He wanted to simply name me after him altogether, but my mom said no and that was the compromise ig lmao

I was told my name means King. Though there was a King David in the Bible (Second King of Israel and slayer of Goliath), David actually means beloved and it has Hebrew origins.

  3. Carrotcake1988 Avatar

I am named after a well known and well loved woman from my mom’s childhood community.

People outside of that community might find it a weird name for a little girl.

But, I always knew where it came from. I was always taught to be proud of her and to have her name.

  4. Green-Ordinary-3086 Avatar

Just the name of a random classmate, my mom didn’t even talk to them just went “wow that’s a cool name, imma use it now”

  5. WhiskeyTangoFox9trot Avatar

    Two great grandmothers.

  6. Wynfull Avatar

I’m named for my paternal grandmother. First, middle and last so it was weird seeing my full name on a gravestone when she passed away. It was never my favorite name growing up, but now I wouldn’t trade it for the world.

  7. mredcurleyz Avatar

My middle name is my paternal grandma’s maiden name

  12. AppointmentTasty7805 Avatar

My first name came from Lindsey Wagner’s character on the show “The Six Million Dollar Man and The Bionic Woman” and my middle name was a family name. Middle name began with my great aunt, then my mother, then me and now my youngest daughter. She may or may not choose to continue the tradition (I personally don’t just LOVE the name) but I do love the people associated with it.

It’s a family name on my dads side, a semi commonly used name on my moms… yet when naming me my mom thought about how I could share a name with her middle school “bully”

  21. pymreader Avatar

My mom had a completely different name picked out but while she was in labor my dad was in the waiting room watching tv and smoking (you can tell I’m old) and he heard some random name on tv and liked it batter so he wrote it on the birth certificate while my mom was knocked out.

My parents said it means “poet” in Irish. I couldnt really find much that confirmed this. The more common translation I found was “Deer” and “Valley” in Welsh.

  29. ArcticTrek Avatar

I was named after a cowboy in a movie that my mom liked.

  30. PrincessBoobaFett Avatar

I was told I was named after Katherine the Great. In reality my mom had the hots for Ron Perlman and liked how he said Kathryn in Beauty and the Beast. 😂

  31. AsleepProfession1395 Avatar

I don’t know if i’ll ever find out the true origin of my name. I’m Malay and i’ve never found my name anywhere. I did find out that it’s a Balkan origin but i doubt my parents named me after that.

I was the firstborn and my mom insisted on having an “A” name when my paternal grandma suggested an “M”. Mostly it’s my paternal and extended relatives that call me the shortened version of the M name. 4 decades later, my late dad’s side of the family still call me by that. I don’t mind it at all.

Also since Diana was popular at that time, it was incorporated into something that starts with A. The M name was also incorporating Diana in it.

My husband claims my late dad told him the real reason of why some family still call me M. He refuses to tell me now.

  32. No-Grapefruit-1035 Avatar

I was named Ashley after Eileen Davidson’s character Ashley Abbott on The Bold and the Beautiful. My mom grew up watching soap operas and my dad thought Eileen was a lovely lady, so they chose her (fictional) name for me.

  33. PsychologicalBoat289 Avatar

My dad was a Pole Vaulter in college and met my mom in German class. In that German class they had to pick ‘German’ names, so he went with Walter because it’s pronounced kinda like Vaulter…. so they named me that haha

  34. OtherTimes0340 Avatar

I am named after a comic strip character and the Tupperware lady.

  35. diajean112 Avatar

My aunt, my mothers sister, had four boys. My parents asked her what she would of named a girl and that is how I got named “Claudia”

  36. ndnguy89 Avatar

My mom just always liked the name. She spelled it differently to be unique but it a hassle growing up and constantly telling people how it’s spelt. My mom doesn’t regret it and neither do I.

  37. Diam0ndTalbot Avatar

Bible name but also a relative’s name

  38. StripperGirlDelilah Avatar

I was named after Demi Moore’s character in “The Butcher’s Wife”

  39. CNRavenclaw Avatar

They saw/heard it on TV and agreed on it as a compromise (my dad wanted something traditionally feminine while my mom wanted something traditionally gender neutral; the name they heard/saw on TV was a “feminine” spelling of a traditionally gender neutral name)

  40. Lazy-Age6054 Avatar

Katharine Hepburn but my mom was drugged up when she filled out the paperwork and she misspelled it.

