What is the correct use of AI in writing research papers?

Using AI in the writing and development of research, what is its proper use? I’ve seen some posts where they mention that AI should not be used for writing research, and I’ve been advised to only use it to paraphrase sentences I’ve already written, while others suggest using it as a source of ideas and to identify potential errors.
