What if the invasion of V. plot was realised?

r/

So, an ex Argentine president planned an invasion of Venezuela back in 2019, using Colombia, Peru and Brazil to invade them. https://radio.uchile.cl/2022/02/14/en-colaboracion-con-estados-unidos-ex-presidente-argentino-mauricio-macri-se-habria-comprometido-para-invadir-venezuela/

These plans never ended up happening but what would happen if they did?

Probably a quick capitulation of the Venezuelan armed forces, and then years of shitass civil/cartel turf war between organized crime groups and splinters of the army acting as cartels full time.

Regardless of Argentinian collaboration I think it would have been a great effort of USA and with a great effect on local politics to the extent that it would have been politically too expensive for our president to maintain considering we had our big protest in 2020 and he was deeply unpopular.
But considering it succeeded, long term it would need a great deal of institutional, economic and military aid from the US to rebuild and that’s the most uncertain part when almost all countries are in fiscal consolidation after covid and the Russian invasion.

This would be horrible for the region. The political instability, the refugee crisis, the obviously Pinochet-like replacement of Maduro, everything about this spells disaster and thank goodness this didn’t happen.

Before any major conflict like this, we should ask ourselves. What do they stand to gain? the invasion of Panama is the closest that comes to mind, which had the objective of dethroning Noriega, but the real goal was the Panama canal.

I don’t see enough positives and a lot of negatives for this case. If someone wants to create a distraction (looking at you Donald), it would only make sense only if the Republicans get to keep the house and senate in the midterms. In general I think they have little to gain and a lot to lose from this, but this administration is not rational so you never know

Colombia, Peru and Brazil would never have agreed.

As US-bootlicking as they might had looked, Bolsonaro and Duque were sane enough to realize such actions would only bring more instability and chaos to the region

Those plans had the Venezuelan armed forces sitting in their barracks while the South American armies did counterinsurgency against the colectivos (read: torture people).

Since it’s ridiculous to expect the Venezuelan armed forces to let foreign armies ran amok in their own country, the result would be an initial Venezuelan victory and the complete embarassment of all the invaders, which would go through one of their worse military defeats in history.

And no, you can’t change a force sent in to perform COIN (as in, kidnap people out of their homes and torture them) for a fighting force capable of conquering a foreign country in a conventional war.
