambled that the stock market and dollar would take a dive, you probably made a lot of money.
At this point I’m beginning to wonder if Trump’s financial policies aren’t completely aimed at manipulating the stock market to make money for his oligarch pals.
Many services we simply can’t do here or pay people enough to do it. So those will disappear.
Countries will effectively sanction us and we will no longer be able to have friendly discourse with any nation with it being about tariffs.
Putin didn’t get tariffs and Zelensky did. So when Zelendky goes groveling for a deal, we will make Putin look like a class act and the best ally man cloud have.
If this works it will have worked on contradiction to every piece of attained economic wisdom we have as a culture.
Is there an argument to be made that targeted, thoughtful tariffs could have improved the domestic economy while simultaneously punishing or enemies? I think so. That’s not what he’s doing. He went for the nuclear option when it wasn’t even called for.
Nope. It will be an epic fail. While confident it will make money for the top 5%, for most everyone else it means loss and deprivation in many different ways.
We all know this is just Trump continuing to spread false narratives to match the hate and lies he spouts daily. Ultimately he is doing everything possible to continue to divide so he and his like can tighten their grip on power.
It’s a matter of when, not if, he will remove most of the tarrifs and claim victory while blaming the Democrats and the wider world for the inevitable recession that is now so close to hand.
Still, at least the Russians were spared the impact of Liberation Day.
If the goal is ramping up manufacturing in this country, it is an uphill battle and probably not a 100% realistic goal. But this is what is happening, so let’s see.
It really sucks to have to be an American right now. To have about half the population actively cheering on this nonsense just enhances the flavor of despair.
In Trump’s case, it’s the people backing him. It’s only the opponents of Trump doing the fact checking, not the supporters and they do not care. Gish galopping his way for forward, by the time someone has debunked something, his goal is already achieved: emotionally triggered supporters. And he keeps the narrative simple: broad without any nuances, easily repeatable.
It doesn’t matter that other countries are going tit for tat: he escalated “to show who’s boss”. Retaliatory tarifs? He calls it ‘reciprocal tarifs’ in turn, spinning the narrative to: they started, see, they are unreasonable and we are not going to stand for that any longer!
Reasonably, you know (business owners, importers) that yes the tarifs make it harder for other countries to sell, but… it’s mainly because down the line the American consumer has to pay a lot more for these products. And they bought these porducts because they were generally cheaper than american made (or made with american resources!) products.
The benefits as Trump is describing (MAGA, other countries will invest in US or move factories over, creating jobs) might be somewhat true… over a decade. But the direct result? Product costs are going to be way higher, inflation, job loss, people going hungry.
But that’s not the point of his story: Countries retaliating, and him escalating the tarifs in the eyes of his backers, it looks strong AND he was right, they are trying to break us! The numbers on his board being made up in relation to what “they do to us”: doesn’t matter.
And when inevitably and finally the crowd sours as day to day lives are in freefall, he’ll reverse the tarifs and say “We negotiated finally fair tarifs, and they were only at the table because they were affraid for how we acted, and we acted strong.”.
It’s not about facts and common sense. It’s about emotion and rallying against “the rest of the world who treated us poorly and unjustly”. And for that: the tarifs work just fine.
The ending already seems apparently, at least to some of us.
Whether the orange shit is doing it to tank the economy so his billionaire masters can buy everything up at discount sale prices or because he’s just going on another narcissistic rampage against a world that slighted him, the average American will inevitably be the ones footing the bill.
The only real question there is how big the bill is gonna be, and that, depends entirely on the aforementioned “average American”. Because let’s face it, no one in the millionaire, billionaire or even political class is gonna do anything to stop him.
Y’know, I can’t help but think that if Trump had actually had his second term the first time around, most of the insane bullshit we’re seeing wouldn’t be happening because the pieces wouldn’t be in place, and he wouldn’t have had a platform or cultist-base for any future terms.
Pop the boil before it got so big and nasty, so to speak.
You know those charts showing Military budget for USA is a lot more than other countries put together? Well imagine the person who you were using for protection decided he wants things from you. In the UK I think the need to rely on US for defence is definitely a flawed plan.
The insanity is so pure its fascinating. Nothing good will come out of them. US purchasing power will decline.
The only plus side is that it has united so many countries in the EU and Asia, which is sorta historical.
Either it will all dissolve when countertariffs come in or Trump will slowly start making an even lower income class into the US making poverty worse, but getting part of the production back, trapping these poor ppl into factories developing country style. But I doubt it will happen. A destabilized USA is more likely. Protests, class warfare, maybe even violence. Sad.
Some people’s life and businesses will be destroyed. In the US and abroad but for most it will be just a little worse.
But the question is, will it work? Seems to be the goal of the tariffs is to lower trade deficits as the numbers that went into those tariffs are the 2024 trade deficits.
Will those tariffs bring down the trade deficit? Maybe? Americans will buy less imported goods and more domestic goods. (Bread instead of rice). Or hold off on purchases (drive the car a bit longer).
On the other hand there will be reciprocal tariffs from many countries so exports will go down.
It might bring down the trade deficit, but with very little benefit to the average American (who will bear the cost). Domestic manufacturing companies may benefit, especially those that add a lot of value to raw materials. Like the Pharma industry who’ll just increase margins.
We aren’t economists. We are especially not economists with an unbiased opinion. Most people commenting here are 22 year olds with no life experience, historical knowledge, or any reasoning outside of what their preferred media tells them.
This is true of those for or against these tariffs.
I wouldn’t take anything here as accurate. I also wouldn’t completely write them off.
We will see, I guess. But this is not the place to learn anything. This is a place almost solely to vent your frustrations about the politician you’ve been calling Hitler or a nazi for 8 years being president.
As an outside observer (who will also be impacted) they’re a terrible idea
There have been very few occasions in history when Republicans have controlled all branches of the US government and few occasions when they have added large tariffs on imports
One time you had both was the great depression
Your economy is going the wrong way, Tax the top, feed the bottom. That works.
You’re feeding the top and taxing the bottom, it’ll topple over soon enough
The world has to decide that tariffs are bad or good. I can see Usa upping the tarrifs to reciprocal basis . If they have been charged tarrifs / import duties and they have willingly agreed to that and infact importing with zero tarrifs or low as compared . So negotiate and reduce tarrifs on usa goods . China will suffer the most so they will not be in a position to import themselves.
No, of course not. When applied to this extent it tanks economies, because consumers foot the bill and SME’s downsize or exit the market. It’s fairly basic stuff. The only people that will come out better are those that had capital and were positioned for the changes.
Trump can only solve problems by creating them first. Hence us being here on a daily diet of chaos and shit.
The US dollar is going to 0 regardless, but this will yeet us there a lot faster.
BitcoinFixesThis
I went from being a tiny bit into BTC, to BTC making up the largest part of my investment portfolio, because it went up so much. I sold and diversified and with the current macro economic climate I am once again a BTC maximalist.
I keep ~150k in fiat around (company holdings, emergency savings, liquid assets).
Well, obviously no. Because now just about everyone will do counter tariffs on US as a response or mitigate it so US is only hurting itself.
Even if you as CHATGPT, it will tell you this will probably just backfire on the US. The likelihood this benefits the US long term is also pretty low. It may bolster some markets, but the cost will outweigh those benefits.
And if I were you, I would be paying very close to exactly what kind of businesses wil benefit from this. Someone always does. And then see if there are any connection to Trump.
It will work out very well for the rich. Crash the economy, tank the share prices, buy everything cheap, reverse some of the changes to get the economy back on track. It’s a transfer of wealth tactic.
I think it’s all a big bluff. A negotiation tactic. I think he’s trying to look tough so that he can ease up later on and look like he’s doing countries a favour. I think it will backfire.
He said his goal with the tariffs is that foreign companies and manufacturers move their HQ to the US, especially car manufacturers, so that they are excepted from the tariffs.
That’s not how it works. Firstly, I doubt any manufacturers would seriously throw away the free world market, just to sell in the US without tariffs. Secondly, even IF they would move, all the parts will still be manufactured in other countries, so the tariffs will still apply on those.
He is totally delusional and de-railed from reality. He is the type of toddler that cries until it gets its treat. I guess that comparison mighve been insulting to toddlers, sorry.
A few very rich people want to buy America for cheap. And that is arguably the best way to do it. If you are rich and prepared for recession its the best thing that can happen to you.
Why is politics now about everyone’s opinion about it. There are experts. Experts say it is stupid and will cause a recession. And the fact that he isn’t even using real figures….
I believe the administration is effectively taxing the American population through tariffs, presenting it as a measure against foreign nations. These broad tariffs operate like a hidden federal consumption tax, VAT-ish.
Although many tariffs are symbolic, the real economic target remains China.
Politically, this strategy allows the administration to address fiscal deficits and domestic economic weakness without openly advocating unpopular direct taxes or handouts to subsidize domestic production.
Ultimately, these tariffs works regressively, disproportionately impacting lower and middle-income households.. maybee to offset the hole left by Trump taxcuts.
Aussie chiming in to say that the news coverage here has taken a tone of quietly mocking this. Like, I just heard a radio interview with someone from the beef industry saying, paraphrase, “er, we don’t know the exact impact yet but we don’t think it’s going to be a major one”.
Actually we’re still kind of trying to work out why Trump put 10% tariffs on Australia except for Norfolk Island, which gets 29%. Never heard of Norfolk Island? Don’t blame ya, not much happens there. Tiny little place out in the Pacific, not sure it even exports anything. We asked the White House why Norfolk gets 29% tariffs and the answer has been… no answer. They don’t know.
You guys feeling good about your POTUS right now? You doing OK?

