What do you think will be the long-term fallout in the US (politically and socially) from the killing of Charlie Kirk?

    Long-term? You mean this weekend?

  2. isi_ys Avatar

Nothing. There isn’t even a long term fallout when innocent little kids get shot.

  3. thebigbioss Avatar

Two state representatives were shot in the same night, and it was ignored after 1 week.

  4. Voaracious Avatar

    Stronger police state.

Far more people are scared of a civil war than people who want to start one. The Kirk killing throws all their red flags.

More surveillance and pre-emptive measures will follow.

  5. megabestfriend Avatar

It depends on who did it.

  6. THound89 Avatar

I feel it just gives current regime more fuel to occupy big cities with the military “to make sure similar incidents don’t occur again”

  7. lucy_in_disguise Avatar

We barely even talk about Trump’s assassination attempt.
Overall shootings will keep going up through. There was already another school shooting today, those are hardly news anymore.
People are getting more and more agitated.

  8. td192020 Avatar

It’s just going to feed the flame and cause even more problems.

  9. BlueDragon101 Avatar

Dunno. Maybe nothing, maybe accelerant on the fire.

I think it partially depends on the shooter. Please dear god let it be a qanon whack job pissed about Epstein.

  10. Sad-Astronaut-4344 Avatar

Long term basically nothing? Republicans aren’t going to start caring about gun violence. Someone will take his place, trump is going to use it as an excuse to crack down on people harder and eventually he’ll die/lose, and we’ll be back to business as usual unless someone comes in that can actually get congress to get money out of politics.

Short term? Matt Stone and Trey Parker are working their asses off rewriting tonight’s South Park episode.

  11. cold_1366 Avatar

The Evergreen High School shooting happened just a few minutes after Kirk was shot, thats the same school south park writer trey parker attended.

  12. llcucf80 Avatar

I think it will largely depends on the ideology of the perpetrator when we find out who it is. If it’s a left leaning person, expect horrible backlash against liberals. If it’s someone on the right, they’ll be dismissed as “not one of us,” without any changes, any softening of hearts, and it’ll be minimized.

  13. crazycatlady331 Avatar

In recent history, there has not been much of any change after high-profile shootings. At least since the Gabby Giffords shooting (early 2011).

Do I wish action will be taken? Yes. Do I think any will be? No. Same shit, different day.

I’m going to spam this on every civil war thread:

Fellow Americans, pull your head out of your asses and see this for what it is—a concerted effort to make you hate each other.

  15. Specialist-Bag1250 Avatar

A congresswoman was assassinated in Minnesota this June. This is probably just the new normal for now.

  16. amiwitty Avatar

The Irish “Troubles” but throughout the United States.

  17. spoodigity Avatar

I hope I’m wrong, but there’s a lot of impressionable young men that this may push over the edge, and we could see a spike in violence.

I may have disagreed at a fundamental level with him, but I stand by the right of people to speak their mind without fear of violent retribution.

  18. RangerPower777 Avatar

Not sure yet. The only thing I will say is this: the news about Charlie Kirk made me more uneasy about things than a lot of other shootings. I’m not sure what it is specifically about this killing but this is like some calm before the storm situation.

  19. SaulTNNutz Avatar

He will be declared a “free speech martyr” and his death will be used to clamp down on free speech. Tomorrow I expect an announcement about ordering the FBI to investigate “left wing hate speech”

  20. Grin_ Avatar

I think the sad reality is that as things are progressing they way they are, assassinations will become commonplace. Not just politicians either, but corporate leaders and other powerful people will be targeted as well. The GOP seem to think they are above all consequence now, but the reality of it is that US is a country full of guns and people who are fueled by anger. It takes a few dozen high profile assassinations before the people running the country start to think about decency and accountability again.

  21. protomanEXE1995 Avatar

    Here’s what i expect:

    1. Those on the right will be posting about how he was amazing and he will be missed
    2. Those on the left will either double down on the idea that he deserved it or signal that they think this is wrong
    3. There will likely be a debate about gun control that goes nowhere
    4. Society will likely quickly move on to the next news story

edit: somewhere along the line there will be a shooter identified and there will be discourse about that

  22. RancidVagYogurt1776 Avatar

The collective memory span of Americans is like a week,

  23. ScienceDoneRight Avatar

I don’t support Charlie Kirk, but I absolutely do not think political violence should be encouraged… Oncee this starts, people will interpret this as a game of making it even and start killing important people on both sides.

