I’ve always liked video games but never really been in a position to enjoy them whether it was not able to afford them, not enough time with family or job, or similar commitments.
Well. Now I have the time and, frankly I Need a distraction so I Thought a gaming system would be nice to have. Is there one with a planned updated release I should wait for?
I like simple platform games. I do not really even know what to reference. Mario. Brothers type games. I played a game called Ori and the Blind Forest with a nephew once and it was right up my alley. I also remember liking Sim City and Mortal Kombat.
THanks!

Xbox Series S with Gamepass.
I don’t know if it’s better than a PS5, I don’t care really, I just bought it because it fit in the TV unit.
I’m not a big gamer, just play to unwind every now and again.
PS5 is my favorite but if you prefer Mario bros type games then you seem like a Nintendo switch type of person
What other games do you like or types of? They definitely have mortal kombat on PlayStation though
SNES
Just the right amount of nostalgia, variety and technology.
I hate the fact that I sold my collection.
Nintendo Switch 2.
No brainer.
been streaming Xbox gamepass to my steam deck
Pc over anything else. If you’re into Mario however, you don’t really have a choice.
PC. I mean I have a beefy PC since I use it for research using physics software since my background is in fluid physics (have a high end GPU and CPU and a boat load of RAM). If you aren’t into PCs or don’t have a need for anything above medium powered one (like if you just use your PC for internet stuff and streaming) then I’d recommend getting a console. Whatever platform you choose is going to have games at the ready for you that you’d want to play either through individual purchases or “game passes”. If you are looking to play retro games however, I would say PC has an advantage in that department (especially if looking to play games from the 90s that were in Genesis and SNES).
PC Master Race
Currently still having a good time on my xbox one. But of all time the game boy advance with the boys in school playing pokemon
For me PC is always king but if you don’t want to build a rig Steam Deck is a great option for console type games. As for the traditional consoles the two big systems (Playstation and XBox) are practically the same these days. Nintendo is behind on tech as always but has their whole Nintendo IP library so that’s where it stands out. Choose whichever one has games you want or that your friends have if you want to play with them.
Ori and the Blind Forest is a Metroidvania style game and all the consoles have an absolute fuck-ton of those. Fighting games are everywhere too. There are plenty of city builders out there like Sim City but you’ll find them mostly on PC (Steam Deck likely won’t be super compatible unless you connect a keyboard and mouse).
I’m always going to recommend a PC over a console but I know dropping a few thousand isn’t what everyone wants. Best thing you can do is look for games that are similar to those you like to play and see what platform they are on. Then choose the one with the most games you want to play.
PS5
I recently dusted off the PS2
I have both the PS5 with the plus service and the Xbox x with game pass and have no time for either. I find game pass has more volume and variety, but PS has the flagship games I want to play
Playstation 5
If you like nice, approachable, casual games, then you want the Nintendo Switch 2.
If you want more involved or more technically demanding games, but still convenience of just picking up and playing whatever whenever, then you want PS5 or Xbox X.
If you want to play sophiaticated strategy games, or play things at the absolute cutting edge of graphics and performance, then its PC.
Switch. Switch 2 as soon as next Xenoblade will be released.
I feel like the Nintendo Switch has been the best for casual gaming. It’s easy to grab a game and play it with for like 30 minutes, many games are multiplayer so great for when friends come over, etc.
I’m mostly a PC MMO gamer (World of Warcraft/Guild Wars 2) and sink a lot of time into those, and while we do have a PS5 and an Xbox it’s the Switch that gets the most attention when I’m not behind my pc. It’s just easy to play casually on it and I’ve always had a weakness for Nintendo games. I’m not the best gamer, and Nintendo games always felt easy to pick up and to play. It helps that you can play it handheld, but also docked for better graphics/a bigger screen.
NES
I prefer Xbox, I have the Series X and I love it, if you want a lot of games that probably the way to go, I did add a 1Tb extension card for it too so now I have 2 terabytes. And Forza Horizon 5 is a big plus
PC with gaming capabilities and Retroarch = infinite games to explore. Add a steam account and you would need 100 life times to complete all those games.
Honestly? My PS2 and PS3. Just so much nostalgia. If i want to play anything modern, im on the PC.
I think you’d really like a Steam Deck
You can play thousands of retro classics on emulators now days. Nintendo switch is good for the modern Nintendo stuff. NES and SNES are great for old quality platformers. Classic sega is good too for platformers, on master system and mega drive. Good old sonic the hedgehog. Alternatively, steam On PC has many modern platformers too.
Pc for efficiency and the Wii for nostalgia and parties
Steam Deck.
I have emulators for all my favorites from NES to PS2, many modern Steam games that my POS laptop can’t run, and I even learned to run romhacks and mods.
All portable. All easy to use.
Still rocking my trusty PC setup. Built it myself last year and I’m probably way too proud of it, but being able to mod games and customize everything feels amazing after years of watching other people play. Finally have time to dive into massive RPGs like Baldur’s Gate 3, and honestly? I’m not sleeping enough because I keep telling myself “just one more conversation.”
TI-89
I have always been a primarily PC gamer and still am. I don’t own a console, and although I have a phone, I don’t use it for gaming. Currently my PC runs Windows 10, but it’s getting old and I mean to build a new PC in the next few months (before Windows 10 goes obsolete) and run Linux (Debian) on it.
It makes sense for me because I need a PC anyway for all sorts of things I do (a smartphone is so slow and cumbersome to use, a big screen is nice for watching movies, etc), and rather than have a console it’s simpler to just have a decent enough PC that I can play games on it too. Also, new games are really expensive but PC as a platform has great backwards-compatibility and I get to play older, cheaper games while spending less.
I think PS3 has some fond memories for me, gaming with my friends online until the early morning, Modern Warfare 2 lobbies where you just talk shit to other people lol.
Great variety of games like Arkham Asylum, Little Big Planet, Midnight Club , ect.
I consider my PS5 to be the best purchase I’ve ever made and I’m 31 lol.
I never played sony before the PS5. Now I’ve platted many of the AAA heavy hitters like Elden Ring, Cyberpunk 2077, Death Stranding, Control, No Man’s Sky
I think PC would be cool to play almost anything, but I don’t like sitting at a desk. I prefer sitting in an office chair in front of my tv with more space in front.
The only real reason I’d need a PC though is to play Spore. Lol it’s the only PC game I ever gave a damn about. I’d probably play the shit out of some factory sims though
I guess my phone to play like freecell and sudoku
I game on a Steam Deck and it is the best system I have ever owned.
It can run the majority of the games available on Steam right out of the box. You can use it in handheld mode, or you can buy a dock for it and connect it to a TV and controller for the Console gaming experience, or you can connect a mouse, keyboard, monitor, and speakers to the dock for the PC gaming experience.
It is also an emulation beast. If you are confident following guides online you can emulate almost any game from XBox 360/PS 3 era and older.
90’s gamer here.
PC all the way. Steam and good old games have a monstrous selection of old and new games. The modding community is vast, bringing new and cool stuff to the table.
Not only that, literally everything that’s not nailed down is emulated and free. From the complete C64 library to game boy, NES, playstation, literally all arcade games, and everything else in between.
Lastly, PCs have all the peripherals. Wired, wireless, steering wheels, joysticks, Nintendo controllers, peddles, drum kits, VR, hell, someone probably builds pong controllers with a usb cable.
PC forever. The amount of freedom is necessary for me. I like to make my experience exactly how I want it. I also love VR and nothing comes close to PC VR.