  41. jane-bukowski Avatar

my name was a spur of the moment decision because I was supposed to be Robert Allen for my grandpa’s…..but then I was born a girl. so they picked traditional-but-not-“popular” girl names (as in I was always the only girl in my class with my name).

  42. thesevenleafclover Avatar

I was told I’m named after my dad’s grandmother.

But the amount of times my dad watched and referenced west side story growing up, I’m pretty sure there’s another reason.

  43. Marialovebug Avatar

It was my Grandmother’s name, I was first kid given birth to in the family after she died. So they gave me her name

  44. APZ-MoneyBerry4131 Avatar

Im named after my moms highschool crush 😂. She was close to him but never dated. She wanted him to be my dad but I guess something happened. I find it funny but she told me I was going to be named Adrian because her name is Adriana. Lowkey would’ve liked that name too 🤷🏽‍♂️.

  45. 403sexpanther Avatar

My name’s Bailey. My parents wanted an Irish name and I guess they looked over at the bottle of Bailey’s and figured it was a good fit.
My middle name’s Michael after my mom’s friend from college who killed himself. He wrote her a note that the police confiscated and she was never allowed to read

  46. Over-Cranberry-4637 Avatar

Mine and my sisters all have Irish Gaelic names

  47. Blue_wine_sloth Avatar

My mum liked 3 names for a girl. My dad only liked one of her choices, so I got that.

My middle name is Mary, after the Virgin Mary who my mum prayed to for a child, no joke.

  48. AccomplishedAd7992 Avatar

i have half siblings and their names begin with I, so my aunt wanted to be creative and also have me start with that

  49. AkKik-Maujaq Avatar

My middle name is in honour of a cousin that would have been 2 years older than me. She was my aunts first child after trying for years (aunt was 37 years old when she had the baby, she was 29 when she’d started actively trying to get pregnant) and the baby passed away in the hospital at less than a week old (heart complications is what I was told)

  50. detainthisDI Avatar

It means “lucky”. Well, I was born disabled, so there’s that.

As for the origin, they wanted a classy name that wasn’t too common, and they both had different relatives with the common variant of my name. So they decided on that.

  51. blackberry-slushie Avatar

It’s the French word for beautiful, my dad’s side of the family is French so it’s a bit of a nod to them, while my moms side always associated it with the Disney Princess

  52. More-Turnip1776 Avatar

Mom’s college typing class all put names in a hat to guess my name, and the typing instructor’s choice actually made Mom change her mind, and now that’s my name! She just liked it. And I’m good at typing.

  53. dontucallhimbaby Avatar

My mom named me after a character in her favourite book 🙂

  54. creepyging923 Avatar

My name means trashy. As in I was named after my mom’s favorite soap opera character of the mid-80s. My middle name is a shortened girl version of my dad’s first name.

  55. FreshChicken4622 Avatar

My mom prayed for a baby girl after her previous stillbirth who was a girl, i was indeed born a girl and my dad chose a name from our holy book that translates the relief I brought to my mom in that moment i was born healthy.

  56. Lightningbeauty Avatar

I was supposed to be Victoria. My grandma on my dad’s side had recently traveled to France and heard the name Amy and she loved it. She talked both my parents into it. I’ve never felt like an Amy. I always felt like I would’ve been a great Victoria. Oh well….

  57. throwcharles12 Avatar

I was named after a Beatles song.

  60. Kaalveythur Avatar

As I have three names, I’ll only give one:

Odd (alt. Oddr), an old Norse name meaning the sharp end of an arrow, or the edge of a blade.

  61. singleguy79 Avatar

Wanted to name me after my grandfather but with a different middle name.

  62. gesunheit Avatar

I was horrified to connect the dots one day and realize my middle name was a reference to where I was conceived.

