When I was around 18 I was sitting in a small town cafe and these two elderly women got my attention and said, “we know this is so random but you are just absolutely gorgeous. Just never have seen anyone look like you and thought we’d stop to let you know.”

It really warmed my heart because I was just sitting and reading a book.

ETA: this was 13 years ago, and is very vivid for me.

Probs when I was 17/18 and a guy a few years older said that I have amazing hips- this is the one I will remember weirdly enough
Or that I have nice feet – got that a few times, strange aswell
But my favorite is when I get compliments about eyes or smile

Two that I talk about all the time.

At a bar with some friends, went to the bathroom, checking myself in the mirror when I not quite drunk but well on her way young woman walks up to the sinks. I can see her looking in my direction so I asked her if she was ok or needed anything. She looked me up and down pretty suggestively and said “they only made one of you huh? I mean look at all that. Someone gets to see you naked” and I blushed so hard. Left me speechless for a second. I laughed, brandished my wedding band and confirmed someone does get to see me naked. We laughed and she bought me a beer. That was like 4 years ago and I remember it fondly.

Second was the same friends on a little beach getaway. We’re like 50 feet from this little family. One kid was a toddler the other was about 10. We would catch him looking over at us occasionally. Like a day later he catches me walking back up the beach to our canopy from the shoreline and introduces himself. He asked my name, I told him, then he asked if I had a boyfriend. I smiled, showed him my ring and said I was married and the look of defeat… his shoulders slumped down and he exhaled. Before he walked off he looked me dead in the eyes and said “I’ll never forget you Brittany” and ran off to his tent. I still remember you too little Jake, I hope you’re doing well.

When I was like 20, a crush said my earrings were really cute.

My site manager said “you are one of the smartest people I know” knowing the kind of people he usually deals with, it was high praise

When I was a junior in high school one of the really handsome and popular football players told me I had gorgeous eyes in English class. I was a weird little outcast so that was certainly a notable exchange.

(and that was over 25 years ago so it’s certainly stuck with me)

I took off my motorcycle helmet, and this man stopped in his tracks and put his hand over his heart. He asked if I had a boyfriend, and I told him I was married. He shook his head and said I was about to make him cry. He took one more look, said damn and walked away.

That I look like I have soft kissable lips and my eye shape. I think those are the things I love and embarrass most about myself

Can’t believe it’s been this long – I’m 35 now but this happened when I was 17. I was a dork with a huge crush on this popular guy in school. He wasn’t only a good looking athlete – he was just a really nice, funny guy.

He sat in front of me, Aaron Samuels style, and would turn around and make “getting to know you” chit chat for a few minutes before the class started. He asked how to pronounce my last name one day. I told him and he smirked and said “Oh, it rhymes with cherry… my favorite fruit.”

At 17, that was the sexiest thing that anyone had ever said to me. My ovaries exploded. I am happily married now to a wonderful man, but whenever I randomly recall this memory, I remember how fun schoolgirl crushes were. 😂

I’m an Australian 52 year old, and when I was in Year 9 I lived in a housing commission home and was obviously very poor and self conscious about it.
We had an African American PE teacher who out of the blue remarked that I was a feminine young lady with class and style. I felt seen and it still sticks with me.
For most of my life since, I’m most complimented on my style and it’s something that I’m quite proud of.
Thanks Mr Miles for seeing what was starting to emerge.

I was talking to Tommy Chong (of legendary comedy duo Cheech and Chong) and he stopped mid-sentence to tell me I was beautiful and he liked my dimple when I smile. At the end of our chat, he shook my friend’s hand and when he shook mine he told me again that I was beautiful. Being told that by one of my celebrity crushes (Chong was so MF FINE back in the day!!!) was one of the highlights of my life.

I mentally reject comments so often, but one that has stuck with me forever was written by my 11th grade English teach (who went on to become a close friend of mine until his death a few years back). He’d helped me through a pretty rough time in my teen years and I’d asked him to write a letter of recommendation for me. He wrote this one line in the letter that stayed with me since: The characteristic that makes her truly unique is her willingness and ability to take responsibility for her own happiness and to make changes in order to get closer to it.

That was the best compliment I have ever received and it became sort of a personal philosophy of mine. Whenever I felt like I had a big decision to make, especially in regard to my happiness or peace, I would reflect on that and feel this responsibility to keep those words true.
