My wife was just contacted by a family member in regards to my wife’s Grandma missing a significant amount of money. This family member has accused my wife of being directly involved in the “conspiracy” to defraud her grandma, and felony elder abuse.
They said an investigator will contact them soon.
Any kind of investigation will absolutely clear my wife of any involvement. However due to our government jobs, we take matters of criminal or civil liability very seriously and are considering contacting a lawyer.
Do we need to reach out to an elder law, or criminal defense lawyer?

The family member could sue, could file a police report, can’t charge a felony. If this is all civil and there might be a lawsuit, then a civil litigator. If the police want to talk, she can’t clear her name by talking. Only get into trouble even if innocently.
If your wife has been or is going to be involved with Grandmas finances, having an elder law attorney involved is a good idea.
If a law enforcement agency does contact you, then you should decline to be questioned and hire a defense attorney.
