What does “gringo” mean in your country?

r/

From Venezuela here. To us, gringo is someone not from Venezuela (usually American) regardless of color.

I know some other countries, they specify it being a white American. In your country, what’s the definition?

Someone from the US. White, black, pink, blue with purple dots on, doesn’t matter. From the US? Gringo.

USA. But we say yankee. It sounds like mexicans talking about yankees to us.

    Canadian or American usually.

In the US, white Anglo Americans think when Latinos say gringo they’re only talking about them. They also think “guero” means non-Hispanic white. They don’t get that Mexicans call white Mexicans guero too.

If you watch American movies, especially comedy movies, and the characters go down to Mexico, someone form there talks to the gringos, make note of the subtitles in English. You’d be surprised how much they get wrong.

Foreigners, usually from white-majority NATO countries (Not that most Brazilians know what NATO is, but many Brazilians will not treat Russians or Poles by that term).

I’m one of those who uses gringo even for Paraguayans and Bolivians, but it may not be understood that way.

Gringo is used for people from the United States, but many people also use it with white Europeans, basically out of ignorance because they believe that the language they speak is English (that’s why they would never say gringo to a Spaniard)

Canadian or American. Color doesn’t matter.

In Brazil it’s an interesting case, it can be used to refer to literally any foreigner

  13. breadexpert69 Avatar

White guy that is not latino.

Can be from Canada, USA, Europe, Australia, New Zealand. They are all “gringo”. But Russians are usually “Ruso’s” so its mostly western white people that it applies to.

    Foreigner, mostly

    Nobody uses gringo in Argentina.

It would mean “US american”. But we use yankee (pronouncing it “shanky”) instead.

We use the term to describe North Americans or Europeans. I envy them since they will always have more money ad quality of life than me. I wish WW3 to finally happen so we can rearrange the power scalein the world again.

Foreigners from 1st world countries, especially from english speaking countries like americans, brits, canadians, aussies, etc.

It really varies though. I don’t think a chilean would call an Italian or a Pole a gringo, that’s why I believe is a term mostly used for english speaking foreigners.

Those who are not from Brazil and are not here will not be offended. So much so that many foreigners use the term to create content for Brazilians and such “Gringo amigo” etc.

it’s unusual to hear but I guess it’s interchangeable with yankee, that is, any citizen of the US (regardless of north or south)

  27. ChemicalBonus5853 Avatar

Someone from the USA. It doesn’t matter how he/she looks or heritage.

  28. Tough_Stretch Avatar

Usually someone from the US, though it sometimes is used for anybody from a developed country, especially if they’re white. Like most Latin American nicknames, it can be good-natured if the person being called that is a normal person that the speaker likes, or it can be derogatory if the person is an asshole who represents the “Ugly American Abroad” stereotype.

  29. lonchonazo Avatar

It used to mean a white person with blond hair and light eyes. A phenotype thing. Could be Argentines too, like el gringo Einze.

Nowadays, I’d say most people would answer with “someone from the US”.

Not a very popular term in general. The colloquial term we use for Americans is yanquis.