My middle name is pretty unique, let’s say spelled something like “Tiela”. One day my dad was booking hotels for a vacation and the hotel’s name was something like “Anatiela”, I said hey that’s weird, that’s just like my name – and his only reply was a very long, uncomfortable silence.

  63. DarkIllusionsMasks Avatar

My name was really popular in the mid 70s. And then it became synonymous with a masked mass murderer. So there’s that.

  64. FkUp_Panic_Repeat Avatar

Middle name is the feminine version of my Dad’s name. First name, my Mom just thought it was pretty. I have a bunch of nicknames though. Hardly anyone calls me by my full first name.

  65. Wonderful-Rock-9077 Avatar

Named after an uncle because he and his wife were unable to have children to carry on his name.

  66. Prime_LowKey Avatar

My mom named me after a character on a soap opera that she liked.

  67. TinyCatLady1978 Avatar

The story I was told was I was originally named Christy Lee but my father hated it so when my mother was asleep but still in the hospital he changed it to Christina.
I cannot confirm this story but I do have my mothers first name as my middle name so I have my doubts as they divorced 6 years later.

  68. PandaVike Avatar

When they found out what my Korean name was, they thought it sounded very similar to the name I have now. My middle name is one of their options they thought of before learning my Korean name

  69. batinahat00 Avatar

Stephanie means crown. My mum wanted Ashley but my dad is dyslexic and told the nurse to write Stephanie. My Mum was poorly when she had me so didn’t even know until a few days later I’d been given a random name that they’d never even discussed 😂 its alright I don’t mind it. My Dad even pronounces it “Stefnee”.

  70. Littleleicesterfoxy Avatar

My mum really liked The Beatles.

  71. beannuggett Avatar

My name was 1993 most popular baby girls name because they didn’t think about it.

  72. NotifyAnyway Avatar

I was named after indira ghandi but my mom’s name starts with a Y so that’s where my name came from. Yndira.

  73. AwesomeJohn01 Avatar

It’s a family name, named after my grandfather and a bunch of previous Johns

  74. Retiree-2023 Avatar

Dad left the hospital thinking I was going to be named Geraldine. Came back the next day and found out mom had changed her mind, decided on something else. She says she’s not sure where she heard it, but liked it so that’s how my name came to be.

  75. WriterKatze Avatar

So my name is Sophie. Which means wisdom.

My brother whom I will not expose here had a name that means “brown”

My father’s favourite cigarette is called “Brown Sophiane” often nicknamed “Brown Sophie” so like… I am not saying he named us after the cigarette… But his university friends were joking about it for ages.

  76. Glindanorth Avatar

Both of my grandfathers had the same first name. My parents wanted to name me after them. My mom wanted Charlotte. My dad wanted Charlene. Neither of those is my name because my parents couldn’t agree, so my name is a third option compromise.

  77. martinisawe Avatar

I was originally going to be called “Joseph” but my dad wanted me to be called after him and put “Martin” instead

  78. Dachshund_05 Avatar

My brother named me after a mean girl in a show he watched…

  79. activedisinterest Avatar

We were all given a variation of family names. Unfortunately, I got my gr-grandad’s name. The only girl….

Has NOT been easy with a male name.

  80. goldandjade Avatar

It was the name of a famous person’s daughter, they heard it on TV, and they liked it. Apparently a bunch of other people in the 90s felt the same way.

  81. theythemthen Avatar

My name is a single letter. Seriously. It’s r.

    Here is its origin:

The letter “R” is believed to originate from an ancient Semitic writing system, potentially from a hieroglyph representing a human head. In Semitic languages, the letter was called “resh,” meaning “head”. The letter evolved into the Greek “rho” (Ρ), which was then adapted by the Etruscans and later became the Latin “R”.

  82. Purple_Joke_1118 Avatar

Margaret and its variations mean “pearl” in Ireland and Scotland. Marguerite and Margarita mean “daisy” in the romance languages

  83. Bento_Fox Avatar

My first name comes from a character in a book that my mom and one of her sisters both read when they were young. They both loved the name and wanted it for a future daughter. They decided to make it fair whoever had a girl first could have dibs on the name. I am two years older than my cousin. My middle name comes from my grandmothers because both my maternal and paternal grandmothers coincidentally had the same first name. My parents knew what I would be called long before I existed.

