I’m an atheist but I’m still going to say it. God bless her and give her strength.
I’m so scared for her because a lot of these people are so evil and twisted that they might decide to set her up to be raped and find a way to twist it or hide it.
She has the right idea, but it needs a few thousand more people to make a difference.
>What do you think of this woman’s act of civil disobedience in Florida?
This is a good moment to remember Claudette Colvin. If you are unfamiliar, Colvin was Rosa Parks before Rosa Parks. Parks was enlisted to recreate Colvin’s act of civil disobedience because she made for a better symbol of the movement.
If there is an equivalent ‘better strategy’ I think this might be it. Trans men, who pass as cis men, being seen as complying with the law no matter how much it bothers people.
That is what I’d recommend instead.
Unhelpful.
I respect her so much, everyone complicit in sending her to jail and a men’s one is evil
Well, I personally am way too much of a coward to make a choice like that (to be clear, the choice of knowingly breaking a law and advertising it to law enforcement), and I’d probably advise anyone against it, but sending her to prison, much less a men’s prison, just seems absolutely ridiculous, disproportionate, and frankly negligent.
> She’s a devout Catholic who describes herself as a political centrist, with an appreciation for “family values”
Why
If she went in the men’s room they’d call the cops on her too.
Rosa Parks would be proud.
I think that it was a poorly thought out approach that represents a fundamentally naive approach to politics, but I respect her courage to go through with it and I desperately hope that she’s okay.
She’s pretty clearly setting herself up as the perfect victim for if this goes to court. That is pretty cool and I hope things go well for her and with the upcoming court case on whether bathroom bans are constitutional.
Firstly, I think that it is incredibly admirable.
As for effectiveness. I think that she has the right idea, but she made a mistake doing this on her own vs working with some sort of activist group. I googled this story and it’s only being covered by Florida based news organizations (and LBGT specific publications). You aren’t going to change politicians minds if your actions aren’t been seen by their voters. I do think that people seeing her and hearing about what is happening to her would be more likely to make them sympathetic to her position/opposed to the current status quo. I just worry not many people are going to become aware of her actions. I think if other people who were similarly as attractive as she is followed suit it would drum up additional publicity, but that if anyone who wasn’t passing tried it they would very quickly find themselves as the face of the movement and end up doing more harm than good. As someone else mentioned transmen going into women’s bathrooms would also be an effective strategy, following the law in a way that made people uncomfortable rather than breaking it in a way that made them uncomfortable enforcing it.
Out of curiousity, does anyone know how one might send her a note of encouragement?
