About a year ago my brother’s life fell apart. His wife died while he was in the hospital for a major event related to his diabetes. He lost the ability to walk and had massive cognitive issues related to the medical condition + grief. Even before this he was not terribly focused on the paperwork side of his life. For the purpose of this post he is mostly none communicating.
My brother and his wife adopted 3 children. Two of which are legal adults.
My youngest nephew is 15 and is currently staying with my sister.
My brother’s family was mostly supported by, from an outsiders perspective, an arcane web of social services. There was money coming in from the state for the fosters, the adopted kids got health insurance from the state in… some form?
That is what we are trying to reestablish.
Some other possibly relevant facts.
-
My brother is still technically the Kid’s guardian
-
My sister is in the middle of a messy divorce and had over the last year been the keeper of most of the relevant paperwork. Almost all of It appears to haven been lost in the shuffle.

The nephew, is just about to go to high school and needs to get everything in order to do that.
So how do I get this kid to a doctor, reestablish his Insurance, and get him signed up for high school without officially taking custody?