  84. Mapex_Orion Avatar

Mine means “Son of the Right Hand”…..go figure 🙄

  85. MysticMagic2540 Avatar

They wanted my initials to spell out a nickname and just chose names they liked

  86. Wraithei Avatar

I was fortunate enough to get the surname Wraith
Honestly it’s a great fucking name when you’re a fantasy nerd.
For those who aren’t it means ghost or poltergeist & I believe as a surname originates from scottish / gaelic

  87. waspenterprises Avatar

It was my mom’s favorite name from the Bible.

  88. extraextraextr Avatar

I actually go by my middle name and always have, to the point where it’s weird being called by my first name. Said first name is the name of my dad, who was an abusive drug addict and left my mom, sister, and me hanging after stalking and harassing my mom.

It’s not like I loathe my first name or want to change it or anything. I just hate where it came from, so I gladly use my middle name by default and will gladly do so until the day I die.

  89. pokey1984 Avatar

The day my mother chose my name, my elder sister came home from school crying because the kids kept calling her “Heather Feather.” My name is the first girl’s name my mom could think of that didn’t rhyme easily.

It also happens to be the name of a distant grandmother, but my mother did not know that at the time.

  90. badcgi Avatar

Like in many cultures, it is traditional to name your kids after one of their grandparents.

In my family, I have 5 cousins named after one grandfather, and 4 named after the other.

Supposedly before I was born my grandfather’s got into a fight over which one I was supposed to be named after, and it got heated to the point that my parents decided that they were going to pick a name that no one in the family had, out of spite.

  91. Fabulous-Dish-9549 Avatar

    Strength of God.
    I’m told tequila was involved.
My middle name means in oath, but coincides with my sperm donors’ desire to name me after a 12 gauge.
    🤷🏼‍♂️ He is a nut

  92. guyinoz99 Avatar

My parents really didn’t want me, so they never chose a name.
When I was born, the doctor asked what they were going to call me.
They asked his name, and that was it.
Thank gawd his name wasn’t Sue.
    (I am male)

  93. liax-31 Avatar

my name is an anagram of my mom’s name 🙂 it’s kinda cool but my dad constantly calls me by my mom’s name 😭

  94. kingseraph0 Avatar

My name means a friendly companion, or loving friend. I think it suits me 🥰

  95. NICEnEVILmike Avatar

I was told that I was named after an uncle on my mom’s side, and my dad’s first name is my middle name.

  96. endlessdayze Avatar

Named after my Grandfather. I had an uncle, have a first cousin and a nephew all with that first name

  97. OneBiscuitHound Avatar

My mother wanted to name me Misty Leigh, and my oldest brother (14 at the time) told her it sounded like a stripper. He suggested Jennifer, after a soap opera character. That is the first and last nice thing he ever did for me. My middle name is a family sir name.

  98. EpsilonProtocol Avatar

Named after one of my mom’s relatives who died in a motorcycle crash.

  99. Purpose_Seeker2020 Avatar

“You were supposed to be a boy. So we had to think fast.”

A variation of my boys name and a parent’s name. Subsequently very few people on Facebook have the same name.

My name is never ever ever found on keychains in a truck stop or tourist place and I’m almost always asked to spell it more than once and this spelled incorrectly and mispronounced 9/10 times.

  100. Honest_Ebb_3418 Avatar

My name (Freya) comes from the Norse Mythology and Religion. I’m named after the goddess Freyja.

My parents told me that Freyja was the goddess of Beauty and Love. Turns out she’s also the goddess of War and Sex!

  101. One-Memory-8305 Avatar

My name is not the one my mother wanted. Dad did the paperwork and chose two I really dislike.

  102. imunclebubba Avatar

I have the same name as my father and my grandfather, so I was supposed to be Blankity Blank Blank the Third. Mother and sisters made a joke before I was born stating that they were going to call me “The Turd” for short. Father overheard this and said “No he is the First, because he is my first son”. Well, my dad isn’t the type of guy that you argue with generally. So I became Blankity Blank Blank the First.

