What is the thing you did that changed your life?

r/

I want to know the simple thing you started doing that changed your life significantly for the better.

I’m talking about something that improved your mental health, and so it made doing your daily tasks much easier.

This is going to sound so dumb- but I used to have horrible phone anxiety- and one day I just woke up like “it’s just another person on the other end- they don’t wanna be on the phone either”, and it was gone lol. And now my life is a lot easier and I can complete tasks and make appointments without any issue. It’s saved me a lot of time.

I broke up with my (soon to be ex) husband. It was so liberating!

Hate to admit it but working out IS all that when it comes to mental health and spirit. Always resisted it but had a spine injury a year ago and had to change my habits and strengthen my body. It’s been 4 months and already doing wonders, so much more focus and confidence, I stand taller, my brain gets more oxygen, the endorphins are great. 10/10 Highly recommend.

Got off all social media except Reddit. I think the anonymous nature of Reddit makes it different than IG/TT/FB. Those are about sharing yourself and your life. Reddit is more about sharing ideas and asking questions.

I began having little escapes everyday like tiny portals of peace in my day. A walk. A playlist. Lying down with nothing on my mind, a dip in the hot tub. Those moments were my secret doors out of chaos, and every time I came back through, I felt a bit stronger, a bit lighter, a bit more like myself.

Switch from working out in the evening to working out in the morning before work. Traffic was better, I’m able to do all my work outs without waiting. I can now have sauna time after to relax before work and my mental health has improved for the better because I’m no longer stressed and overstimulated being around so much crowds.

I started meditating and practising yoga at age 15. Permanently altered the course of my life, for the better.

Working out in the morning and traveling.

    • cortisol (stress hormone) is highest when you wake up in the morning, especially for women. So working out in the morning immediately boosts my mood and makes my body feel good. Then I get happy too because I’ve met my workout/move goal for the day and I don’t feel defeated or beat myself up for not working out.

    • saving up most of money to travel twice a year. This world is crazy and working 8-5 every single day really drains me. By making sure I travel, it gives me something to look forward to by planning and getting excited, and then escape when we go somewhere.

Focused on sleep – Putting other things aside to ensure I get a good night’s sleep every night. I let myself stay up late one night per week but otherwise stick to a sleep routine. It’s a game changer and I’ve found it makes my exercise better.

(slowly) removing ‘should’ from my vocabulary. As in, I’m trying to stop thinking ‘I should go apply for jobs’ ‘I should do the laundry’ ‘I should go to the gym’ because it was only making me live more and more in guilt. So now I ask myself do I want to? Yes. Then we do it. The answer can also be a not right now, or no, and that itself can help with the guilt.

Telling myself the truth. Getting really raw and honest about how the fact that I cannot make anyone except myself DO anything and that by focusing on what others are or aren’t doing instead of what I myself am or am not doing, I was giving away my power. When I quit distracting myself with the actions of others and looked inward, I began to see the multitude of ways I gaslight myself, get in my own way, excuse myself and coddle myself. Moving through that has changed everything about my life. Everything. From wealth to parenthood to marriage to how I love myself.

started Muay Thai. That was in my late 30s and it totally changed my life. I’m still training 11yrs later and still fucking badass.

Got off hormonal birth control. Realized I’ve spent ages 13-28 with a haze over my thoughts and emotions. It’s like I just put glasses on for the first time. Never looking back.

Started actually reading the Bible and getting to know who God is instead of listening to people who think they know and are completely wrong (Christians and non Christians)

It’s not one thing. It’s three things.

I had a rough year. The worst in my life. Pain, loss, self-destructive behaviour. Started therapy, meds, etc.

I changed a few things. Was able to get off the meds. Felt fantastic.

I turned to my friend one day, and said “I was never mentally ill, I just needed exercise, vegetables and sex.”
