What is ACAB about at its core?

r/

I aligned with the notion of a flawed police force and the need to push for strict ethics and that support for wrongdoing is wrongdoing.

But I also see emotion and expression for violence instead of political tact, and so it makes me wonder: when violence is a political tool, what happens when people can’t separate achieving goals from the feeling of winning? What happens when the lines between politics and violence are blurred to a point where there is no difference between them achieving their goals and then commiting violence for the sake of it?

I believe that cops are complicit or harmful. I do not believe they should all die. I believe they all need to change, but a one size fits all approach doesn’t do it for me.

I am now kind of between two states: not pro cop, but disgusted by what I see as a lack of ethics and tact in ACAB spaces.

In many places, police are little more than a government sanctioned gang. They pick and chose how they uphold the law, and who they are going to enforce the law on. Now, obviously, not ALL cops are evil. But when you’ve spent your entire life in one of these places, where every single day of your life has seen either yourself or loved ones constantly being oppressed and targeted by these tyrannical organizations, it’s easy to see why there’d be a call out for ACAB. The fact that even in the good departments, there’s still a lot of room for improvement doesn’t really help matters.

I’d guess I’d say that at it’s core, it’s about a MASSIVE police reform. For many of those calling for ACAB, maybe even to the degree of complete abolishment of any and all law enforcement. For others still, it’s just a call for the removal and then rebuilding of the system.

Ultimately though, the best path forward is going to be somewhere in the middle, as reform is absolutely needed, but it’s going to be hard going. Dealing with well entrenched institutions is a difficult thing to uproot and reform, but we’ve been making some real good progress over the past few decades. Still a long ways to go, but for the most part, we’re moving in the right direction.

Or at least we were, before the current administration came along and has put their stamp of approval on all sorts of nasty things. But that’s a whole other can of worms.

Cops sign up to enforce laws whether they agree with them or not. Many cops also sign up because they are bully’s at heart and or are racist. While all’cops aren’t bad many are. Some cops aren’t bad isn’t as catchy.

There are always extremists who infiltrate activists circles.

For most people it means as you say that by virture of being part of the system and the network/hive, you are complicit, but adding violence or dehumanizing is another level that extremists bring to the table.

The same thing happening with anti Isreal protests. Overwhelming majority protesting the nation’s policies but a a few extremists try to camouflage their views in with the larger movement, creating confusion.
