What if you lost your job and had to fake your way into a new career?

r/

Obviously, you could do unskilled labor like burger flipping, but I’m talking a job that pays reasonably well and that you have no training or background in. And no getting hired in by family or friends. You MUST fake it.

Which career are you going to try faking your way into?

What do you mean “what if”? It’s somewhat common for people to fake their way through an interview to get a job, then learn how to do the job while on the job. That’s how I got my current job, and I’ve been here for over 20 years so far. I exaggerated my Microsoft Windows knowledge (I was a Novell guy back then) and SQL Server knowledge (some MS Access experience and played around with MySQL a little). But mostly, it was my work with Citrix MetaFrame (I think) that got me hired, but I did very little work with that. And we don’t use it all anymore.

First, pick a career and gather a passable knowledge to be able to do that job. Then lie about having a degree in said field- some jobs will check others wont. Then do that job. This obviously doesn’t work for fields that absolutely require razor sharp retention of knowledge in the field, but you would be surprised how many jobs just require a piece of paper and beyond that the technical skills can be self learned.

What is the “what if” in this situation?

I am self taught in computers and IT. I was a graphic designer.

I got hired to do 80/20 design and IT. Then they fired my managers so it was 0/100.

I’ve never dealt with exchange servers or racks of computers.

I was the IT manager for 3 months and hired my own manager to become the assistant for another couple of years.

Nothing broke that I couldn’t fix during that time. I still am of that spirit: I don’t know if I am bad at something until I try to do it. So far more wins than losses.

Something related to data analysis. I already do that a lot as an engineer.

You are not going to know nothing about how to do a job and pass an interview where interviewer knows about the job. You will get exposed really fast, you need some baseline knowledge to start with.

I’d be fine, I can do Amazon Flex till I find another job that pays the same or better.

Haven’t you done that at least once in your life?

I mean, do it like most professionals: be confident and make strong statements, be aggressive. People cannot tell the difference between confidence and competence. If something goes wrong because of your incompetence, blame it on someone below you, someone weaker, someone quieter.

Look around the leaders you know. At least half of them are idiots, whose only perk is aggression.

Fortunately i have developed so many different skills over the years that there would be no shortage of skilled labor, and great paying jobs i could do.
