It’s easy for me to say that moderator should just do the extra work but it’s a lot of work looking for accounts that skim the edges of the rules reposting stuff exactly a year old and what not with means to dominate the front page or use the account for something worse.
I think communities should have the option to limit audiences to verified humans to help reduce these attacks. But to what extent would people be willing to accept for human verification on some random website? Most would probably prefer none.

I think it can be an inside job, with these bots it can make the sub seems more active and engaged.
The only way they could realistically be combated is by reddit themselves. They have the necessary data to determine if a post is from a bot.
If it’s still a problem, it’s their fault.
If they won’t fix it, it’s time to move elsewhere, or make a new place to congregate elsewhere.
