Asking because I (20m) am a blue collar worker, I get paid hourly and do physical work, I’m just not working in a trade.
Someone in a dating app explained that I’m not “rugged” enough to be a blue collar worker…but I literally am one, is it just a different image associated with it?
I’m just curious because like, 1/3 dating profiles I come across in a 20 mile radius is always mentioning something about blue color men.
I’m fine with myself, I’m just curious as to where it comes from.

Some people are just dumb and don’t know what words mean.
I’m Belgian, so I don’t understand what “blue collar worker” means. Is it a word for a worker?
Girls love when I tell them I’m blue collar and then get mad at me when I’m gone for 15-20 days a month cause I’m working lol
You can never win lol . Girls love the idea of a guy that works in the trades but most of them don’t love the lifestyle
I think it’s young people being drawn back towards the aesthetics of traditional masculinity now that other elements of culture have shifted away from it to some degree.
It’s more about image than the actual reality of it.
Probably dudes running the profiles to troll other dudes. I’d get off the apps and just go outside and live a life, that’s how you meet women.
tons of skinny little blue collar workers
They’ve spent their whole life typing on phones with their thumbs so they think you have to be built like a lumberjack if you’re doing physical labor.
Which you obviously don’t. They could do it too. They just don’t want to and have convinced themselves they couldn’t.
Please tell me where I have to go, where is this oasis of blue collar desire?
They’re maybe saying they don’t want an internet dwelling know it all like myself and instead someone more down to earth who can just sit with the dog watching football
Ya know I tend to date nerdy girls myself so who am I to judge if a girl wants a guy who struggles to use even type.
Sounds like you live in an area where that seems to be a common preference, somewhere rural or conservative?
Outside of people in those areas tending to respect blue collar over careers, I think there’s a certain “dad bod” look mant blue collar workers have that women tend to find attractive. Typically hairy rough looking men who looks like he can protect a family and will put in work to provide for them is some people’s type I guess. Especially given how culture has shifted in recent years, some folks look at blue collar workers as if they are a rarity or are going against the grain.
I can tell you that the white collar world is always obsessed with the blue collar world. Self sufficiency and jobs with easily identifiable useful skills are interesting.
It’s always “man that would rule to know how to do if the pay were better.”
Maybe you’re matching with some of them?
The Carhartt ad campaign that convinced you all to wear beanies and overalls.
The blue collar = rugged thing may have worked in the 80’s and maybe 90’s, but not today. These days, the majority of blue collar workers where I’m from (Toronto area, Canada) are immigrants from places like the Caribbean, Phillipines, south Asia, etc. For the most part, they are not big or rugged guys.
In Toronto itself, unless you’re a surgeon or work in the financial sector, you’re a loser on the dating scene.
Girls picture “blue collar” guys as older, bearded, big guys that are greying or balding. Probably like their dad, or their friend’s dads. Think of it this way, when you picture a hot dog eating champion, do you picture a big guy or a little asian guy?
I’m blue collar and work 12 hour days for 14 days then 7 off. I really enjoy it
It’s not just your generation. I’m over a decade older than you and girls then liked the same. And the same goes a decade before me.
Young girls are attracted to older rugged type masculine men because the teenage boys they’re surrounded by in the dating pool are anything but. Blue collar romantically implies age, work ethic, care, toughness, ruggedness, maturity, stability, etc. Again, none of these things are really often found in teenage or young college age boys.
Idk what that person is on about being rugged, but a lot of trades have unions and in my neck of the woods they make the type of money to be the bread winner in their house.
Well “Uptown Girl” hasn’t had a resurgence so you got me.
As an older millennial, I can tell you that it is a reaction to the previous trend of men moving away from blue collar work in my generation. In the 80’s and 90’s we increased opportunities in education and white collar work, the education system told everyone to attempt a 4 year degree in a nice white collar field. The generation over did it and racked up a national emergencies worth of college debt and overcrowded the white collar labor market. Women especially raked up debt getting degrees that do not market well for a decent stable salary. Due to all that, the trend is now reversed, and it is seen as noble and stable to work in the blue collar sector. Especially in our new world of constant economic swings.
Im wanted by people I don’t know?! Where do I find them?
Is this real? I would doubt it. I’m thinking this is the OP’s myopia coming in to play.
People think I’m not blue collar because I wear nice shoes and button ups when going out lol. I guess it’s just a look.
Idk dude, I’m white collar as hell. I used to spin wrenches but traded in for stability.
I guess they like the idea on paper but when put in practice it’s not so great?
