What is the right way to deal with rude customers as a cashier?

r/

I can get really angry or upset by some customers which is stupid because I know they should not have this much impact on me. I clock out and might never see them again and then it still lingers in my head. Some people are really mean or say the most awful things. [Worst thing someone said was wishing fully spread out cancer upon me cause her discount code was not working]

When I was still working at the till, I was overly friendly and polite in such situations. That usually irritated such people so much that they didn’t continue with their anger.

I’m not a cashier any more but I am working in a job where people get angry at me quite frequently. What helps is they don’t know me.

They might try and be hurtful or aggressive but ultimately they have no idea who I am and I don’t really care what a stranger thinks of another stranger, I’ve got a job to do and they’re only ruining their own day by letting something so small send them off like that. They want you to be upset because they need to feel better about themselves and somehow think it will get them their own way.

I’m someone telling them no and a lot of people are basically giant toddlers who can’t stand not getting their own way, I wouldn’t stand for that behaviour from a small child and neither would they- they’re being ridiculous. They wouldn’t give their kid the chocolate bar for throwing a massive tantrum. They’re fuming but it’s at a situation (usually one they’ve created or hyped themselves up about) but ultimately they’re raging at my costume (my position, the uniform) but not the person inside it. They’re trying to make it personal but it can’t be if there’s no personal connection. If they do know me and are angry enough to say these things then that’s a different story but they never do.

Also, focus more on the nice ones and have a bit of a moan about the bad ones with someone else who gets it.

The correct answer is “According to company policy.”

There are efficient ways to defuse people like that, but pretty much all of them will get you reprimanded and/or fired for making the company not look like a doormat.

I just laugh them off like a moody toddler

First of all it’s important to always remember that they aren’t angry about you personally.
Either they have a bad day or have anger issues or they just want to vent. The best way to deal with this is with extreme friendliness.

    Learn to find them funny.

Imagine being full grown yet lacking the maturity to be respectful to innocent customer service people.