  103. Law-raa Avatar

I was named after Laura Ingalls from Little House on the Prarie.

  104. B00B00-Baker Avatar

I was named after my Grandmother

  105. Purple_Appearance15 Avatar

My name came from the power rangers… apparently my mom was a fan

  106. ArinPoe Avatar

I was born in the 80s, and ultrasounds weren’t as reliable then as they are now.

They weren’t quite sure if I was going to be a boy or a girl, but my dad really wanted to name me after his grandpa on his mom’s side.

My real name is super unique, so I’m going to use fake names for examples. Great grandpa was James Alan, so my dad decided to come up with a “girl” version of the name, just in case. He decided on Jamie-Elaine. My real first name is much less cumbersome, but this was the first example I could think of, lol.

I was born a girl, so Jamie-Elaine it was.

  107. Infamous_Cranberry66 Avatar

Named after a singer my dad admired.

  108. Key_Tiger1848 Avatar

My dad’s best friend died in a drink driving accident where he smashed into a car with a family killing everyone in the other car and himself. I got the female version of his name.

I go by a nickname as my name is so awful.

  109. Lazerith22 Avatar

So my dad wanted to name me after himself. Like his dad and his before. I would have been <my name> the fifth or something.

My mother hated the idea and had a different name picked out based on her grandfather.

Well it was a rough delivery, she was loopy on drugs so my dad put the name he wanted on the birth certificate.

So anyway, I go by my middle name and they somehow lasted until I was three.

  110. Public-Philosophy580 Avatar

    Kevin. Handsome beloveded birth.

  111. Pettsareme Avatar

I was named after my maternal great-grandmother- first and middle, then 2nd middle was my paternal grandmother’s maiden name.

  112. SuicidePeaches Avatar

I used to hate my name, until I found out what it could’ve been. My mum wanted to name me Ethel, but my dad put his foot down and said NO. This was the 80s by the way not the 50s. I immediately told my dad thank you for saving me from a worse name.

  113. trulybland Avatar

My name is Regan, and from the time I was 5 years old my mother told me that she got it from an episode of Bonanza. I recently googled and found that episode and excitedly ran to show it to my mother. She looked me square in the face and said that’s not where I got your name. I got your name from a late night TV show. I said then why was I able to find an episode of Bonanza with my name? Gaslight much??

  114. big_sweaty_ross Avatar

My dad wanted to give me his name but my mum didn’t like it because she said it was too old fashioned, which I agree with because my dad is probably one of the youngest people I’ve met with his name. Eventually they settled on giving me a name that’s similar to my dad’s but more modern and now a lot of younger people are being born and given the same name I have.

  115. funkymugs Avatar

I am named for two female relatives (moms side) who ran a boardinghouse together in the 30s.

One of them had been abandoned on a family outing by her husband. He just up and left her and the kids. She later found out he had another family.

So her and the other (cousin? sister? Idk, it’s fuzzy) decided they didn’t actually need men and used the marital house to build a business. Their names are my first and middle.

I come from a long line of really intense women, including my mother. I think she wanted me to remember that. I’m doing my best.

  116. sowdirect Avatar

Well, I was supposed to be named from a movie/book from The Grapes of Wrath. In one scene Sharon is called a different name and my mom always wanted to name me that. Well my dad made a gross joke about the name and so she changed it. He is a damn idiot. She never got to name her daughter what she wanted because he was a damn fool.

  117. FrankieTheDustmite Avatar

Parents were both so dead set on having a boy that they settled on a name without bothering to consider girls or neutral names before even finding out the gender. When they learned they were having a girl, they just went with a first name they thought sounded similar enough, used my oldest aunt’s middle name for mine, said “happy birthday,” and called it a day. I’m the only one in my family (extended included) who doesn’t have a name that fits our ethnicity.

  118. RoyalTomatillo1697 Avatar

I named my child after a TEN FOOT TAN COLURED WHIP- that had a name(like people name swords etc)but I am not telling you it

  119. Occasionally_Sober1 Avatar

My mom used to teach at a dancing school and there was a cute kid there with the name I now have.

