What is the best thing you bought for improving the life of a declining parent?

r/

She can barley hold a conversation most days, barely walks with her walker, fine motor skills are awful yet she’s mad if people aren’t around, don’t pay attention or make an effort to talk, her amazon tablet is wonky, etc

Now this is my grandma but I want to help my parents.

I don’t need emotional advice, we’ve read it and heard it all I want practical things that you’ve bought that have made their life even 1% better.

I visit quite frequently and my parents are open to anything but same time they’re pretty exhausted and have almost developed the same closed mindset about her that she feeds them every single day about life in general.

An Amazon tablet is a shit show in my opinion so her complaining about her old one and buying her a new one won’t fix anything.

I said we’d get her an iPad, just way easier to use in my opinion.

Also saw her struggling to charge her phone and Apple Watch the other day. She should have a magnetic charger platform.

These are classic dumb opinions of a young person thinking they can fix a much larger problem I get that, I’m asking for tips and tricks anyways…

When my grandpa was dying of alzheimer’s we got him one of those electronic picture frames that cycles through pictures.

Each one had a description in the corner of who was in the photo and their relation (i.e. Emma + Sam, granddaughters), with some of them having phone numbers so caregivers could call the family member if he was lucid and wanted to talk.

On bad days it did not help, and often made things worse as he became frustrated by his confusion, so it would be put away.

But on the good days he would stare at that thing for hours and would call at all the most inconvenient times.

I really appreciated it as well. I was able to have 2 good conversations with him before he passed which was really nice because the last time I saw him alive (2 days before he passed), he yelled at me and told me he hated me.
