The only thing that Donald Trump and Putin have in common is they both object to Bretton Woods international global order imposed by the United States after being the only country left standing after the second World war.
It’s the Europeans that whored themselves to Putin’s Russia and not Trump. Trump warned Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany to stop buying Russian oil and gas. Did anyone in Europe listen? Absolutely not. Without the money Europe provided Russia in buying natural resources Putin could never have attempted to fulfill his dream of restoring the Soviet empire. As of today there is really nothing that the United States buys from Russia. The few American companies that set up business in Russia don’t have to be tariffed because of already existing sanctions. I guarantee you that once the war in Ukraine settles one Way or another the Europeans are going to go back to buying every natural resource they can from Russia including rebuilding pipelines.
A). We don’t import goods from Russia B) we are currently negotiating an end to a fucking war. Why would we impose any new sanctions at all on them if we’re trying to negotiate in good faith?
So ignoring the obvious answer, presumably the U.S. does not actually have a trade deficit with Russia considering all the sanctions so it kind of seems moot.
my working theory is trump wants peace so badly to save face with American voters that he gave Russia a free pass so that they will agree to peace as soon as possible
I mentioned this to a coworker who said we already have an embargo against Russia and North Korea. So it wouldn’t make sense to add tariffs, since we didn’t but anything from them anyway
As long as sanctions are still in place that’s fine since tarrifing zero trade is pointless. But if sanctions are lifted they should be replaced with tarrifs.

Russia is getting far worse than tariffs. They are being sanctioned within an inch of their lives.
Trump and his cronies literally took net exports and their percentages and halved it for tariffs.Like why?

Russia is allready under sanctions, very harsh ones. That’s why Russia, Iran, and north Korea didn’t get tariffs.
There’s no TRADE with Russia, sanctions were imposed in March of 2022.
Since then there’s been no trade hence there’s no tariffs on Russia!