  120. Disaster_possum15 Avatar

It was my great grandmothers name, she was the daughter of a slave, raised five successful children, send her daughters to school, and was the wife of the first successful black dairy farmer in North Carolina.

  121. TimelyPatience8165 Avatar

I have my dads first name and both grandads names as middle names. Very imaginative parents I have.

  122. thezombiejedi Avatar

Named after my uncle and aunt that passed at birth. Pretty boring and standard lol

  123. strangebrainworms Avatar

My name means “masculine.” My mom thinks (and thus always told me) that it means “feminine” because it’s the feminized form of a masculine name. But.. that is not how words work, the feminization does not change the meaning lol

  124. theawells1 Avatar

My father was a shoe salesman and wanted to name me redwing after the boot brand. My mother luckily wouldn’t let him. I am named Justin after Justin boots instead.

  125. Batehripi Avatar

My mom read a book about a queen and decided if she ever had a girl, it would be that name.

  126. Fluffy_Opportunity71 Avatar

I have lastname that a lot of people have so they wanted a ‘special’ nontraditional name for me. Its not a weird name ore anything, but it just isnt around a lot in my country

  127. lmjustapigeon Avatar

    My grandma liked Beau Bridges.

    I’m a Jr.

  128. princessawesomepants Avatar

I was named after my grandfathers’ mothers. My grandmothers’ mothers had really old fashioned names, so thankfully my parents picked the good ones.

  129. Fionnghal Avatar

They didn’t know anyone with my name. That’s it.

My sister shares a name with my mom’s cousin, though not named after her.

Neither my first or middle name hold any significance to my parents.

My sisters? So much meaning throughout their first and middles.

I’m the middle kid, so no excuses.

Maybe my dad met a stripper he liked. Because I was born in the 80s and my name is sherri.

My father picked it because he liked it. No deep meaning.

My Mom named me after a character in a movie. It’s been a very rare occasion that I’ve met someone who knows someone that has the same name. Only once have I met another person with the same name as mine.
It’s the Gaelic word for crow.

I think I’m the 5th generation of my name, but the only girl. At one time, there were 4 of us alive with the same first and last name

My parents were watching “Dr. Who,” and the doctors companion was named Tegan. My Dad said, “Oh! That’s a pretty name. Let’s name her Tegan!”
Mum: “we are NOT giving her a science fiction made-up name from a TV show. Are you mad?”
Dad goes to the library, gets a few baby name books, and finds the name Tegan. Declares it is not a made-up name. I am then named Tegan.

My sister & I are named after characters in the Bible. My middle name is Dad’s sister’s first name as well as 2 other older cousins w/ the same middle name as our aunt
The only time I’ve ever heard my first name in a TV show is “Castle”

My dad wanted to name me Jebediah, but he left the room when my mother was filling out the paperwork, and my mother was still high on painkillers and couldn’t remember what he’d said, so I got a name that kind of sounds like Jebediah.

Mom hadn’t made up her mind when she went into labor. Her labor nurse happened to be her friend, and the nurse talked a doctor into giving my mom one of the first epidurals at that hospital. Mom realized she liked the nurse’s name, so she gave me the same name. I joke that I was named after the woman who gave my mom drugs.

Chanler, from the movie Prince of Tides my mom loved the name and thought removing the d from Chandler made it more feminine. But the actual meaning of my name is candle maker.

  148. TheWhiteCrowParade Avatar

Yeah, if I say the full story AITA is going to come after me. Let’s say my mom combined what my dad and grandmother picked out. Then I changed it. The current name is after my favorite book of the Bible.

  149. msdesigngeek Avatar

I am named after my maternal great grandmothers. My first name is my grandpa’s mom’s maiden name and my middle name is my grandma’s mom’s maiden name, but with the spelling feminized.

  150. ElGatoTheManCat Avatar

The origin of my name is that it’s the same name of a really pretty flower! Turns out, one of my favorites! When I told my parents my name they actually didn’t talk to me for about a month (after talking almost every day). 🏳️‍⚧️

I’m named after my mom’s favorite dog.

