What do you think of allegations against AG Letitia James?

r/

Federal Housing Finance Agency, which regulates Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, has referred AG James to DOJ for potential criminal prosecution, alleging that she committed mortgage fraud, which could send her for years in federal prison. Do you think it is just revenge by Trump and Bondi or that she likely committed crimes?

Considering it’s Donald Trump and Pam Bondi. I think it is safe for intelligent, moral and honest people to assume it is a lie and ignore it until a preponderance of good faith actors with knowledge say it might be true.

It is entirely possible she did something wrong. It is entirely possible she did something wrong by accident in a manner that lots of people do and no one would actually get prosecuted for unless it was very special circumstances like being a well-known target of Donald Trump’s wrath.

But I don’t care. A criminal rapist insurrectionist leading a government filled with criminals and rapists and insurrectionists should not be afforded anything other than contempt and an assumption of lies.

I think both things can be true – same as the prosecution of Trump.

It’s a no brainer that Trump is directing the government levers to take revenge, that’s a given. It’s going to cause a lot of petty prosecution. Here’s the thing – If I had to choose between this scenario and never prosecuting powerful people, I’d go with petty revenge using the judicial system. I know that’s easy for me to say because it won’t be my neck on the line.

Let’s be clear, I don’t think it’s a good thing or a trivial thing. It’s reprehensible IMO. However, refusing to prosecute powerful people is more reprehensible and causes much more lasting damage. Nixon should never have been pardoned, for instance. So yeah, I expect that a lot of people are going to go through legal hell to satisfy Trump’s lust for revenge. They will find the things that most people wouldn’t be prosecuted for, but that Trump will throw the book at them. It sucks, but if they did do the thing and it can be proven in court, then they should take the punishment. I hope that judicial and jury discretion will be used to create fair outcomes.

In general I have faith in the legal system to get it right. I don’t expect it will be perfect, but on the whole, it’s going to get it right much more often than not.

At this point the default assumption should be that if Trump accuses someone of a crime, they’re most likely innocent and Trump himself has probably committed that crime x 100.

  5. willowdove01 Avatar

I think it’s pretty clear this is petty revenged above all else. I doubt it’s even true

  6. srv340mike Avatar

Because Trump’s involved I default to the assumption it’s all fake. That’s the consequence of Trump’s behavior and selfishness – you assume everything he does is either selfish or aggrandizing in nature.

Should a sufficient number of good faith, reliable sources come out and say there’s a problem I am happy to change my mind as accountability is important, but I do not trust the President in the slightest.

  7. DeusLatis Avatar

I would have to wait to see the evidence or if this gets passed a grand jury. I mean its certainly not impossible that Trump’s enemies also commit crimes, but lets just say given the current climate my default position is one of high skepticism

  8. letusnottalkfalsely Avatar

I have no idea. I’d have to see evidence of the crime.

  9. engadine_maccas1997 Avatar

Will wait to see what the evidence is if/when there’s an indictment. Can’t comment on it otherwise.

Seems legit from what little we know so far there are really 2 aspects. The fraud of a 5 unit to a 4 unit, and the Primary Resident when she couldn’t live there. For the 1st, no way she can do that on her own. She’d need the appraiser, possibly the lender/loan officer to forge or “tweak” the property type. What the public records show isn’t always accurate and the title will typically take what the appraiser says over a title report/public record. So the 4-5 unit issue may be a big nothing burger. The “Primary Residence”, eh..yeah I think she is cooked on that one. Granted by it’s itself I don’t think it will be a huge item, but it will devastate her career as she would’ve been an illegitimate DA, ethics violations, etc. Will she see jail?…IDK hard to say, but this will sting and possibly end her. MAGA will point out she is be accused of what she prosecuted Trump for…and they are correct, whether she is guilty we’ll see what the evidence says.

I suspect it is just vengeance. I won’t pay attention to this until it results in a trial.

  12. Eric848448 Avatar

I think this means that Donald Trump is likely guilty of mortgage fraud.

  13. WeenisPeiner Avatar

We’ll see if Letitia James ends up on a plane to El Salvador before anything is brought to trial.

  14. Orbital2 Avatar

No idea if she actually did it. I don’t personally know her.

I’ve already seen conservatives running wild with their typical stupidity. Reposting quotes from her “nobody is above the law” etc

It all misses the point entirely. If she broke the law she should be punished appropriately. The problem is Donald Trump is a convicted felon who in practice has faced no consequences for that conviction. If Letitia gets prosecuted, convicted, ends up removed from office etc it only reinforces the points about two tiered justice systems and the law only being applicable to certain people. SHE might not be above the law but Trump still is.

Having a functioning country requires having fair legal SYSTEMS. It’s not about the individuals

Every accusation is a confession from the right.

  16. gordonf23 Avatar

I have no way of knowing, although we do know that the current Republican regime has been openly using such things for vengeance and punishment of those it sees as its political rivals and enemies. This fruit is rotting from the top, and that’s the first and most important issue to be addressed.

    Good morning,

Welcome to “Whose law is it anyways” the America where everything is made up and the rules don’t matter.

  18. LibraProtocol Avatar

I think 2 things can be true at once.