Read the room, these are going to be a disaster for almost everyone.
Watch as the USA comes begging back to the international community after the next election, and the rest of the world says “no thanks”.
Tariffs are a razor. A surgeon’s scapal that has to be used carefully. It requires planning and a set goal in specific use cases. Tariffs are not hammers. No, it will not work.
I think tariffs have merit but trump is throwing them around haphazardly and without any real direction. That is a recipe for disaster.
It will make a great anecdote for historians on how to tank an economy for at least a decade.
Horrible idea. The only people it will work for are the ones who have stockpiled money in cash/money market accounts waiting to deploy it after the market tanks, and the Democratic party in the 2026/2028 elections. There will be widespread harm to the general public otherwise.
In Oz we have two uninhabited (except for penguins etc.) islands, not sure how they feel about it, they’ve been suspiciously quiet about it…
It will work out for the billionaires that decided to do it. Everyone else is getting fucked.
I mean, sure they might get some production moved to the states but that doesn’t really solve anything. Will what work out for them? He hasn’t even set a goal with these tariffs, there’s no success state for them to achieve.
As a small business I’m absolutely fucked
The last time the U.S. did this their exports dropped by 2/3s in a year.
The last 2 times the US use Tarifs, in 1828 and 1930, it lead to a depression, why it would be different this time ? Because it’s Trump ?
Uninhabited islands have met their match 😤
Ronald Reagan didn’t think they would
It will be a resounding success. My sole criteria for determining the success of a policy is the amount of words that it will generate in future history books. I’m looking forward to working in a new factory that’s going to be built. Can’t wait to sit by that conveyor belt.