Does anyone else think this is because of social media? Social media has become super polarizing, almost rage inducingly so, in terms of politics and the past couple years tensions have only been rising on both sides.

  24. koolknope Avatar

I already have friends on social media saying this is war, and death to democrats. Notably those same people were all silent when the Minnesota lawmakers were murdered. I fear this is another step towards civil war if the shooter has any left leaning views in the slightest

  25. hi_im_eros Avatar

Nancy Pelosis husband was hospitalized. Folks moved on.

Melissa Hortman was murdered. Folks moved on.

I’m supposed to believe Charlie Kirk’s death is the straw that will break the camels back?

Some folks will type all night, but we all still have work in the morning.

  26. farmboy_au Avatar

The right will push for more authoritarian power calling this an outrage and a political assassination.

The left will ask the right where was their outrage for the Hortman murders or the attack on Paul Pelosi.

Neither party will put forward sensible ideas on how to curb political violence. Nor will they offer to work together to address the problem.

In the end all that will be offered up is “thoughts and prayers”

Same thing that’s happened after thousand of American kids died in school shootings- nothing

  28. Edgar_Allen_Poser Avatar

People are gonna argue about it until the next big shooting and nothing is gonna really change. Like any other shooting in America.

  29. LongjumpingFinish482 Avatar

I saw this and immediately thought of this quote from the movie war machine.

“Let’s say you have ten insurgents. Huh? Now, let’s say you kill two of ’em. Now, how many insurgents do you have left? Hmm? Hmm? Well, you’d say eight, of course. Eight. Right? Right? Wrong! In this scenario, ten minus two equals 20. Let’s say the two insurgents you just killed, uh… each had six friends or brothers or some such, who are hovering on the brink of joining the insurgency. They’re thinking about this insurgency thing. “Looks interesting. But, you know, for one reason or other, not for me.” But… So, then you go and kill their friend. Now you’ve just made up their minds for ’em. Those hovering friends are now full, paid-up members of the enemy. Yeah. And so, in the math of counterinsurgency, ten minus two… equals 20”

I feel like his killing is going to radicalise people and it has turned him in to a right wing martyr

  30. PopeOfDankism Avatar

Invasion of more US cities, scape goating, no epstein files, the usual

  31. roberttheiii Avatar

This seems like an unpopular opinion but I do not want to live in a country where people are murdered for their politics. Including the Hortmans and Mr Kirk.

  32. Cyrussphere Avatar

Well for one thing, no one is talking about the Epstein files as per usual nor that birthday card/art thingy

  33. CeroMiedo182 Avatar

I am disgusted and afraid that my daughter has to grow up in a world where political violence is becoming normalized.

Whether it’s today’s assassination of Charlie Kirk, the murders of Democratic representatives in Minnesota, the attempt to burn down Governor Josh Shapiro’s home with his family inside, the killing of Israeli embassy staff, the attack on Paul Pelosi, the murder of the UnitedHealthcare CEO, or the hundreds of other politically motivated attacks over the last five years, this is flat out unacceptable in any civilized society.

We’ve lost the middle ground. There’s no rationality, no respectful discourse. Each side is so dug in that they no longer see the other as human beings, only as enemies to be mocked, hated, and destroyed.

You can’t raise concerns about the rising cost of healthcare without being called a socialist.

You can’t question runaway government spending taxation or debt without being labeled a greedy capitalist.

You can’t speak out about gun violence without being labeled a liberal sissy that wants to take everyone’s guns away.

You can’t speak about the genocide in Palestine without being called antisemitic.

You can’t question the endless war in Ukraine without being branded a Russian puppet.

On and on it goes. No compromise. No effort to understand. Just labels, insults, and hate.

The truth is, both sides have good ideas. Both sides want a better world. We’ve just forgotten that we are all human beings with families, dreams, and concerns, and that those differences don’t have to divide us. They can come together to build something stronger if we choose to listen.

The anger and vitriol have turned every disagreement into a battlefield where you’re either a Marxist loving Socialist or a Fascist Nazi, nothing in between. With extremists on both sides pushing radical agendas that the common person doesnt want anything to do with.

It’s heartbreaking to see our country in this place. I just hope we can find common ground and sensibility again before it’s too late, because it feels like we’re already teetering on the edge with one foot over line of no return.

  34. ShakspreGrl Avatar

I badly want Democrats to introduce gun control legislation under Charlie Kirk’s name. So the GOP can vote down the “Honor Charlie Kirk” law.