I was manned after my father who died before I was born. He was named after a WW2 fighter pilot that made the news. We’ve no idea who that guy was however.

My dad named me after his dad who died in the Holocaust.

My dad was the only survivor from his family.

Angelina was my birth name which means “angel or messenger of god”, my grandmother choose it because she said (at least my mom says) I looked like an angel when I was born.

I never really liked the name and have changed it to Astra, which is of both Latin and Greek origins to mean “Star” or “From the Stars”, chosen because I have always loved the stars and space.

  156. xxdazer33xx1 Avatar

My name comes from my birth month (January [Jan]) and my mom’s childhood crush on TV (Brylle) so my name’s Jan Brylle. My brother’s name also comes from his birth month and date (August 3-4 – my mom started giving birth to him on August 3 11pm or something like that then by the time he came out it’s already August 4) AND his second name comes from the name of the hospital where he was born and the day so his name is Agustre Jamesun. Lastly, my sister’s name origin is just my mom and dads name combined (florenCIA & gabRIEL) so her name is Ciariel.

So yeah our name’s kinda unique.

They just liked the name “Emily.”

They did say that if I had been a boy, my name would have been Eric Charles…Charles being my mom’s dad and Eric?  Just because?

An Irish name that means battle maiden bc I was born on St.Patrick’s Day.

  161. kirradoodle Avatar

I was a premature birth in a small-town hospital, and apparently it wasn’t looking good. The doctor who delivered me sat with me in the ICU for days till I got better – I probably wouldn’t be here without her hard work. My folks named me after her.

I’ve got a fun story. When my mum was pregnant with me, she found out that my dad wasn’t keeping himself to himself, as they say. So rather than me having a long family name like my brothers, she named me after an ex boyfriend ” the man I should have married” she said so that I would be a living reminder to Dad of his infidelity. I remember when I was 50 years old, in a whiskey fuelled rant, she started on the same story again. So I said ,gee after 50 years can’t you put that away, maybe forgive and forget? “Never” she said., She was a tough old bird But they remained together for over 60 years. I buried them back in 90’s so they won’t mind me opening the family closet. I actually met the guy I was named after when I was in my twenties. He had become a successful surgeon and head of a major hospital in the UK.

  163. not_John_36 Avatar

It was from a tv show, but they can’t remember which one.

  164. lukedap Avatar

When my mum got pregnant, she picked a girl’s name and my dad picked a boy’s name. Then they told each other what the name was and both of them: come from Latin, mean light and have five words. It was meant to be, I guess.

  165. Scary-Baby15 Avatar

My dad originally wanted to name me the same name as the only girlfriend he had besides my mom. This was a nine month argument, which ended when my dad’s coworker pitched a name two weeks before I was born.

  166. UrdnotZigrin Avatar

My Dad wanted to give me a name that would’ve sounded like some shitty 19th century music composer but thankfully, my Mom said no and took my name after my Dad’s and my maternal grandfather’s middle names

  167. SociallyAwkward423 Avatar

It was my great grandma’s name. My mom suggested my dad’s grandma’s name but she was “Olivia Florence” and went by “Flo” and he went “…you wanna call her Flo?”

I’m pretty sure my parents hoped I’d be a stripper so they wouldn’t have to pay for college.

Actually, it was one of the most popular names in the early 80s, they just spelled it differently.

  169. Comfortable-Leg-703 Avatar

It was a Jewish grandmothers name and my middle name was another grandmothers name. I used to hate it but I love it now, and it works together as well

  170. Unusual-Ear5013 Avatar

Years after the events, it turns out that I can attribute my somewhat unusual name to my one of my dad’s ex girlfriends. – Apparently my poor mum had no idea at the time. We both tease my dad about it.

Mums choice for my name was either “Sasha” (which is lovely and I could def live with) or … “Nastinka” (for which I thank the gods eternal for not being my name). Mum evidently has a crush on Doctor Zhivago and all things Russian back in the day and “Nastinka” was her take on “Natasha” or something.

My poor brother developed neonatal jaundice so my parents became temporarily very religious and gave him a lovely double barrelled religious name.