He set tariffs on all of our allies but not on Russia and North Korea. Does that give you a warm hopeful feeling for things to come?

might just be distractions, Tariffs on imported cars? Which one?
Just take a ride thru Al, Ms. KY, TN, GA, Mercedes, VW, Hyundai, Honda, Toyota, and and, and, all manufactured in the good ol USA.
This is just pure chaos

Yes. I mean it’ll be catastrophic, but Trump will just blame someone else, like Biden and America will just accept it
It’s been proven… tariffs are like communism… on paper they look and sound good… put them to practice and it doesn’t work…

What happened with eggs, will happen with most things in America.
Yes. It will cause harm to people who aren’t filthy rich, which is the only goal of Republicans outside of making themselves more wealth.
Maybe in 10 years? but the regular people in the US and in the rest of the world will not fare well and recent the Americans for the next 50.

Global depression to dwarf the Great Depression is incoming, why?
So that Trump and his rich cronies can buy up stocks at rock bottom prices, then he’ll cancel the tariffs and make pay-dirt.
Except it doesn’t work like that as they’ll find out.
No. Hubris is the ultimate downfall.
The world economy will simply flow around the US as they become ever more isolated.
No one wants to do serious business with a ketamine addict.

“It’s a bold strategy, Cotton. Let’s see if it pays off for him.”
We had the best economy in the world under Biden and now we don’t in 3 months.
The man killed casinos. Wake the 🦆 up conservatives and people that think we are going to be okay without some kind of action.
People are being disappeared without due process. This is Ba Sing Se type shit.
Everything else goes into self-custody BTC.
Work out as in funnel money to a select few while devastating most of its citizens and doing permanent damage to their economy? Yeah.
so america making isolationist state, then that’s a recipe making USD ditch by most nation either replacing with euros or bitcoin
It’s okay, apparently he’s going to make up for them by dropping sanctions and doing a huge trade deal with Russia.
I think it’s all a big bluff. A negotiation tactic. I think he’s trying to look tough so that he can ease up later on and look like he’s doing countries a favour. I think it will backfire.
No of course not. There’s no rational or evidence for them ‘working’.
They will crash the stock market for a while, Trump will walk back from them and then the stock will go back up.
Then he’ll find another crazy scheme.
They didn’t work out last time he was in power, what makes people think this time will be any different?
Will it work out. No
Aussie chiming in to say that the news coverage here has taken a tone of quietly mocking this.
What is weird is the tariffs from his first term were left in place under Biden.
It don’t matter. Y’all still going to work on Monday
