What happens to the bodies after a battle in war?

r/

Does the military have designated people to clean up the bodies? Do they just leave them there? Do civilians do it?

If you mean during the current Ukraine / Russia war, well, any number of ways.

In some units, if a team mate goes down, the other members will attempt to recover the body and bring it back to where they are stationed.

In a chaotic ambush, if nobody can get to you, that means you are going to stay laying out for possibly months. By the time someone does get to you, you are just a skeleton because you were exposed to the elements. Unless it is in winter time and you are buried under snow, then you will be preserved much longer as the progress of decomposition slows down dramatically. In the spring and summer months, you’ll be a skeleton within a month or so.

There’s a big chance that you will be eaten by the wild.

Sometimes a unit will go back later to collect bodies. It may be a few days, weeks, or even months. It depends on how active the area is.

There is a civilian unit from Ukraine’s Armed Forces which is tasked specifically with going out and recovering bodies.

In the current conflict, it has been said that if a Ukrainian is killed by a Russian, often, the Russians will booby-trap your body by placing mines underneith. So that when the Ukrainians come along to recover your body, they will move it, and the mine will go off.

Anyone who is outside of Ukraine that came to fight, will be identified by DNA, and then shipped back to their originating country and family who will hold the funeral.

Anyone found dead who lives in Ukraine, will also be identified. They will then be exhamined to determine if any war crimes were committed, and then sent back to their family for final preparation. Usually getting a military funeral.

There are civilians who have reported bodies while out, and they will reach out to the Ukrainian Armed Forces to come collect the body.

Here is an interview with a Canadian veteran who is in a unit in Ukraine, and he explains an ambush him and his team experienced during a reconnaissance mission, and one of his teammates Dalton “Gimli” Medlin died, and they attempted to recover his body. I marked the spot:

He is currently in Ukraine fighting with the civilian unit Chosen Company. They are under Ukraine’s 59th Motorized Brigade.

Here is a news article announcing Gimili’s death:

If people are civilized more often than not people who are hurt are taken from the front line and die in the hospital or from other means. If people die in a combat zone though usually they’re taken away afterwards if they can be. Russia has a habit of leaving their wounded for dead and they become food for dogs.

    Collected and burned.

Vlad on the other hand, speared them on spikes even if they were already dead and put them around his castle to send a message.

Many get buried, unidentified, in mass graves and later exhumed for identification years later