I think the only reason this was looked into WAS for revenge.

Conversely, the evidence regarding her claiming state of residence is pretty cut and dry. She claimed on the document for the purchasing of the home that Virginia would be her “principle residence” and NY law makes is VERY clear that officeholders MUST reside within their territorial limits or the office will be considered Vacant.

As for the “4-room or 5 room” property that I can see being grey as I do not know how each of them are defining “rooms” and could be potentially a mis interpretation, but the principal residence issue DOES seem pretty cut and dry.

  19. ramencents Avatar

    I’ll wait for the indictment.

  20. Old_Palpitation_6535 Avatar

I work from the assumption that at least 3/4 of what Trump says is a lie, which seems to be about right. And Bondi has made clear she will do whatever he says, no question.

So I feel comfortable assuming this is false and purely revenge, at least until someone trustworthy reports on it and shows us there’s some truth to it.

  21. mr_miggs Avatar

If there is evidence of fraud, then sure she should be prosecuted. I’m guessing she is being targeted for political reasons, but would be interested to see what evidence there is.

  22. headcodered Avatar

Trump himself said over and over again he was planning revenge on all these people. Now that he is openly and directly forcing the DOJ to do his bidding when it comes to targeting political enemies- something that previous presidents have never done in any provable way- we can certainly take these things with a grain of salt. If there’s sufficient evidence and a grand jury decides there’s a case, I guess let it proceed, but I doubt we’ll see that happen.

  23. CTR555 Avatar

This is the basic reason why people like Donald Trump shouldn’t be anywhere near the federal government. It’s entirely possible that she did commit fraud, but the referral has no bearing on that because the people who’re currently running the federal government are bad actors who’ve clearly shown that they support using the government to attack their opponents.

  24. SomeSugondeseGuy Avatar

Trump denies basic facts. It is reasonable to assume he is lying until proven otherwise.

  25. tonydiethelm Avatar

If she committed Mortgage Fraud, there should be plenty of black and white paperwork evidence. Let’s see it!

Righties have a habit of making big accusations without evidence then quietly retracting their statements later when no one is looking. This made big news and it’s just a referral to the DOJ. The DOJ might just dump it in the trash but the damage to her reputation will have been done.

I try to have facts, THEN form my opinions. So, we’ll wait for the facts!

But Trump’s a lying liar with a history of lying and taking petty revenge, so that’s what I’m biased toward believing… But I recognize that and we’ll see!

  26. KingBlackFrost Avatar

It’s just revenge by Trump’s DOJ. I’m going to ignore all accusations by Republicans until they prove to be credible again. Been doing that since January 6th, 2021.

  27. loveaddictblissfool Avatar

I think they’re not gonna stop. I think they’re gonna purge all competing parties and ideologies, starting with the Democratic Party. and they’re starting now. I think we need to understand that this is a totalitarianism and it requires the destruction of the culture so that in two generations nobody remembers what democracy was.

  28. loveaddictblissfool Avatar

The list is of who the purge is going to include everyone from Obama to Gavin Newsom to Bernie Sanders, AOC, everyone on the J6 committee definitely, Kamala, Adam Schiff, every D senator, and ultimately anyone who doesn’t join the party and swear allegiance to Trump. I find it unbelievable that there will be legitimate election with a legitimate outcome and anybody from the D party taking office. Why would they let the opposition continue now that they have absolute power and a monopoly on violent force?

  29. 2dank4normies Avatar

Trump said he’s going to be going after his enemies. So it’s not a matter of opinion whether or not this is retribution.

  30. ActualTexan Avatar

It appears the current administration is actually engaging in the kind of weaponization of government they spent years pretending the Biden administration was engaging in

  31. rustyshackleford7879 Avatar

I am more interested in what conservatives think. If this was a witch hunt like conservatives say with Trump and he is innocent then she is innocent right

  32. Oceanbreeze871 Avatar

It’s part of trumps revenge tour.

  33. Delanorix Avatar

Honestly? I wish she was gone. Shes part of the problem with the Democratic party, IMO: all flash and no substance.

NYS has some really shitty leaders that have egos so big they putting themselves in front of the party and media like were supposed to just love them.

Thomas DiNapoli, the NYS Comptroller, is basically the only high level guy I think isnt in some huge corrupted circle.

  34. ThePensiveE Avatar

    100% revenge.

If they can present evidence to a jury and convince them that she committed a crime beyond a reasonable doubt, the new DOJ clowns are welcome to try.

  35. Kerplonk Avatar

Regardless of if she has actually committed a crime, I’m 99% sure this is an act of revenge.

I think it is also a long term trend of Republicans even before Trump of making up false accusations against people so there’s a good chance no crime has been committed.

If she has actually committed a crime I think the proper response is not to try and shield her from consequences but to advocate that the law is more universally enforced or change the law depending upon the validity of said law.

  36. bazilbt Avatar

No idea. I haven’t seen the evidence and I don’t know the details. However the Trump administration with their recent activities don’t make me believe that they care at all about law. So I would take anything they say with a massive grain of salt.

  37. willpower069 Avatar

Such a coincidence that the AG Trump dislikes is being targeted.

If this leads to nothing expect conservatives to pretend it never happened.
